I was just skimming through wikipedia and the finnish army's archives, saving some I deemed interesting. So I thought why not dump some here, I think some of you might be interested in it?
Some might be too big to post here and some might be shitty quality but oh well.
Is anyone lurking? Here's some man ass.
Is there any interest in these? If not, I'll leave this image dump at 40.
I wonder why this isn't coming up on page 1... I'm forgetting something. Fuck it.

I am interested, just don't want to disturb. The Continuation War isn't nearly as discussed as the Winter War.
>>33441747
I wonder why...
/k/ on the left.

Well a large chunk of it was trench warfare where little happened, then a Soviet assault that pretty badly screwed the Finns until they won a series of defensive battles. Even then, the aftermath was still shitty. I do think of the what-ifs of if the Finns had better prepared for the Soviet assault, but there's little that could've allowed them to hold indefinitely. Still for what they had the Finns did pretty damn well and I respect the hell out of their efforts.

What's with the skulls on their helmets? Never seen that before.
>>33441798
I'm not completely sure. I'd do some googling but at the moment too tired for that, trying to stay up with the power of coffee and cigarettes...
>>33441849
nice dump man
>>33441859
Thanks! There are literally tens of thousands pictures in the archives: http://sa-kuva.fi/
here's a nice one I saved a while ago

Noice.
To answer your question about people being here. Most just lurk in a dump thread to not upset the order of the OP.
>>33441849
I did some googling and it seems they belonged to Kevyt Osasto 4.
When you just want to go home...

Those are soviets by the way.

Oh yeah, komsomolets!
My favorite little tankling

I fucking love old blenheim canopy
This is getting harder and harder to do since I'm so bloody tired so I'll leave you with this before I call it a day.
It's a frostbitten horse cock. Thanks for watching!

Anyone know which streets these are? It would be interesting to see these sites up close today.

this guy looks exactly like my sergeant during p-kausi
Finland is weird how the gene pool is so small and you see copies of people all the time.
>>33441798
Old freikorps helmets that got sent as aid?
>>33442323
No, they painted them themselves, supposidly to look more intimidating, effect can be argued for, but you saw the same with faces on planes

Finnfag here, there's quite little info about that stuff online. I once read in a book that these could've been some Finnish troops who were trained in the German SS unit, known as the (rought translation) "Finnish brothers in arms". Some of these skulls belong to the so called "death company", that just did crazy shit in WW2.
One other tale tells about a company that started their march from quite literal morgue, carrying people back and forth it (you know... deads from the field), and thus they wanted to use a skull symbol.

just realized that pic was already posted in much bigger version. At least it confirms they're finns.
>>33441785
also whenever someone mentions Continuation war there'll always be that one guy ranting about Fascist Finns' unjustified attack on defenseless Soviet Union & alleged active participation in the Siege of Leningrad.

the Finnish soldiers with skulls painted on their helmets had nothing to do with Freikorps or SS, one account says the skull was used by an artillery unit, though the picture of what is quite clearly an infantry unit with the symbol painted on the helmets suggests otherwise, it's possible though that it's a jäger (Finnish light infanry-) unit copying something their commanding officer saw while serving in the Prussian Army during WWI, after all skull and crossbones was used by some German units before and during WWI, most famously a Prussian cavalry unit.

It's also possible they were pirates..

What is the breast badge he is wearing?

I have a uniform
came across this, thought I'd share: a pair of Finnish/Swedish-made reverse-engineered M2 (my sources claim the exact version to be called Colt MG53-2, AFAIK they are actually called AN/M3) on an anti-aircraft mount, the decision to reverse-engineer M2 was made due to three things:
1) Finland and Sweden had acquired some American-made ones and saw a need to manufacture them on their own in case of being cut off from a steady source of replacement weapons and spare parts.
2) Due to licensing agreements between Colt and FN only FN could sell manufacturing licenses for Browning designs to European customers.
3) By the time the purchase of manufacturing licenses came into consideration Germany had steamrolled Belgium & it became impossible to buy licenses from FN.
So Sweden took some partial blueprints they had acquired from a source that remains a mystery to this day, Finns took an M2 from a Brewster Buffalo to be taken apart & with these the VKT 12,70 LKk-42 ("State's rifle factory 12.70mm aircraft machinegun model 1942") was born.

Finnfag with serious interest to military history here. Some Finnish Army units painted skull to their helmets. The best known and probably the largest from these units was Light Detachment 4 (Kevyt Osasto 4). Light Detachments were basically small battalions of light troops (mounted infantry & bicycle troops). The habit of seems to have been typical to cavalry units or units closely related to them, so presumably it was at least partly inspired by cavalry traditions.
BTW: Just to see one example of Finnish cavalry traditions including use of skull emblem check the first photo that OP posted. The badge on left breast pocket indicates that the sergeant shown in the photo had successfully graduated from Cavalry NCO School (Ratsuväen Aliupseerikoulu).

this pic really brings up feels

And you can actually see the skull in the former Rakuunaeskadroona in a coat of arms. It's hanging opposite to their old sotilaskoti.
Probably the most aesthetic picture in FDF archive.
SS graves in Kiestinki. Notice the use of Algiz rune (Life rune, Lebensrune) instead of crosses.

A crying shame. Waste of good equipment.
Also; I can't get enough of the quality of the Finnish WWII pictures. It's like every single picture is a LIFE piece. Such a treat.
I wanted to share link to Iltasanomat -Afternoon Paper- look into 100 days of war for 100 years of independence. Interviews are in Finnish of course but text can be machine translated and all stories include pictures.
