Met a kid when I was stationed in Kandahar AFB he sold candy and all kinds of bullshit he could find to some of the guys on base he ended up becoming good friends with our NCO who would give him American candy his wife sent him to sell so he could make some money to feed himself. He always sold us tootsie rolls, Laffy taffys, jolly rangers and fun size skittles bags. Our NCO use to call him fun size since it was one of the only things in English he could say, he stuck around for about 4 months before the fucking taliban used him as a suicide bomber because he could get close to American soldiers without suspicion. He ended up killing 1 MP and injuring 3 other soldiers. They found his sisters and mother shot to death in their hut the day after he killed himself. Our NCO never recovered from that we could tell it hit him hard and never ate candy spoke about it again. Can't eat candy to this day without having a flashback to the day it happened and just feeling sick. Hard to explain to other people so I just tell them I don't eat candy cause it gives me migraines. I was listening to Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcast on atomic weapons today (I'd previously listened to his Ghengis Khan series and enjoyed it, so I thought I'd give it a go).

Overall it was good but I had to stop listening about 1/3rd of the way in because he started reading accounts of the survivors of the atomic bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki - generally I'm pretty desensitised to sad stories but these ones really got to me.

One of them was by a boy who was unharmed by the initial blast and ran towards the city centre (ground zero) to see what had happened. When he got there he was met by the victims shambling around aimlessly, their skin turned black with the skin of their arms hanging from their fingertips and their faces missing. They didn't make a noise, they just walked around, not living but not yet dead.

The other one was the account of a girl who had been in her bathroom when her house had collapsed. When she got free she found her younger sister, with terrible burns down one side of her body. One of her eyes was hanging out of it's socket, but when she tried to push it in and secure it with a bandage she could not, as her ear had come off leaving no place to secure the bandage properly. Her sister was asking for water, but was unable to speak properly.

I had to stop listening there (I have a younger sister who is the world to me). When I hear accounts like that it really brings home the reality of war, and re-enforces my personal belief that the 20th century was just a series of terrible mistakes.

That podcast was free, it's about 6hrs long if anybody's interested, and as I said I recommend the series on the Mongols.
