The only reason the Russians had such a gigantic Boomer force is because they would not have stood a chance against the West conventionally after Reagon took office. The technological gap became way too big to be compensated with mass. yeah US spread false information that they had spies that told planned route of Soviet submarines when actually they monitored submarines with SOSUS. Akula class came late cold war. Of course we don't know how good submarine detection is today as it is secret.

Notice "late cold war". Cold war stopped in 1990's...and that article is from 2012. After cold war SOSUS have been mostly used to detect whales instead of submarines and it have been partly decommissioned.

I just finished reading this book about a week ago. Boomers are fine and all but the reconnaissance and surveillance stuff was incredible.

Pre walker spy ring: Popsicle's chance in hell. SOSUS line had them in check, and in general NATO had Soviet boomers crossing the GIUK gap locked in tight, especially when NATO strategy put a much heavier focus on shadowing them later in the Cold War. The Soviet's poorer sonar fit and generally piss-poor acoustic signatures made survival rates for most Soviet subs trying to cross into the North Atlantic really bad.

Post-Walker: Different ball game, as the Walker spy ring gradually blows the whole thing open. Disastrous for NATO but arguably just as sickening for the Soviets, as they slowly realize that they have had up to this point little idea how boned their subs would have been in the North Atlantic. Much improvement in Soviet sub forces ensue, which is really a massive acceleration of technological advancement the Soviets were already carrying out. NATO hunter killers begin noticing that their opponents are improving: Better passive detection and very strenuous checking maneuvers of stern arcs makes life harder. Even worse is that Soviet quietening in the newer marks of Victors and Echos begins to get very close to NATO levels, eventually resulting in some cases of NATO subs being "bounced" by Soviet ones, which is found upsetting. (Ironically though, new Soviet doctrine eased the difficulty of finding the very quiet new Echo types, as the Soviets begin attaching escort Victors to them, which turn out to be a lot noisier than the boats they were supposed to protect). They also get a lot better at bamboozling SOSUS and exploiting its weaknesses, and in general make NATO ASW assets work a lot harder for their supper.

Surprisingly, the chances of Soviets in this later period getting a boomer off US shores to blow a hot plutonium load over the Eastern seaboard and beyond don't get better, and maybe even get less likely. This is because Soviet doctrine changes. Instead of bumrushing attack boats and boomers into the Atlantic(cont)
