Feral hogs are an incredibly destructive invasive species, this kind of thing is all that can be done to keep their numbers down and even it doesn't work very well.
>>
>>33432218
In some areas hogs are considered pest animals - so plentiful they displace native animals and ruin cropland. So it isn't a matter of being sporting: they just need to be killed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

And its nice to see the effects of different ammunition on live targets. I'm going to bring a bunch of different Lehigh rounds next time I go.

Wild boars in the American south have become a pest species like rats.

There are places where farmers are hiring companies to machine-gun them from helicopters, like some kind of porcine Mujaheddin.

What areas are these, because I need to pack up and get a new job.
>>
>>33431843
Sometimes its just hard work.
I got a job 2 weeks ago clearing out a farm's infestation and managed to bait in and kill 52 of them in a day and a half. Worst part was dragging the stinky bastards out of a creek, stuck in fences and generally a fucking hell of a mess, literally dug a trench with a tractor's backhoe and they're fertiliser now. 3-4 times a year I do helicopter work (on pigs and goats mostly) and that's kind of fun.
>>
>>33432363

>is the meat this shitty?
Most of the time, yes. Full grown hogs are tough, shitty meat filled with parasites.
>can't they at least be made into dog food?
Probably, but I wouldn't waste the time potentially giving my dogs worms when you can grind up the dead and use it to bait other live ones (yes, they'll eat their own dead, ground up or otherwise).
>>
>>33432463
Years ago used to catch the piglets on my uncles farm and he'd drench them to clear out the worms + all the other parasitic crap in them, raise them up and sold as wild boar- they're still feral, bad tempered little cunts all their miserable lives though!
At least where I am they can have at least 3-4 varieties of worms, hydatids and there's a risk of other livestock diseases that can transfer over to stock. Some areas might be cleaner, but I wouldn't really want in on it unless I was starving.

if this was europe where the boar are not in a frenzy i would agree.

in some places like texas, the hogs have become so over populated they destroy entire fields of crops, kill dogs, attack people, shit up the natural order of things.

other animals are suffering greatly because of the hog epidemic.

they are an invasive species from spain.
>>

Do you have any idea how invasive and destructive they are? Heck, just watching that video should've made you understand, look at the amount of packs roaming about, there's an easy 200 more in that area since you only got to see the ones that run about in front of the truck.

All of these wacky hog hunt videos just makes me cringe at how inefficient it is. Tannerite? Running them over with a truck? Expensive/convoluted methods that don't really get much result. We need military strategists working on this.

These are just amateurs and yokels. There are guys who do this professionally who will bait whole packs into kill zones with thermal sighted MGs and kill hundreds in a night.
>>33432929
I don't want to come across as a dick, but that's just taking in the cost of ammo. What about fuel to get from sight to sight, bait, NVs because they are out at night or low light, and just plain old valuing my time? It's not very efficient.

>7,62x39
Its a good round for pigs, generally does the trick out to 100-150m and then you tend to find the guns that shoot it aren't always that great
.223 at those ranges is also quite workable and a soft or hollowpoint will wreck them pretty good- at a slight increase in cost over ball ammo. Big advantage with 223 is those quick follow up shots
.308 is a great all-rounder on pigs, but a bit pricier. Generally what I carry
12G if you can get in close like in the OP's webm is great loaded up with 00 or 000 shot, that'll slap their shit- but not the cheapest*

>*keep in mind when you're doing this professionally and dumping 2-500rds in a couple of days, that cost will add up

>>33432916
Helicopter shooting isn't for everyone, my brother in law and business shooting partner just flat out wont do it because it does require a distinct lack of self preservation :)
So, drag out the half mad, mostly broken military vet to get in the whirly bird and go screaming around mountains, paddocks, certain death in a tree or power lines. There's also a bit of multi-tasking as you have to communicate with the pilot, adjust speed and shooting something when you're doing 100-150km/h, 100ft off the ground isn't the same as doing it from the back of a truck or a nice comfy hunting lie.
There's a lot of physics going on, leading of targets, matching with your air-speed, movement of the helicopter. Basically its a whole other skillset of shooting really.
>>
>>33432218
This looks sporting as fuck. Much harder and more fun than waiting in a blind for 4 hours and then taking a shot at a still target. This shit actually takes skill and there's some risk of danger if your car breaks down and they charge you.
>>
>>33431843
>shoot hog then run it over

kek
>>
>>33432657
Feral hogs have been known to be able to reproduce as young as 3 months old, and can have litters as high as 12 per gestation cycle. There are times where they reproduce faster than rabbits.
>>
>>33433160
>There's also a bit of multi-tasking as you have to communicate with the pilot, adjust speed and shooting something when you're doing 100-150km/h, 100ft off the ground isn't the same as doing it from the back of a truck or a nice comfy hunting lie.
>There's a lot of physics going on, leading of targets, matching with your air-speed, movement of the helicopter. Basically its a whole other skillset of shooting really.
There's nothing in that description that would preclude someone without military experience is my point. Unless your job in the military was to shoot shit out of a helicopter then there is no magical juju that the military gives people that makes them qualified to shoot stuff out of helicopters.
>>
>>33432460
Just remember to not lead em as much
>>
>>33433160

>leading of targets

Not to start a shit show over semantics but I thought in helis you actually "trail" your shots as they've got the forward momentum of your vehicle.

So like you would end up aiming behind the hog as it's probably not going faster than the chopper.
>>
>>33432968
>>33432968
>I don't want to come across as a dick, but that's just taking in the cost of ammo. What about fuel to get from sight to sight, bait, NVs because they are out at night or low light, and just plain old valuing my time? It's not very efficient.
That's why you bag as many as possible. it is an economy of scale. But moreover it is a fun activity, you could probably get a few bucks out of a farmer willing to pay you for service, plus the bounty.
>>
>>33433337
Just from a training perspective though, they already know their way around firearms, cleaning, maintenance and sometimes hitting what they're aiming at and working with others.
So, someone straight of the street is less qualified in that sense.

Also the hardest part apart from not falling out, ND'ing a hole in the bottom of the aircraft, shooting a rotor, fear of heights, fear of dying in a flaming ball of metal etc- is actually hitting anything at speed.
>>
>>33433449
That's why I qualified my statement with, "some other civilian who can shoot and handle a firearm safely,"
>>
>>33433479
Not saying civilians are worse shots, but in terms of the military, they are trained to a quantifiable standard... some better than others of course!
>>
>>33432924
Look up Jaeger. Ex-military guys who studied the problem and decided that fancy remote-control traps that get the whole herd were the best way to go.

Expensive, though.

>Duster
>A list of "sporting" challenges to shout at your chosen foe
>An extremely edgy pose to strike
>>
>>33433479
Just to play devils advocate, how often do civilians have to shoot at movie targets? How often moving targets from vehicles? Not saying that every vet does, (especially since a large majority are POGs, and even being in the infantry won't guarantee those opportunities anymore) but for those that *do* have that experience it is a night and day difference. Its actually pretty funny because that exact difference is what led to those fancy smart robotic targets.

Again, nothing saying that it wouldnt be possible, but it makes sense where that's coming from. No point in pretending there's no difference.

There's no restrictions on hunting feral pigs in Commiefornia. A buddy found a farmer who'd let us hunt on his farm as long as we didn't even point guns in the general direction of any structures. We had to go on foot, so we usually only bagged somewhere between 5 and 20, the upper numbers were usually with rifles.

Handguns were the most fun, I usually shot my SA 1911, buddy had a scoped Ruger Redhawk that really did some damage.

It's pretty fun, and the landowners love you for it.

The flavor depends largely on what they have been eating. Hogs are pretty much omnivores and will eat and thrive on pretty much anything edible. That is part of the reason they are a pest species, they eat anything and everything. In say, a swampy area the hogs will be eating a lot of muck, decaying shit, shitty swamp plants, even crayfish and the like. So the flavor gets fucked up by all of that shitty stuff.
If they have been eating cleaner, say fruits and edible roots then their flavor will be much better.

Be a life long local and have lots of connections to land owners who are suffering real financial loss... so the short answer is if you have to ask you won't ever get paid for it. Further you won't even get to do it for free unless you have a friend wish land there. Your only option is to pay someone to kill pigs on their land and they charge hundreds per day because there is so much interest.

This is common using baited traps. Hogs are stupid; if you bait a trap, wait for a bunch to gather and then drop one of them, the rest will initially scatter due to the noise but the will saunter right back up to the same trap, complete with dead hog still present, in very little time. Occasionally they'll eat the dead hog, too.

>Honestly I think we should exempt hog hunting from all hunting laws
In a lot of places they are. I FL they're not considered game, can be hunted/killed at anytime without tag/bag limits/requirements, and are considered exclusively pets. Only restrictions I know of are specific seasonal schedules for hunting with dogs to flush them out, and I know they can't be transported alive.

Feral hogs are not legally defined as a game animal. We can used tanerite and bait to kill packs of them, we can poison them, we can electrocute them. We can and do what ever we want, day or night as long as we are not trespassing or zoning laws stop us. We can build a drop cage that nets 4 dozen of them at a time and burn them alive.

Not hunting as legally defined.
>>Hunting from a moving vehicle

DNR agents are the biggest cunts I have ever met in law enforcement. I have never met a sheriffs deputy or city cop who give them the time of day outside of their job requirements and they will say the same as I just did. You don't "hunt" feral hogs, you are removing an invasive species.
You can go all stalker and hone your skills if you like but when they are destroying your crops you just remove the fuckers as proficiently as you can.

Poison is a really bad way of dealing with pests as you don't really have any control over what eats it, might be someones livestock or friendly fluffy native species chewing on it. So its something I've always avoided using unless I could chuck it down a rabbit warren where its not going to be picked up by something else. Most poisons on large vertebrates tend to be hit-miss anyway, some of them can live through it and even if they do get nailed its quite a lot of suffering before they do go down, then you've got to get rid of them before natural scavengers might accidentally get a dose picking at the body.

At least with a gun, its quick, you know (or should know!) what you're pointing it at.

"Hog hunting", which is not hunting at all but eradication of an invasive species, is not an effective way of reducing pig population.

>DGIF strongly discourages recreational (sport) hunting of feral hogs, even if done so in the name of control, because it does not work to control populations and actually leads to more feral hogs. The seemingly innocent act of attempting to hunt feral hogs for eradication or control purposes unintentionally feeds the growing feral hog problem in Virginia. Feral hogs create interest in feral hog hunting. Increased overall interest in feral hog hunting in Virginia is leading to more and more new populations through human actions that introduce feral hogs to new areas.
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/feral-hogs/hunting-faq/

Rather, it is a means for violent people to take part in unethical wanton killing as seen in the video in OPs post. These "hunters" do it not for the sport, not for controlling the population, but for the joy of taking life.

Basically, if you do this you're worse than a Chinaman.

It's saying Hog culling is a self perpetuating problem because some people have been releasing hogs into the wild to fuel the hog cull craze. The more bacon that get's removed, the more that get's reintroduced by these people to keep the cash flow going. Definitely a problem considering we're trying to exterminate these things.

>>
>>33459212

Except that's retarded, seeing as how hogs were introduced 500 years ago and will have already spread wherever they were going to. What keeps hogs expanding is a lack of predators and a bunch of human-generated food. Introducing hogs somewhere is dumb because they don't stay put.

>There's no restrictions on hunting feral pigs in Commiefornia.

Nope. CA considers them a game species and like everything else in this fucked up state it's regulated to hell and back...

In 1957, wild pigs were designated a game mammal by the State Legislature. The Fish and Game Commission soon established hunting seasons, bag and possession limits, method of take and the conditions for using dogs. In 1992 Fish and Wildlife Code Sections 4650 through 4657 were added that required hunters to possess wild pig license tags while hunting pigs.
