The idea of using a knife as a standoff weapon is faulty, which is why it is a bad defensive weapon. But one thing to be said about knives is that a visible pocket clip sticking out of your jeans might keep a Tyrone from trying any shit. People are afraid of knives and getting cut, but that doesn't mean they make effective tools for self defense. It isn't easy to do or easy to live with stabbing someone to fucking death and anything less means your knife is innefective.

I still think if shit were to go down, I would be one of the first to know about it and could get away safe. I have training my situational awareness each day on campus and I already figured out my escape routes for the places I visit often. I usually scan everyone within at least 15 feet of me in all directions. If someone looks sketchy, I move away if possible or watch them closely and get ready to draw my knife. A knife like my Espada XL would be very difficult to stop for an untrained attacker in cqc and I would sleep like a baby knowing that I had to protect myself and those around me. Even still, I would have to go on the attack while the attacker was looking in the other direction... A pistol is definitely superior, but I still think self defense is at least possible with a good knife and a bit of situational awareness.
