how the fuck do I figure out what's wrong? I have cleaned the fucking barrel a ton and the rifling appears strong but I just can't figure out where the fuck these bullets are going.

should I take it to a gunsmith and see if the sights are fucked?

>Most milsurps are sighted in much farther than that.

I have contemplated testing at 100m but even then if the rifle is aiming high for a distance of 100m shouldn't I be seeing it on the paper when I aim low?

the fucky thing is it seems to be either shooting way fucking left or way fucking right but I can't figure it out even after 60+ rounds. I have deliberately shot low and right and hit paper once and then repeating that same action it didn't hit the paper at all.

I used PPU 196 grain with 12.7 grain for my early shots and they hit paper but it was erratic.

today I used PPU national match with 200 and 12.96 and holy fuck out of 30 rounds I hit paper maybe 4 times.

>>

>>33425545

I had the EXACT same problem with a Yugo Mauser when I was sighting it in with a scope mounted on the rear sight. Here's what I did step by step:

>Mount scope (or in your case, skip this step to use iron sights)
>Set up a nice large paper target
>Get REALLY close to it, say 5 yards
>Aim at the center and fire, inspect paper to see if the shot landed where it was intended to land
>If it landed correctly, back up another 5-10 yards and repeat
>keep doing this until you finally see a noticeable difference in where you aim and where the bullet hits

In the case of a scope for mine, I simply had to zero it in properly. Once it was fulled zeroed, it shot flawlessly. I've been using Turkish surplus ammo in mine, and I'm nailing a 3 inch target at 100 meters with little effort on my end.

Supposedly Turkish was too hot for them, or so Ian claims.

https://www.forgottenweapons.com/why-we-dont-use-turkish-8mm-surplus/

I shoot it all the time through a Mauser, but I have no idea how it performs in a semi.
>>
>>33425877

That's odd, because the fact that it has a firing pin holder (or whatever you call it) in the stock, along with that band placement means it's a CZ.

Oh it's you. Yeah your rifle is really neat. Here I was thinking it had an original Gew.98 barrel on it but seeing the CZ mark on the sight base probably blows that out of the water.

>>33425899
These long Yugo Mod.98 rifles are an interesting mix of Imperial German Gew.98 and Austrian M1914 Mauser parts (which Serbia got many of as reparations from WW1), with Gew.98M and Kar.98k parts from the Nazi German invasion 20 years later. Now maybe there are some Czech Mauser parts in there too; Yugoslavia bought an unknown number of Vz.98/22 rifles and 90,000 Vz.24 rifles from CZ in the 1920s and '30s.

damn I thought it was an original gew 98 barrel too.

>Looks like 8785 to me.

yeah the W was blocking the 7 in the picture. either way the stock doesn't match anything. could that be causing additional problems in aiming/shooting?
>>
>>33426281

I wouldn't think so. I have a Yugo M24/47 with zero matching parts and it still fires fine.
>>
>>33426281
>I thought it was an original gew 98 barrel too.
It might still be; only the Gew.98 and Czech Mausers used that style of front sight, so a Czech sight base would go on a Gew.98 barrel. Take the action out of the stock and look for any markings on the underside of the barrel.
>pic related, my Gew.98's firing proof and acceptance marks

>could that be causing additional problems in aiming/shooting?
Always a possibility, but my shooter-grade "Gew.98" has a poorly-fitted Turkish replacement stock and it still shoots just fine. Really I think you should start with a big piece of paper at close range (like 50 yards) and put a target in the center and shoot at that to determine where the bullets are going.

You said your receiver is marked "Mod.98"? It's probably a Kar.98k receiver, though I have seen Yugo rifles with "M.98" stamped on the receiver wall in the same place so they did sometimes re-mark rifles. Here's what's on the underside of me 1914 Mauser-brand-Mauser Gew.98. God knows what any of this shit means, but any Fraktur letters on the underside of your own receiver mean it might be Imperial German too.

>>33426621

here's a picture of the receiver but from the underside there's really no fraktur lettering only numbers and those star things.

That looks like a Kar.98k receiver then. Why the Germans marked them "Mod.98" instead of "Kar.98" like they did before I'll never know.

"PREDUZECE 44" is the Yugo military control code for the old Military Technical Institute factory in Kragujevac, Serbia. Since 1964 it has been known as "Crvena Zastava", or "Red Flag Works".

>>33427156
The "sS" is, I think, for "schweres Spitzgeshoss" or "heavy pointed bullet". Meaning the 197.5gr .323" projectile the Germans standardized on in 1934. The rear sight base is interchangeable, so the idea was that it would be replaced with a new one for whatever weight bullet the troops were using; the old 154gr S-Patrone or the new 197.5gr sS-Patrone. It's an original inter-war German part. The little bird is an acceptance mark.

so I have a kar 98k receiver. but the barrel length is 30" didn't the germans move to a 25" once they gave the designation Kar 98? or is this something with the yugos just saying fuck it and mix and matching?

>is this something with the yugos just saying fuck it and mix and matching?
That exactly. Serbia/Yugoslavia actually had a fair number of long Mausers they got as WW1 reparations: 71,000 approximately, about half German Gew.98s in 8x57mm and half Austrian M1914s in 7x57mm. Starting in 1933 the M1914s were shortened and re-barreled to 8x57mm in order to make them conform to the new standard M1924 short rifle the Yugo Army had adopted. In 1939 it became the Gew.98s' turn, but only about half were done when the Axis forces invaded Yugoslavia in 1941. During the war Tito's Partizans were able to sneak into the untended factory and assemble a couple thousand working rifles before the Germans got wise, but after the war there would have been thousands of long Mauser parts sitting in a warehouse in Uzice. My guess is that these long rifles are what came of Tito's government deciding to throw all those parts together to make working rifles.

>does the receiver just screw into the barrel?
Yes.
>I assume it's a bad idea to unscrew them and look at them?
Not if you know what you're doing. Sometimes –and depending on the manufacturer– once a Mauser rifle has had its barrel installed and properly headspaced an index mark is made at the junction of barrel and receiver, thus allowing easy re-assembly if the barrel ever has to be taken off for some other reason. This only works if the barrel is serial-matched to the receiver, however.

You can see it here at the top of the receiver ring, going around the edge and down to the barrel shoulder.

However, it's almost never necessary to dismount a milsurp rifle barrel from its receiver. These parts have usually been together for decades and can take some force to dislodge; best to just let them be.

Here's what the receiver ring threads looks like from the inside.

That's not too uncommon to see bamboo rods there. I suppose when they removed the monopods, dust covers, and sometimes the AA sights and cleaning rods to send to the scrap heap, I think soldiers that were issued ones without cleaning rods put those in there so they can still stack the gun.

Nice. I love my 96-38 but I have to admit I struggle with the sights.

I just got back from trying out some loads in my 96, trying to get approximately m/41 velocity. I think their load was 46.3gr of NC1220 and so far 46gr of N165 gives me 2577fps as average so the powders must be comparable, I expect another tenth of a grain or two will get me to 2600. Will make it easier to match sights but I think their bullets probably had a better BC than the cheap PPU I use so at longer ranges I'll still be dropping more.

Probably another 500k-1M were destroyed by captain crunch. Leaving at worst 4.1 million. There were then battlefield losses and guns that were just pushed overboard after WW2. Again estimates but I would give a good estimate of 400k. So at worst case 3.7M left. Now we also had lend lease where we lent many M1s to foreign countries 170k went to Iran which we will never get back so that's 3.53. Free France during WW2 got 60k not sure how many came back from there. And an innumerable amount of rifles got modified for training and became drill rifles. Many became ceremonial rifles taking more out of the pool. We really don't know how many garands there are in existance anymore.

A good comparison to the garand is the sks. There were more than 15 million SKs produced.
The price for the garand makes sense for the relative rarity that they are.
If for sheer numbers alone the SKS should be 1/5 the price of a garand but you can get a nice garand from the cmp for double the price of an SKS these days
>>
>>33430803
No it's because you heard wrong. Milsurp is not cheap and never will be again. If you have no interest in being a collector then just find something else.
>>33430449

>>
>>33431402
They can take a full load just fine... there is nothing neutered about m2 ball loads. The garand just requires specific pressure curves. If you use the right powder there is no issue at all. You can use a wide array of bullet weights and a wide array of powders

I'm just new to guns, I have a 10/22 and want something bigger/cooler/more interesting and I love the milsurp stuff.

I just don't know where to start, is there a milsurp sticky or pastebim? What kind of rifle should I target as a first purchase?

I'm a leaf so not sure if availability in Canada might be a big factor. Anyways, Mosin? SKS? Mauser?

Thanks for the help, n-n-no bully pls.
>>
>>33431512
if anything low end stuff is more available in canada than the us because of import laws. Get a svt 40 or something.
>>
>>33431460
Well first, it's a generally understood colloquialism, but if you really want to be pedantic about it fine. You can use something that isn't M2 ball ammo, so long as you stay inside the pressure curve. I'll concede that point. But that's still a flaw in the design. My SVT doesn't have that problem. My SKS doesn't have that problem. My Mas 49 doesn't have that problem. They either self regulate or have an adjustable gas valve.
>>
>>33431512
>I'm a leaf

SKS is obvious and easy, but the SVT-40 is Leaf-masterrace-tier and you should definitely get the auto-nugget.

The bayonets don't always fit on the rifles. Japanese soldiers would try to find one that's not too loose or too tight for them to have. Not going on is better than one that doesn't want to come off.

I used to own one like that (pic related). I started pounding on the pommel with my wrist and right as I thought that was a stupid idea to be looking right at the thing, it flies off and kisses my cheek right below my eye.

It was in the 1930s. All Tokyo Arsenal rifles didn't have guards. When Kokura and Nagoya took over production from Tokyo they started out with the non guarded front sight, but quickly transitioned to having one.

That's also only for rifles. Carbines always had guards.

You can check Forgotten Weapons YT channel for that.

Here's an appetizer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKyey_XTcws

It's direct impingement, stripper clip fed, 7.5mm semi auto. The magazine is also easily detachable.

maybe im wrong, i just thought these looked like garands
>>
>>33434611
Those were the two I noticed, the right one almost certainly is, and the left one I think probably is too. At first I saw that bit of silver near the left one's sight and thought it looked like a bolt handle but now I think it's just something deeper in the stack.

What would be considered WWII correct?
>>
>>33435132
It would look like mine. It would have the black enamel paint on the metal parts. Everything was milled. Had a non hooded front sight and doesn't have a ring for the front sling swivel; it's a bar on the side and bottom. The rear sight doesn't have a bottom. Note that several of those features changed a little bit later after production was restarted in late 1944.

I got mine at a gun show in 2015 for 350
>>
>>33425967
no. its a $1,000 rifle that can still be bought for half of that
>>
>>33425967
I mean, they should in theory still be selling in the 300-450 range, but the only place to get them right now is private sale and auction sites.

about to buy a matching numbers k98 for $1000. am I paying too much?
>>
>>33435402
no, depends on condition, maker, parts, lots of factors. rare makers can be $3k for a matching example, even more

I can't get this damn tang screw out of the stock/tangs. I broke one of my screw bits already, fucker is in there good. Been soaking in kroil all day.

Anyone have an idea how to apply heat without torching the stock?
>>

>Anyone have an idea how to apply heat without torching the stock?

rookie gun fag here but what if you took boiling/really hot water and dipped a qtip in it and then immediately applied to that screw?

I don't know how bad boiling water would screw with that type of wood/finish but the qtip would at least help keep the boiling water on the target screw.
>>
>>33436287
I doubt it would even phase the urushi honestly.

Worth a shot i guess. But I have my doubts this will apply enough heat.
>>
>>33436238
>all day.
Let it soak for 2 or three days.
>>
>>33433807
the British cut the .303 chambers loose so that dirty ammo would chamber. the round headspaces on the rim so a loose chamber isnt necessarily bad. and you cannot fix it short of re-reaming the barrel and screwing it in further, work for a gunsmith
>>
>>33425520
In the early 90s they were less than $200. Oh for a time machine.
>>
>>33433016
>non matching stock, non matching rear sights, probably other shit doesnt match. the price is about right for that

Rear sight numbers do not match on 96/11. The stock number on the outside is the Canton armory inventory number. The stock serial is under the barrel.

That is a correct gun
