But what caused the overnight rust in the first place? Because he removed the oil coat from the guns with dishsoap and let it drip dry overnight? Would he have been out of problems if he'd wiped them down and oiled them immediately afterwards? What if he wiped them down with a dry towel and oiled them the next day?

Steel with its protective coating of oil removed will oxidize (rust) quickly. Especially if it has been recently wet.

Not the guy you replied to corrosive ammo is a bitch. People say windex helps it but its basically the water content in it that cleans out the corrosive salts. So water works even better. I have a black powder revolver and if i clean it with patches and solvent it takes forever. Putting it under really hot water, drying it, then one solvent patch to make sure its clean (always is) and then oiling it takes a lot less time than the traditional way and gets better results (at least for my black powder) and as long as you take care to dry and oil it properly doesn't cause damage.
