fast forward to today an now you got all your leet airsoft operators with BUMP helmets

It's not at all how they train. A helmet is a defensive element. Delta doesn't do defense.

They are fully offense and thus mobility is valued over armor.

I'm guessing they did enough crazy dangerous insertion shit to warrant a helmet but weren't necessarily concerned with ballistic protection.

Climbers have been wearing non ballistic helmets for a long time prior.

I used to do downhill longboarding. As stationed at McChord AFB skating around the flight line when a whole jeep full of Combat Controllers stopped to check my deck out.

Apparently longboarding and spec ops has been trying to become a thing for awhile they said. Greatest silent way to get down mountains ever.

>>
>>33401648
Most of these guys would deploy from helicopters and cars, and they didn't really need heavy ballistic helmets. Now that ballistic helmets are lighter than ever, I'm guessing they're using it more.
>>
>>33401746
>longboarding downhill

Downhill biking down that road would be ten times faster, more fun and more comfy. Longboarding is for homo ballerina wannabes.

You can get up to 60 mph skating downhill. And it's a lot more fun than a granny bicycle desu. And comfy?

Is standing and kneeling a real chore for you?
>>
It was the 90s, everything was in the proto stages of the HSLD operational gear for operating operators shit we see today. This includes bump helmets, which back then were literally just re-purposed rock-climbing and skateboarding apparel.
>>
>>33401800
>60mph

Dude you can do it 50% faster with a bike.
And at that speed I'd much rather sit on something than have to fucking balance my shit. Skateboarding was always degenerate as fuck.

I think a bike would be better for the gear too. I've done alotta biking and long boarding while carrying shit just to get around and the bike is just faster, more efficient, and safer. Just some bikes they can ditch once shit goes down would be alright. You don't even have to train your niggas either

I don't know, but they worked. I read a book written by one of the SEALs who boarded Iraqi ships around their oil rigs back in '91, and those skateboard helmets kept him from getting brained by an Iraqi swinging a fire extinguisher.
>>

Pro-tec helmet, see: bump helmet
The idea was not to ruin your dome during entry, etc, and be lightweight, used where ballistic protection was a lesser concern than mobility and the like. They still exist today but they've gotten leaner and many offer ballistic protection. When you see modern coolguy helmets those are their descendants.

It's police work, not dress up

Americans, when will they learn?
>>
>>33410249
Exactly this my dude. People forget or maybe weren't old enough to remember what the "tactical market" looked like before the War On Terror. Before that there wasn't a huge population buying tactical gear and no incentive for a company to really specialize in it.

If you wanted military gear the choices were GI gear, some police issue gear, occasional foreign gear like the Chicom, or repurposing non-tactical civilian gear. There was a lot more DIY then.

These days if you want a bump helmet you have dozens of tactical options. Back in the day it didn't matter how much money you had, nobody was simply making them. Take a civilian skate helmet and maybe paint it and that it the solution. Want a light on it? No "tactical" options so you hose clamp a flashlight to it.
>>
>>33410614
isn't tactical shit just regular shit covered in moles and rails

>>
Somewhat serious question for the group: if I'm making a budget SHTF list, is a bump helmet still a viable option or should I just not get a helmet? I'm not putting down more than fifty dollars for a helmet for a set of gear that will likely never be used.
>>
>>33411115
I don't think I'd worry about it unless you have off road vehicles and for some reason expect to be patrolling with them or from a truck bed.
Do you plan on assaulting or fighting within many naval vessels, crawl spaces, or any other tight spaces where you will be moving quickly enough that hitting your head will be a concern?

I have one but it's mostly a host for NODs, I certainly don't ever expect to need it for anything other than fun and larp.
Do what you think is best for your situation, maybe ask in /gq/ if you can stomach the smell of mass autofellatio.
>>
>>33401648
Because helmets suck massive cream cock. They're heavy, they slide around on your head, restrict your motion, and don't help in most direct action situations.
>>
>>33401679

>>
>>33401674

>>

>>
I have the real answer, but its not really tacticool. Head bump protection, no ballistic protection at all.
>>
>>33401674
This is bullshit speak for. "Light helmets are light"
>>
>>33410820
also velcro
>>
>>33401648
Pretty much aside from the threat of shrapnel from enemy artillery, helmets are just to keep you from braining yourself on a rock when you slip while carrying 60lbs of gear. So when you have groups like delta that aren't exactly worried about getting mortar rounds called in on them during an urban raid, they'll wear a lighter helmet that offers good head bump protection while being much lighter and more comfortable than a ballistic helmet a conventional force might wear.
>>
>>33409931
I have seen multiple videos of soldiers taking 7.62x39 to the dome-piece and living to tell about it because of Kevlar helmets. Just because it's only rated IIIA doesn't mean it can't help against larger calibers, especially at range.

Oh, so you're a pussy who can't actually ride his damn bike. Learn to use your gears, and you'll save money, weight, maintenance, noise, and mechanical complexity.
>>
>>33415442
one is a full sized axe
>>
>>33415473
NIGGA, we are talking about spooks and operators that need a device for 1 mission, if you had a bike with 200 lbs of gear on it I think a drive assist motor would be helpful if you had to go up any kind of incline.
Also that's not my bike it's one from google.
>>
>>33415162
Sure, but two points:
>In the 1990s the options were basically to wear PASGT helmets, which fucking sucked. Even if you fixed the suspension, they were shaped in a way where the back was liable to get pushed and cause the front to hang over your eyes. When you see these tacticool 1990s guys in skate helmets keep in mind the limited options. These days operational operators can rock minimalist ballistic helmets and you dont really see them using skate helmets anymore hecause of that.
>The argument of physical protection is always to be put against weight and loss of situational awareness. You can stick a guy in 100+ lbs of armor, making him physically protected but quite useless. That's an extreme example, but there is always a balance trying to be found. A faster, more mentally aware soldier might have less physcial protection, but he might also have the clear mind and awareness to move better and shoot better and avoid being hit in the first place. It is a balancing act. I have seen helmets stop bullets in person. I have also seen heavy armor weight cause soldiers to get bogged down and exposed to ambushes they might have avoided had they been allowed to wear lighter gear. Especially on the noggin weight is noticable.
>>
My old roommate was a SEAL from like 1992-2002, he had a pic of himself climbing a rope ladder up the side of a ship wearing a wetsuit, chuck taylors and a skate helmet, and had a slung MP-5...and looked like he was about 15, although was probably about 20-21. Wish to hell I had a copy of it, such a cool pic.

>>
>>33415510
Get a touring crankset and cassette, that'll get your ratios in order.
>>
>>33415747
True the whole point of drafting is that it fucks with airflow so you can go that fast safely. I remember seeing a clip on tosh.0 where a guy got towed by his buddy to get the bike up to 80 mph, it went ok until he wobbled slightly and ate shit on the interstate.

They still use them. Solid black Chucks are apparently pretty ideal for maritime operations.
