>>
Not so much a mistake, but a sound design trope that drives me up the fucking wall is whenever someone points a gun at someone in a TV show or movie and the gun makes those click-clack noises like it's about to fall apart into a million pieces.
>>
>>33401443
People pointing guns at others for extended periods of time, then a cocking sound is made as soon as the tension is ratcheted up, Sometimes even without movement associated with the sound.

In the Bourne Identity, when Castel crashes through Bourne's window.

He comes through spraying and praying, and then they fight for the gun. When the mag runs dry, it makes this "ratatatata" clicking sound. Like the hammer is battery lowered. I cringe every time I hear it.
>>
>>33401914
This. If you watch television or movies you're just subjecting yourself to propaganda under he guise of entertainment.
>>
When someone has a gun pointed, usually a shotgun, and they pump it or rack a round to show they mean business. Sometimes it happens multiple times in a scene without any rounds being ejected or showing the gun was unloaded in the first place.

>>33401941
In the show Banshee the main character holds someone at shotgun point for awhile. Then he pumps the shotgun and shoots them. The neat thing is you hear an empty shell hitting the ground because before that he had been chasing them and shooting at them. It's also justified by the bad guy being a good distance away and already wounded.

This and most scenes in Daredevil with the punisher. Wtf is cover and concealment? (I know why they did it so the audience could see but a flash from a scope then a cut to would have made more sense)

Also most Punisher scenes. Marvel in general doesn't give a fuck about realism when it comes to combat, I guess that's what I get watching tv taken from funny pages.

Never seen anyone fumble a reload or fail to fully pull back the bolt or some shit like that in a high stress situation.

Shit, I saw it all the time in Afghanistan. Small stuff, like forgetting to hit the bolt release the first time, or not getting a machine gun belt seated properly. Or mechanical stuff, like a mag not fully ejecting due to dirt or whatever.

Small details like that could easily be used to ratchet up the tension of a scene and be perfectly believable.

There was a scene in I think maybe the 4th Dirty Harry movie where Harry gets suspended and he's out shooting this gun in a forest. His black friend shows up and Harry proceeds to fire this 44 magnum and his friend is literally standing right next to the barrel wearing no hearing protection. He didn't go deaf or anything after either. That scene REALLY pissed me off since Clint Eastwood is pro-gun so I thought he'd have more sense.

Realistic physics. Have the range and trajectory match the caliber, make weather and air pressure affect the projectile, ricochets that can cause damage, this>>33404967, weapon malfunctions (I.E. failure to feed/fire/eject), wet/damaged rounds have a chance to fail, custom loads: practical or silly doesn't matter to me, realistic damage caused to targets, environment, vehicles, whatever the bullet hits should react accordingly.

Thanks - taking notes. Current project will be kind of light on realism, but another more mil sim type one will have an autistic amount of it.

But seeing as the guy in vid related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ABGIJwiGBc got hit in the earpro with a .50 bmg ricochet, and I've been hit by bb and .177 pellet ricochets I'd imagine it can happen with any caliber if it hits a resilient enough target at the right angle.

There's a scene in Logan where the titular character is removing 'bullets' from his body. In the close-up shot they are not bullets, but rather spent casings.
>>
>>33405017

who is this semen demon?
>>
>>33405359

when a bullet hits something, one of three things happen:

>bullet enters object
>bullet pulverizes against object
>bullet is redirected and ricochets

the first two are the most common. ricochets mostly happen with low powered rounds like .22 lr. I've ricocheted 22's off of old, hard logs and rocks. 9mm and 45 will sometimes do it too.

more powerful rounds usually only ricochet if they hit something very hard at an odd angle. if they hit straight on, the bullet is most likely to be pulverized.

hope that clears some of that up.

Watching person of interest. You can tell Amy Acker either doesnt like guns or something, as every time her character starts shooting (muh dual wield) theres no recoil and the slide never moves.

Gets worse in later seasons as she fires an AK74SU one handed while upside down in a car, making two perfect leg shots.

There's a webm that pops up on here of two women firing handguns as they move across a room and one keeps inexplicably moving the guns on top of each other. It's from that.

Any night vision device making that "BWEEEEEE!!" noise when someone turns them on....

They want to make shit realistic, they'll show the guy smacking the NOD's into his hand, trying to get just a bit more life out of the intensifier tube because it's a clapped out piece of shit in need of depot level overhaul...

>entire movie is kind of a flashback sequence
>literally almost exactly the "record scratch/freeze frame, yeah that's me" /tv/ meme
>the antagonist racks the slide of his pistol in the very first scene of the film
>he then does this again, multiple times, throughout the film as he holds the protagonist telling the flashback story at gunpoint
>no cartridges are ejected at any point

It's sad because it's one of my favorite films and yet this one thing is so poorly done but you know it's just to impress normies
>>
>>33401458
Sound designer/foley guy here.

It's due to 2 things.

1)
people who know fuck all about guns making movies and then that sound becoming expected and the norm. People will think something is missing now if they don't hear it.

2)
Hyper-realism. Movies that aren't explicitly trying to be realistic tend to have more weapon handling noise. It's genuinely there to add tension. Sounds implying an escalation of force or think of a horror movie where the protagonist is being hunted in a dark building. It sets up the sound for more impact like this:
>heavy breathing/fear
>weapon noises and loud detailed sounds grab the listener
>silence...
>BOO spooky crazed rapist. Everyone jumps out of their seats

I graduated a bachelor of science in sound technology. I'm working freelance at the moment. It's hard to become in house staff. My buddy just started working at pinewood studios in the UK. He's trying to get me in there when he can. It's literally a case of slog and freelance until you catch a break or you're artistically good and someone notices.

Build up a good portfolio. I haven't got much begin me. Just a few art films I helped some hipsters with.

The scene in the latest Mad Max, where Max misses two shots, then the chick takes the rifle from him, rests it on his shoulders for stability, and fires that way.

Rest of the movie soundtrack should have been an agonizing 1000hz sine wave slowly fading to silence after that shot.

The best spacefights I've seen are in that scifi show The Expanse. The combat is more realistic and is akin to highly mobile submarines duking it out rather than just being the same as an in atmosphere dogfight in spess.

I'm currently redoing all of the Backgrounds, Cut FX, and Foley for the home invasion scene in John Wick for my final project. Can't find the full clip, but there's this scene in Tremors 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ew_jfj9798

The shot ends up splattering the shrieker, penetrating a brick wall, a barn, a cement mixer, and the entire engine block of the car they wanted to get away in.

But, I think that's actually accurate for that weapon.
