Need for what? Four nuclear subs are enough for deterrence. But for force projection you need quite a bit more.

The correct answer is: More than everybody else in the world

If you can't walk from California to China across the backs of surfaced subs, we don't have enough.

As many as the Russian and Chinese navies combined, the second and third largest, whilst having a technological edge in every field. So that's something like 400 combat vessels and ~1,000 aircraft.

Hunters Point should be reopened, but as a drone deployment facility. I want to see liberals cry crocodile tears as silly cone valley lines up to get fat government contracts.
>>
>>33395494
none, in the coming wars we will exclusively use drones with bombs and missels, and exploding robotic dogs will parachute down into enemy lands. Future wars last a week tops.

"Red used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of Blue's fleet by the second day of the exercise. In a preemptive strike, Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that overwhelmed the Blue forces' electronic sensors and destroyed sixteen warships. This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel."

the war game had turned from an honest, open, free playtest of U.S. war-fighting capabilities into a rigidly controlled and scripted exercise intended to end in an overwhelming U.S. victory,[3] alleging that "$250 million was wasted"

Only if it's Kirk or Picard's Enterprise.
>>
>>33395494
Enough that an enemy submarine fleet can't impede travel and deployment of carrier groups.

Anyone that doesn't have the US navy opposes it with subs because they're easier to build than carriers+5gen fighters and they work.

So the US navy's main selection pressure is to be able to survive or defeat sub fleets.

If you think this says anything about the defensive capabilities of the USN you are fucking stupid.

I know you don't actually want to think critically, especially when your biases are being filled, but you should. If you did you might find the following:

The USN was not allowed to use their defensive systems. This was due to the JSAF software used to resolve simulated combat being unable to model neutral targets. JSAF was having the USNs defensive systems fire on the neutral targets, thinking they were threats.

The USN was not allowed to deploy their ships in a manner consistent with how they would have in reality. Due to the JSAF system and the limits on where the ships could deploy in the real world, the Navy found itself deployed in a manner that was not realistic.

Moreover, the entire exercise was designed to test different command and control concepts. It was not designed to test combat system effectiveness, or tactics. As part of the test, you want to see how the system reacts under specific parts of a typical operation. If you had no scripted events, then the situations might not even arise, then you will be unable to test the C2 concepts in that circumstance.

Likewise, if you sink everything on day one, and don't refloat it, then you lose all the data you could gather on subsequent days.

People who think MC2002 shows some great weakness in the US military are fucking retarded children.

>russia and china can field about 60 total naval aircraft
>over half their navies either are rusted over relics of the pre-cold war or would better be classified as coast guard cutters

If you can launch cruise missiles from motorcycles and skiffs.

Picard is only slightly more compromised by being enmeshed with the borg than trump is with the russians, so fair comparison.
