How does Best Korea even have military R&D? I get that China gives them all sorts of shit so they'll troll the world for them as a proxy, but every documentary I've seen about Best Korea has the populace basically living in abject poverty and a state of education akin to dark age peasants. Like, China has send them food all the time because they can't even grow rice properly.

So how do they have anything that works besides Chinese AKs?

Maybe you shouldn't believe western propaganda quite so readily. They've recovered from the famine in the 90s that came along with the end of Soviet oil gibs and are now fairly stable.

>So how do they have anything that works besides Chinese AKs?
The Nips industrialized the fuck out of them during the early 20th century which gave them engineers, skilled labor, management expertise etc. The industrial base was obliterated during the Korean War but they rebuilt it during the apex of commie achievement worldwide (60s-70s). They are determined to be self-reliant so they have maintained and expanded their technical skills. Best Korea is impressive in that regard, even with their allies gone, constant bickering and posturing from the ruling clans in the south and obsessive memeing by the West, they've managed to hold everyone off. Even Mattis isn't gonna step on that snake.

The latest Arms Control Wonk podcast also highlighted some interesting shifts in how the DPRK is displaying their missiles; instead of simple flight tests, the recent launches have all been simulated attacks on military targets by the units that will actually be using them for real should war break out.

>they've managed to hold everyone off

Please be fucking reasonable, the country and it's economy and industry are absolute shit, sanctioned by the rest of the world to hell and back. Sure we don't get the whole picture but the country is shit and they haven't managed to hold anyone off.

The political ambition and will is not there to actually overthrow the system in place, there is a combined understanding of what the Chinks reaction would be and how the casualties in worst korea would be like (especially seoul). Aside from those two simple facts there is the atrocious state the country is in, it would take an absurd amount of money and time to rebuild the country to an acceptable standard, this not even including the gigantic cultural differences that have arisen over time.

>>33388463
They have an upper class of scientist and engineers obviously, even though there are sanctions in place these could make some significant advances with regards to some military technologies, But with regards to what the Chinks, Russians and Americans have done it’s a technological power gap of several decennia. What we are seeing is the result of a massive effort to create ballistic missiles to, aside from this the North Korean military effort is ancient as shit.

They're poor, but they spend shitloads on the military.

Let's compare them to another small country with a lot of Domestic R&D, like Sweden.

Sweden spend 1% of their GDP on the military with a GDP of 500 Billion.

North Korea have a GDP of 25 billion, but spend 25%+ of it on the military.

A lot of the R&D isn't as hard as you think, the Soviet Union and America figured out nukes and ICBMs in the 40s and 50s.
>>
>>33388463
We can laugh all we want about their small arms but their country is basically a huge underground bunker with enough food from china to sustain prolonged war.
having nuclear capacities and ICBMs is more firepower than most countries in the world.

They haven't shown that they have a functioning ICBM yet (unless you count ones that need to sit on a launch pad) but otherwise yes.

You don't need ICBMs when your Scuds and Nodongs can hit anything in South Korea or Japan with a nuclear warhead.

He doesn't want that and the country is already equipping hard for modern food manufacturing machines from China.

Yes, but until they can field a road mobile ICBM they don't have the capacity.

If they have to put their missile on a launch pad and fuel it the ROKAF/USAF will be able to destroy it long before it gets launched. It has zero survivability when compared to something like a scud.

The starvation part probably isn't a plus.

When you hear stories about how 'when I was a kid growing up in (insert eastern bloc state here) my mother used to send me and my baby sister across the city to queue for food' your first impression is 'wow, they had to queue for food, how awful'. But when you look a little deeper you also have to appreciate how it was safe for little kids to travel across a city by themselves, which you can't do in the west anymore.

When old people signal nostalgia for the communist days, they aren't necessarily endorsing socialist economics, or breadlines or censorship and so on. When you look at things like Soviet music, you realise that despite all the efforts by the commies to destroy the organic culture of their nations, they were never quite as successful at it as global capitalism has been.

Nostalgia for communist times is just nostalgia for tradition, and it's worth taking seriously even if this post is just anecdotal.

>>33389416
Kim has to destroy a US buildup before it has a chance to attack. He either uses his nukes straight away or he loses them very fast. If I were a US soldier I'd want to get out of my staging ares in Japan and the ROK as fast as possible, as I'd feel more vulnerable there than on the road to Pyongyang.
>>
>>33389449

I'm still not sure if I am going to pursue this TEFL certificate I was thinking about but I am damn sure if I do I won't be going to Korea because this shit is starting to seem increasingly likely. If there was a way to bet "Norks will use a nuke in 2017" I'd put down 100 on it.

It'll really be a question of if Kim thinks there will be an attack or not because if he thinks so the nukes will definitely fly. I'm thinking Seoul is more likely to get blasted than Tokyo or really Japan at all myself.
>>
>>33389475

If I was NK and I had 5 nukes, I wouldn't waste one on Seoul. I'd nuke Incheon, Mokpo, Busan(3 major harbors), Daegu(Daegu AB), and Sejong (ROKA Central Logistics Complex)

Harbors are going to be the major targets because the US reinforcements will come through them. Seoul would be like 15th on my list because I'd nuke the airbases second, logistics complexes 3rd.

The last missile test (not counting the one yesterday) was 4 Scud-ERs all aimed at MCAS Iwakuni - not that they'll be using 4 nukes for one airbase, maybe they'll launch a barrage of missiles with only one nuke, or maybe they only envisage a conventional strike on that target.

IIRC they had about 20 warheads in 2011.
>>
FUCK THE NORKS
>>
>>33389591

So lets say they have 30. Assume (reasonably + historical) that the warhead reliability is 0.6. That's around 2 per target, more if they count the PAC-3 / PAC-2 batteries on some of those targets. So the 12 targets on my list would be:

Harbors(5) - Mokpo, Busan, Gwangyang, Incheon, Kunsan

Airbases(10) - Daegu, Gwangju, Wonju, Seosan, Suwon.... maybe a few Japan-based US installations. Depends on what aircraft is based on said installations, and how well the Norks know them.

Others would include stuff like the Central Air Defense Coordination Center, the Alternate Air Defense Coordination Center (those two coordinate ROK anti-missile efforts), maybe Army HQ at Daejeon, possibly the HQs for each Field Army HQs, stuff like that.
>>

Yeah, it's pretty hard for a pedophile to focus on raping kids when he's fucking starving to death.
>>
>>33389022
That's odd considering that defectors still report that the country still hasn't recovered from the massive hit it took in the 90's.
>still fairly stable
If Un has to constantly whack motherfuckers to keep his gov't in line, then I wouldn't call that stability.
>Self Reliance
Also a meme for the most part, even at their best the Norks relied heavily on imports from the USSR/Chicoms to keep themselves in the good place. Without them it's been a nightmare trying to use what little arable land they have (North Korea is much more mountainous than the South) to try and feed themselves. They've only managed to come back to a shadow of what they used to be able to produce in terms of industrial capacity.
>>33388463
When you divert almost everything you have to your military and let your civilian population starve, you can still cobble together enough money to do some R&D/weapons procurement. A lot of their work revolves around rudimentary upgrades to old shit they have.

North Korea's shitty but they likely have at least a few smart people who like to tinker and see what works.

Give my friends and myself enough facilities and money and we'll eventually crank out something cool.

A bunch of Danish amateurs managed to build a suborbital rocket. Same goes for a team of amateurs building a large, functional submarine. A guy has built a GPS-guided cruise missile in his garage.

Granted, the GPS guidance won't work for Norks but it's still interesting to note.

Complete economic and political collapse of the early 90's is somehow supposed to be descriptive of the history of eastern block countries in general?
It's about as retarded as comparing the western and American situation to the Great Depression, because people then too had to queue up for food.

Funny how people with no other experience than the propaganda and fearmongering of earlier generations thinks he has a balanced perspective on the eastern block.

>whether you're allowed to eat
What is this even supposed to imply? You can't be this dumb in the head.

>whether you're sent to a gulag from a secret trial, whether your family will be executed as dissidents in the next wave of purges,
Stalin, 1930's to 1953, these things literally didn't exist the way you describe them in post-stalin USSR.
Did you film or write a very anti-government piece? It'll be censored, or in the worst case you'll be exiled (to a western country).

>brainwashes your children to rat on you and causes mass famines
These things never actually happened, you'll be lucky if you find more than two examples.
Mass famines were a political tool in a period following a very bloody civil war, this again never happened post-ww2 unless you count in mao, which wasn't part of the eastern block.

>what you're allowed to think
You can think whatever you want, being vocal about it not so much. This is still a thing in western countries, try saying something good about Hitler or something bad about immigration, society and state will pounce on you. A hairdresser said she didn't like people coming in with hijabs, lost her license and thrown in jail for hate speech. Teacher made a remark about Islam on his personal time, media whiffed it up and blew it up, lost his job and faces charges.

I read or listened to someone about this recently but I can't remember who or where. Mental gymnastic routine but it was interesting. They said societies with a "party line" were easier to live in and less stressful because you knew exactly what you were expected to do and say in public. Everyone agreed with each other and all real discussion was reserved for "11PM in the kitchen" or whatever. Societies without a party line or with multiple strains of thought are distressing because you have to navigate politics constantly and publicly. Wish I could remember who it was as they were more articulate even if the "totalitarian states are actually more free so we should start restricting speech" idea is kinda silly.
