Loving the Kershaw Dividend. Thin and lightweight with good lines. Gonna see how KAI's 420HC holds up.

Any opinions on the Kershaw Damascus steel folders? Was thinking of getting the Link or the Skyline.
>>
>>33388182
The Skyline is great, and I'd assume the Link is as well but I haven't handled one myself. If you're trying to pick between the two the Skyline is going to be a little bit smaller and has a manual flipper vs. the slightly bigger assisted Link. Skyline has G10 vs. the Link's aluminum handles. If you want a smaller Link check out the Dividend.

>Thin and lightweight

thin and lightweight, you say?
0.075'' spine, 0.032'' 1/4'' behind the edge, 0.010'' at the shoulder of the edge.
2.4 ounces with wheath. Differentially hardened 1095, heat treated for edge stability.

Essentially a fixed blade version of sodbuster knives like the gec bullnose
>>
Recently scored a Kizlyar Supreme Biker X, the gray titanium/blue G10 version with the "caged bearing" assisted opening mechanism. Out of all my knives, it's my favorite.

I own 4 Skylines, including a Damascus one.. I don't own a Link but I've handled one, and my first impressions is it maybe even better than the Skyline for the money. I was going to pick up a blue s35vn one from House Of Blades, but their out, idk if they are making more.

My only worry with the Link is that it is Speed Safe assisted. I've had two different knives with Speed Safe (ZT 0770cf M4 and Leek) fail on me. It's not big deal, in both cases KAI sent me a free replacement spring when I emailed them and said I'm fine replacing the spring my self. But it's worth considering.

>>33388573
I've yet to dive into Kizlyar... Maybe one day. But I'm glad to hear people are liking them.
>>
>>33388680
Some autists have left reviews saying the Damascus used in the Skyline isn't "real" Damascus steel, is just etched, and that the pattern will come off if you rub it hard enough. Any truth to this, or full of shit?
>>
>>33388707
I've yet to try and rub it off, but as far as I can tell and have read, Alabama Damascus is actual layered damascus. Also Kershaw is far from a snake oil company, they would not market fake damascus as real.

I can't seem to find the exact composite of it though. But from sharpening it and using it a little, I can tell it's not a bad steel. I need to take some pics of my damascus Skyline, it took a very high polish edge.

To bring out the texture of damascus, often some type of staining takes place. The different steels react differently, and that is what brings out the contrast. It's possibly that they polished off the patina, making it look like a mono steel blade.

Oh the cutting works just fine, the knife is light for it's size and the handle is comfy and ergonomic.
You can't let the weight do the work like with a hatchet. It's possible to dodge this by using the same chopping technique they use for kukris but I'm to impatient and just power through.

Slight mods to both the swisstool and sebenza: Matte/dark grey finish applied with some FeCl3 etchant.

Arrived in the mail today: Surprisingly awesome chinese "D2" knockoff fixed blade. I didn't know it had lionsteel logos on it when ordered, but it is of surprisingly awesome quality for the $28 paid. sheath fits well, although pretty thin kydex. super thick blade stock, very nicely machined g10 scales with comfy contours. I may order a few more and ask the seller if they have them without the logos.
we'll see how the blade actually holds up.

The contrast between the blade of the fixed and the finish of the seb & swisstool show the effects of the Ferric Chloride.

8Cr13MoV is not the same as 420HC, it's more comparable with a 440 based on it's carbon content but the same as 420hc based on chromium content.

Either way, it would be wrong to call it the "American version", more like 8Cr13 is the Chines Version of American 420hc.

>>33395580
Yeah it's a really nice knife. Had an absolute crap sheath though, it looked horrible, and functioned worse. I ended up getting a Kydex sheath for it.

I don't own one, but I think the Kershaw Diskin Hunter is a better knife than the Skyline fixed blade wise. I held one the other day and was really impressed, may have to get one.

Hey /k/ I wanna sell a couple of my knives. Let me know what you think of these prices.
BK10-micarta scales dyed black-custom crossdraw/scout sheath-stripped coating natural patina-added choil-used $90
LTWK Bushcrafter HC w/ handmade sheath-VERY lightly used, shaved a stick down and nothing else has been done with it $70
Ontario Carter Prime-used, cut open a beer can and fucked the finish up a little bit other than that nothing has been done with it $50
And a Ganzo 717 like new for $15

The CHRIS REEVE SEBENZA is the greatest knife ever designed. Its perfectly slender and minimalist design, when combined with a buttery smooth action, make it the most comfortable knife known to mankind. Its sharpness and speed are scientifically proven to have killed off all the dinosaurs upon its arrival to earth. A man once reportedly dropped his CHRIS REEVE SEBENZA in New York (with no damage to the Sebenza of course). The knife cut through the sidewalk and disappeared for 3 months until a Chinese man stepped on the blade coming through the dirt in a local fish market. After infection set in, he then used that same CHRIS REEVE SEBENZA to amputate his own foot in one slice. God bless Chris Reeve and praise be Sebenza.

The meme is real. I held one for the first time to other day, not actually as heavy as I was expecting because I have a few .25 knives already, some a lot larger. The handle truly is comfortable though. The micarta scales are worth it for the extra grip.

>>33400593 if talking about it's geometry, not it's weight. If I were to get one, I would probably re-grind and give it a better cutting geometry. As it is, it does have a needlessly thick cutting geometry, in the scene that a thinner edge is just as strong (vertically), and cuts better, so why have such a tick edge?

That being said, I still think it's a cool knife. I'm probably going to get a BK-9 some time soon.

I don't own one, so I can't speak for how bluky it is in pocket, not a fan of really small chunky knives like that.

As for weight though, I have a few knives that are around 6.6oz. My Tuff is 6.6, Ti Military is 6, 0562cf is 5.5.

If you wear a belt, sub 7oz knives are fine. But I do find I mostly tend to carry sub 4oz knives (besides the 0562cf) the most. And when I'm wearing loser slacks or pjs with out a belt, anything much over 3oz is too much. One of the reasons I got my Al Mar Eagle, so I could have a larger knife that is very light.

It's okay. Honestly I think if you are going to carry a knife you might as well get one that is good at utility, because 99.9% of the time that's what it's going to be used for, it's 99% as effective as a weapon as a "fighting" folder, and it's going to look better in court. That being said, the only thing to really look for while talking self defense is size. The bigger the better.

If you are looking for cheaper (sub $50); Ontario RAT 1, Kershaw Link, Kershaw Skyline, Cold Steel Medium Voyager.

If money is not an issue ($75-$240); Cold Steel Code 4, Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or Military (that's a nice big one), ZT 0452 (also big).... Really any large Cold steel Folder that you can legally carry.

Well the best self defense in general is not going to be a knife, obviously a gun, but even peperspray and some running shoes, or a baton, are more effective than a knife.

But I disagree, I see no reason why a fixed blade has any advantage over a well made folder of the same size. Any folder of any good quality should have more than strong enough of a lock to stand up to any thing fighting would put on it. Also, depending on what kind of sheath the fixed blade has, a folder can be just as fast to get in hand, if not faster with an Emerson wave opener.

If anything a good defensive folder has the advantage because for the same carry size you can have a much larger knife.

If for what ever reason I had to defend myself with a knife and I could not use one of my swords or machetes, I would grab my XL Espada, because it has more reach than any of my fixed blades, and it's faster to get in hand from pocket/sheath than any of my fixed blades with it's wave.

Why? I've handled knives from two of those 3, why yes they are very well made, but they are well past the point of diminishing returns for a functional knife. Honestly so is the ZT I listed is getting there. The Spyderco Military is probably one of the best sub 10" "defensive" knives I've handled besides it not having a wave opener, but that can be ghetto remedied with a zip tie.

Why list those 3 though? If money is not an issue, you can go a shit ton more expensive than those 3;

Nice. That, the 940-1, 917, and the Onslaught (forget the number) are the only Benchmades that really excite me. Make sure to post some pics and your thoughts on it when it comes.

Out of the 50 or so folders I have/do own, I've oddly never bought a Benchmade. I may have to pick up this or a 940-1 (if budget allows) at some point.

I promised my self that I would get a 917 as a glove box knife when I get a new car.

I love me some benchmade. I have a few others including the 940 and triage you mentioned.

The triage lives on the visor of my truck. haven't had to use it yet thankfully, but I'm glad it's there.

I'm a lefty so I gravitate towards knives that are lefty specific or fully ambidextrous.

Benchmade, spyderco, chris reeve and recently cold steel make up most of my locking production folder collection

thanks for your contribution to these threads btw.

the wave feature
the knives have a refined yet primitive esthetic that i like - a brutal 'beauty'
they feel great in your hand, so ergonomics
blade shape - CQC8 is my favored model; carried one daily for 7 - 8 years i;'ve had the Super CQC8 for a few months now and i like it even more - hueg comfortable knife
reliability - yes, i've heard endless complaints, but i've never had a problem with any i've owned abd i'd trust these knives over any other production or semi production brand
decent price in this range - $200 - $300 outside of the manufacturer's website

I've been in it about 10 years, mostly active the past 6. And roughly 40 folders, 20 fixed blades, 2 swords, 4ish machetes, 4 or so sharpening rigs, ect...

I'm amazed at the diversity of knife enthusiast here on /k. Everywhere from newknifefags to costumfags, a few knife makers, a few free hand sharpeners from the CliffStamp forum, ect..

I've been collecting for about 12 years actively. I actually used to be more into customs than I am now. With the rising cost & wait times for customs, I've sold/traded many away to pay for my other hobbies(obsessions).

Right now, I probably have around 60~80 knives of various sorts.

I try to keep a revolving door of knives, keeping the ones I like and trading the one's I can live without for something else.

Maybe... I looked in the mirror the other day and may have saw you... I'm going to stop there, it's too early for philosophical thought.

I love my Sharpmaker, was using it long before I got my Wicked Edge, and still use it for serrations.

Wiha is just the best. I actually have two sets, the single drivers, and a pocket folding kit with removable bits. For those double sided pivots.

Ren wax is the best... But I also use Hanwei Sword Oil (you can see it in the case). I'm going to get some Nano Lube for pivots, I'm tired of the grease I have.

Do you have a WE set up, or you just use the stones? If so, what you have?

The belt sander is just a 1x30 Harbor Freight, it's good for rough work and machete/sword/scythe sharpening. Thinking of trying a Work Sharp though.

Seems weird to call them whetstones, but it's not wrong. I'm building up my free hand stuff. Just got the DMT Extra Course Diamond plate for rough work and lapping, and a Naniwa Chosera 400. Just need a 3000ish to finish it off.

Flashlights have just slowly built up over the years... But between my Zebra Light sc62w for EDC and my Nitecore TM36 (car light), I'm set for a few years.

>>33408918
>Kind of a hodgepodge right now

I was thinking about the same thing, but it's a very similar handle material. More so it's not a convex grind, granted the difference between it and a full flat with a thinner bevel is pretty negligible in field use.

Honestly I think the laminated stainless Falkniven uses is perfectly suited for a knife of that size, you aren't going to (hopefully) be doing much high impact work with a knife of that size. Granted I would take something like coated 3v over it.

Really you aren't going to find a proper convex knife made of a high grade steel that is going to be cheap. The 3V Master Hunter is pretty remarkable value for around the $110 mark.

I have this

It is ok because simple is best and in adventure you want to keep it stupid simple.

Cutting performance is above-average for the industry standard on this kind of knife

Coating is sandpaper-tier shit. Gunkote is to date the best coating available in the market.

Scales look nice, like 80's and 90's military knives, but are very flat.

The knife is not a pain but it is uncomfortable to handle for long periods of time due to the flat scales. Fällkniven A1 is much more comfortable. It is also a bit heavy for its category. Not very efficient. Cold Steel SRK is much better in that aspect.

7/10 I dont understand the "ESEE makes the best tactical adventure outdoors knives" meme

The warranty is nice but not exclusive to the brand. It's only truly good if you live in USA and you dont have to pay exhorbitant amounts of taxes and shipping. However I feel like the warranty is their excuse to pump up the price 100$ since most of the time when you have no knife is because you lost it, not because you broke it somehow.
>>
>>33409618

Emerson is 90% brand image and 10% knife design.

I don't own any but I've handled/sharpened quite a few, pic related.
They are well made and good quality, a little expensive for 1095 blades, but not a rip off.

The real problem is that they have very stupidly thick edges. Honestly if you want it to cut worth a damn, and not just bounce off wood, you are going to need to put a much thinner edge on it. This is a problem with a lot of the big chopper knives from a few to many companies.

It belonged to a parent of mine, and I don't know much about it. Figured I'd leave a few pics for you guys and see what you know, think, or could tell me about it. Doesn't have a steel labeled on it, though it clearly states it's a mora. I wanna say it's at least 25 years old, but I'm not certain.

Like I said, I just had it in for sharpening, so I only did a little whittling with it.

It's really well made, like tops in general, but I personally don't see much utility in the design. Most of my issue is with how steep the grind is, no reason for a knife to have a thicker geometry than a good axe. Also I just don't see the utility in having little hook in the edge over a more conventional grind.

I would say it's worth it if you really like the design, it's not a rip off, but for the price something like a Junglas or something from Scrapyard/Swamp Rat or BRK will out perform it.

I want one. I won't even bitch about the price since that's what decent OTFs seem to cost anyway. What I hate is Microtech's attitude, and their bullshit. I void warranties on my knives anyways, but it's bullshit that sharpening voids it with Microtech. It's bullshit that disassembly voids it, but they sell their proprietary bits for their faggy ass proprietary screws.

>>33421844
WORKING FINISH:

The Hinderer Knives “Working Finish” is actually a combination of finishes. First the parts are given a sand blasted finish as above. Then, they go over to the huge tumbler for a stonewashed finish. The resulting finish ends up having the mottled surface appearance of the stonewash with the more matte finish of the sandblasted. For those that want a finish that does not show wear easily, and is not quite as reflective as a normal stonewash, this is a good choice. It is not quite as smooth to the touch as stonwashed or glass bead blasted, but is not as rough as the sand blasted.

The stop pin rests on titanium on both sides so I don't know what you're sperging about unless you're confusing them with striders, which do actually only have ti on the lock side.

The ZT hinderer designs aren't bad but they've obviously had to make multiple compromises in order to pump them out in volume at a lower price. I'd pick up a 0392 if one came my way.

Benchmade considers sharpening break of warranty? I doubt that, if so, fuck them. I know they are against taking their knives apart, but sharpening is ridiculous.

You think you can get the same results as a guided system ehhh? Considering you had to ask about a factory sharpening service, I kind fucking doubt. Yeah with a few years of practice. To emulate my set up a Wicked Edge, get the results I get (after using it for 5 years), you would need at lest 5 or so years of pretty intensive free hand practice, and at lest $300 of stones (buying new).

But hey if you think you can get the results of pic related with your unexpired hands on your old stones, more power to you, I look forward to seeing some pics.

As for serious sharpening advice: Yeah free hand burr to burr sharpening at like 300ish grit at 15-18ish degrees (DPS), polish as much as you want, and micro bevel at 20 degrees with Spyderco Sharpmaker, this is an easy way to get hair popping edges with little practice and pretty cheap. I did this for years before I got my WE set up.

Okay looking forward to your pictures.
And what kind of razor are we talking about? The common understanding of one, i.e. a rusty utility razor? Or a properly sharp fresh one? Or how about straight razor sharp, the kind that can whittle hair and cut free standing phone book paper?

Yeah nearly anyone can get a sharp, work edge, with very little practice. But to achieve proper sharpness, non the less on higher wear resistant steels, this takes a lot more practice than a few hours. And good luck properly sharpening a dull knife with a 3000 stone, you can microbevel, but you aren't resetting an edge with that.

You are the one talking about being so shit at sharpening you are worried about voiding a warranty. Idk what you are even trying to argue, if sharpening is so easy, why are you asking about factory sharpening services? If you are the samefag as >>33427032

I'm talking about a .5 micron edge, as examined under a scanning electron microscope. As sharp as a knife can practically be.

>And good luck properly sharpening a dull knife with a 3000 stone, you can microbevel, but you aren't resetting an edge with that.
You reset an edge with a mill file.

I'm not that guy. I learned how to sharpen a knife by reading the reports of a material science professor that conducted experiments on the matter. I'm supremely confident in my ability to sharpen a knife.

Simply put, with stones less than 3000 grit, you might as well use a file. With stones more than 3000, you might as well be stropping. With the stone and the strop, more than a half dozen passes is just masturbation.

Been thinking about getting one for years. I'm a big fan of Schempp's work. The Rock is one of the few mid-large production fixed blades that comes with a thinner geometry.

What hold's me back is I'm not sure if it will have the kind of mass I like, even with a proper geometry, at lest some forward balance and mass is needed to be an effective chopper.

Would like to hear your opinions on it when you get it.

I understand. I'm okay with framelocks, but I still struggle a little with knives that have asymmetric scales, where one scale thicker than the other so blade is not in direct center. Which is odd because I love the Kershaw Skyline, and it's slightly asymmetric, I think it's because I did not know what asymmetric knives ever were when I got my first Skyline. One thing that always really gets me is how Chris Reeve's knives with polished frames often still have bead blasted lock bars...

The Tuff is my all time favorite folder. I don't even carry it often, but I just love it. Something about Schempp's design, it feels spectacular in hand, and just every detail works so well. He is just amazing at thinking of every detail, the fact that he's been doing it for so many years shows. A lot of people think his knives are ugly, I used to, not I think they are beautiful.

It makes me question if the designer(s) even bothered to hold and use the knife after the first prototype. Most knife makers will make many iterations of their knives, and do extensive testing on each one, before they settle on the final design that will make it to market.

This is the difference between a $15 MTech and a $40 Kershaw. One was designed to look cool, the other was designed to be functional before looking cool. And a good designer can make a good looking knife that is highly functional, this kind of Design Elegance is one of the main reasons I'm into knives. One of the reason Gavko and Schempp are some of my favorite designers.

>glass breaker (probably mild steel)
>serrations
>one sided thumb stud
>non reversible flimsy looking tip down clip
>bad anodizing (already chipped)
>sharp liner lock
>over complicated handle molding
>Attractions ergonomics (pic related).

Not looking good... For supper cheap an Opinel or Kershaw OSO Sweet will give better performance and a longer use life.

That thing is not a flipper?
>>
>>33431798
Looks like a flipper, I'm pointing out that like half inch of space in between that choil and blade.
>>
>>33431855
It looks tacticool, this could be done to give more reach.

It's done because it's cheap to mass produce and takes less effort to properly design, the whole thing is very tacticool in the most vulgar sense of the word.

Let's reference another tacticool knife, but that has a good design. The Cold Steel AK-47.

It, like many other Cold Steels, also has a large space between the edge and the handle, but notice how they use this as a very defined guard to prevent a hand from sliding forward. The handle still achieves the angular look, while still being designed for a human hand.

Holy fuck, he wrote all of that shit and in the process really just said you should just buy a fucking Mora,leatherman,RAT-1 or any goddammit knife between $30 and $150 since nothing but utility matters. It hurt to read the part about his knives being present for operations where the knives themselves did fuck all.

If the knife is just a tool, why charge so damn much when you can get a nicer tool for the same money that'll do the same thing, or 10 other tools that work just as well without appealing to the image he's selling
>>
say i want to reprofile some knives. what grit sandpaper do i need to remove material?
>>
>>33435015
1xx grit should be fine. Depends on the steel too though. Certain steels require harder abrasives to sharpen then such as diamond.
>>
>>33435038
just chink 8cr

My dad gave me this quite a while ago and I haven't ever seen another sak with the swiss coat of arms instead of either the wenger or victorinox logo. It's got the victorinox stamp on the blade and feels quality, is it fake?
>>
>>33409646
>>33435011

Yeah, if that's the case Emerson has no market. I mean, I can buy ZT for fit and finish or buy a Coldsteel for utility that would also be cheaper.
>>
>>33435860
show off the can opener. im 90% sure thats a wenger, which is another smaller brand of SAK that got bought by victorinox in the 90s

The Bowie is an Ontario SP-10, very nice considering the price, but it's a work in progress, came with a stupidly thick edge.

I'm actually not familiar with the term "duck knife", so not sure which knife you are referring to.

I assure you I'm not Hunter. If you've been around a while you may have seen him and I argue before.

your evidence? Other than being on 4chan. Unless you are the guy who is too afraid to void the warranty of your Benchmade, despite being an absolute top grade sharpening expert who is far superior to a lonely guided system peasant like me.

The green one with the finger groves? It's a CRKT Minimalist Bowie. It's a great little neck knife, I was surprised how comfortable it is despite me larger hands. I carry it a lot when I'm /out with a larger knife. They aren't that expensive, worth picking one up if you are in the market for a neck knife.

And for reference the one next to it in pic related is a Gavko EDC.

So, /k/, when I was a teenager someone borrowed me a book about "barateria", old spanish techniches about fighting with knifes.

Since then I havent found anything regarding that and the book was pretty old too, about 100 years old. So, can anyone help me with that? does someone knows anything about barateria?

I only have a photo of my kitchen knifes right now.

He must be talking about touch up sharpening. Full regrinds can take thousands of strokes if you're having to remove a lot of material. I don't count strokes, but time on the stone can give a pretty accurate estimate. I did three blades this weekend. One took a couple hundred on a 700 grit JIS stone to regrind, and it could use a couple hundred more to make the edge perfect again. I settled for good enough to perform, but with a little belly where there shouldn't be and a less than stellar tip, as well as some left over scoring from where someone completely messed it up on a very rough belt.

Why are daggers so aesthetically pleasing /k/?

The amount of hate on Namefag right now is crazy. All he does is post his knives, talk about his collection, and show off edges. Don't think all the negativity directed towards him is warranted. Yeah he was a bit douchy about the sharpening thing, but it can't be denied he has knowledge on sharpening.

I used to a lot, not as much any more. There are a lot of good knife people on YouTube, I learned a lot from them, and even bought and sold knives to some of them. I used to watch at lest 30 or 40 blade channels... right now only a handful, I'm particularly found Nick Shabazz right now, I think he's a funny guy.

>>33442740
Pretty much what >>33443004 said. One of the coolest looking knives in my opinion is the Extrema Ratio Suppressor. I don't own one, they are just too expensive for me to justify.

>>33442968
It's mostly just one or two samefags... I don't really care. I'll admit I was pretty douchy up there, but it was intentional, I was just returning what I was getting. I'll never claim to be an expert (at lest any year soon), and with that mindset, it really bugs me when I see people who have clear gaps in knowledge about a subject crapping on advice given to them as if they are an expert. It's the Kruger effect thing.
>>
>>33431901

In the case of Cold Steel, it gives more reach without having more blade.

You can carry those in places where it's illegal to carry a longer knife and you still have the extra reach
