can't afford/justify $15,000 plus for a gun that is my $800 rifle just with a few deleted machining operations undeleted. Literally do it in your garage tier. I could use a giggle switch, and I'm all about that short controlled burst, and I'd like to have full auto AR-15's, compact AKS-74 and FAL, but I can't afford or really justify tens of thousands for what should be around one thousand. If I held onto it for a few years I could sell it and make what I payed back in spades, but I want a rifle to be practical and beatable, which I couldn't bring myself to do with a rifle that costs more than my car.

On most guns it's just a different fcg, you could beat the receiver to shit and just switch it out to another.

I do know a guy, he's a real survivalist type. He owns a few full auto AKs (all perfectly legally afaik) with lots of drum mags. When 'the lights go out' as he puts it, he plans to set them up in guard posts or some shit and use them as emplaced guns in his compound.

No. The receiver is the serialized part on most automatic guns save for HK stamped roller locks with semi auto shelves and registered drop in trigger groups or drop in auto sears.

AR-15 needs to be milled, drilled and reamed to take an auto sear, AK needs drilling and reaming to take an auto sear, and usually a notch for the selector position etched into the receiver and the FAL needs a milled or "sear cut" ejector block put in place, a safety sear and a Type A selector to go full auto. There is no drop-in sear for an FAL, putting an M-16 FCG in an AR-15 receiver is illegal unless you have a drop in auto-sear, drilling an AR-15 to take a factory sear is ALSO illegal, and lightning links are mythical, along with the drop in auto sear for AK's. Basically it's HK trigger pack or investment portfolio. There is no in between except for MAYBE a flemming sear if you wanted a full auto AUG.

Completely wrong. As long as you don't have the sear in it the ATF does not care how many other FA parts are in the AR.

Because maintaining proficency with a M1917 and it's indirect fire capability was both tiring, and consumptive of ammo.

When I went to an AR-18, I still found that I was going through an absurd amount of ammo.

Don't get me wrong, civvy FA should be open and unrestricted, but really, you'll get tired of it eventually, and go back to hole punching.

Even the mathfags into the whole wonderful, beautiful science of indirect fire tables with a M1917 will get bored eventually (as I did).

Pray for the BATF to go away so you can experiment, and push the envelope.

Sidenote, I tried to stick a 3 position safety and a burst trigger pack into my AR. It would fire on the first trigger pull, and the release, and the next trigger pull, but not the next release.

Unless I moved the safety to third position, in which case it worked like an AR on semi.

I have since removed any fancy shit from my gun and left it vanilla.

His Olympic arms AR-15 had an M-16 FCG in it with no auto sear, drop in or otherwise. anyway, he lent it to someone who was considering buying it, he put 800 rounds through it, flipped the switch to auto, and then fired two rounds before jamming on the third. They found evidence that he'd bought M-16 fire control parts and charged him with crimes of transfer and possession of an unregistered machinegun. He was convicted.
