My biggest fear is coming home to find someone I love harmed. Someone I care about hurt and me unable to do anything because I'm not able to defend them or let them speak their mind or leave them without substance in their life. In 2009 I came across a car accident that I called in as I parked and approached the two vehicles. The striking car who had t-boned another, a jaguar, was DOA and the two occupants were deceased. All I could do was sit with the woman who I later learned was paralyzed and comfort her. I assured her that the other car was fine and that she would be back on her feet in a few weeks. It took 40 minutes for emt and another 15-20 minutes for fire to show up to remove her from the car.

I'll never stop thinking about how she was so worried about the other people; who had hit her almost oncoming and left her crippled. That's how you know how someone really reacts. That's how you know what real fear is.

Knowing you cant do anything about it but sticking through it.

That's what went wrong. You're not responsible for their safety, police are not responsible for their safety. Only one responsible for their own safety is that person alone (Yeah you can protect kids to a degree, kids tend to make stupid choices)

Wife asks me why I started teaching my kids (Twins) at the age of 5 (Now 11), how to shoot, shortly after that they were enrolled in martial arts too. It's cause I won't always be there, even if I am there, shit can go wrong and I won't be able to do anything. So they need to learn how to be able to protect themselves in life. I don't expect them to be John Wick, I expect them to be able to defend themselves against the avg dindu. Also them taking up Martial arts, really helps burn energy, they slept much easier when younger.

It's a scary thought knowing that you can leave your house for work, a min later some one can break in and murders your family. That's why you get every one on the same page and try your best to drill important shit into their heads.

Like my wife always left the front door unlocked, after the neighbour's house got broken into, she stopped doing that very fast. She also got her conceal permit, carries pretty much all the time now (Legit carry, none of that purse carry shit.) She will ask to go to the range pretty often too, cause she knows the importance in training.

The car accident shit is scary. A yr ago I seen a semi trailer tip, it landed on this small truck next to it, killed the two ppl in it. Though there is not a damn thing you can do in that situation, still smart to carry first aid and be trained in it. You might be the first one on scene, while on the phone with 911 you can at least stop any major bleeding if you got tourniquets, quick clots, etc. Plz only use that shit if you're trained, make sure to get it from a reputable source, specially on the tourniquets, so many fake ones that rip apart so easy.

I try. Made me wish I listen to my father when I was younger. At that age, I failed to see that he was telling me stuff for a reason , cause he himself went through it, or knew some one who did, wanted nothing more to protect me from such things, same time give me a heads up so if I was ever in that situation, that I'd have at least better knowledge than some one who never had things told to them, or never read up on other ppl experiences. Its one reason I encourage my kids to study history so much.

Ive got a car accident story from about 4 years ago that my parents saw (I wont greentext though)

Mom and dad taking sister and her bf back to college since he went to Purdue and she went to IU. Going down i65 and gets a little tricky by Purdue, van loses controls and rolls several times, of course being a nurse for 20 years at this point my Mom jumps out and starts doing as much first repsonder shit as she can, dad is trying to keep the people awake since rolling your car and bleeding isnt good for your health. Sister calls police emts etc. 2 doctors show up too at some point, EMTs show up people turn out to be fine just a little fucked up. Dad starts talking to the State Trooper that shows up turns out its like the 5th or 6th accident in a few weeks. Parents come home about 6 hours later tell me all this
Fucked my Mom up for weeks, like she couldnt sleep at all and she's a nurse and has seem some crazy shit in her time
During all this I was at home playing lego batman 2 since my dads truck only sits 4

I was super little kid coming back from dentist come to the intersection a few blocks from home, see car accident and the cops start bringing out white tarp, mom tells us not to look and keep driving. Fast forward to 2 years ago taking drivers ed. Turns out the girl killed in the accident was really good friends with the instructor
Told us the story
She was in an Suv with her friends and went to make a left turn (no arrow just green) dude coming up in the right oncoming lane trying to make the light, slammed into the car and rolled it, went into a discussion about how you should be careful turning when in an SUV
Scared me shitless because the car I was getting was my grandpas and then my moms 96 Jimmy, to this day Im still nervous about making lefts.

I've been saying for years that a lot of accidents could be prevented if opposing left turn lanes were offset by a few feet to the left. Even 3 feet on each turn lane would be enough for vehicles to see oncoming traffic past the opposite turn lane. Coupled with a speed reduction near intersections (40 to 30 or something) and slightly longer yellow lights, people wouldn't play chicken with traffic when trying to turn left without a green arrow.

It's fucked though. SUVs take forever to turn and too many people misjudge oncoming car speeds, plus people frequently gun it through and intersection. I had to swerve and slam on my breaks to avoid hitting a truck that started to turn left, but then stopped in the middle of the intersection when he saw me at the last second.

I'm used to relying on myself to get myself out of what problems I might have.
