The fact that the Thompson was heavy is a drawback though, and the fact that it's very expensive and takes a long time to make is another, the Marines found themselves with a shortage of subguns because Auto Ordnance (and all the other companies) were busy filling orders for the army.
The Marines had two options, fuckall for subguns, or buying Reisings to serve as a stopgap (and I'm sure you're aware of the Reising's shortcomings).

The Greasegun was a great step in the right direction (even though I'd argue that perhaps they were a bit TOO simple in some regards). It was lighter, it was much cheaper, but more importantly, they took a lot less time to make.

I'll give the M1A1 some points though, it saw some proper simplification and changes that made it better than the 1928, as opposed to the BAR which had a bunch of dumb changes and useless shit tacked onto it for WW2 as "upgrades".
