Is this stuff actually good or is it just a sad compromise to save money?
>>
>>33364320
In my experience it's shit. Basically wolf tier with a brass case.
>>
>>33364337
Not OP, but if you're doing your own loading is it better or is the bullet itself inherently shit?

Which 5.56 NATO load does /k/ prefer? There's some cheap m193 and m855 in my area that I'm considering snapping up. I have rifles with 1/8 and 1/9 twist barrels.
>>
cartridge is fine.

you aren't going get good accuracy and precesion from 5.56 until you go 75/77 grain ammo.
>>
>>33364320
good for long barrels when you are shooting slavs with body armor. Also plinking
>>
>>33364570
M193. 20" barrel. 1/9 twist.
Perfect.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/03/foghorn/the-truth-about-m855-5-56-nato-ammunition/

I'd read this to start. From what I've gathered m855 works as intended (AS FUCKING INTENDED) in a 20" barrel. But it looses all its desirable characteristics the minute you put it in a <20" barrel gun.

>light barrier penetration
>flatter trajectory
>doesn't loose velocity as fast due or more inertia or some shit from the increased weight, causing it to maintain minimum desired energy at 50-150 meters greater than the m193 or some shit.

This "minimum" desired energy was first tested with the steel helmet test thing but can also be viewed as a number by calculating energy at a given range. The m193 does have better expansion/fragmentation and all the typical characteristics that make a round more "lethal". So if a flatter trajectory and light barrier penetration and maintaining of velocity at longer distance is what you want for whatever reason AND you have the 20" barrel to do it... I'd go m855, other than that m193 seams the way to go.

2 MOA doesn't qualify as an accurate round.

its fine for a service rifle, unless you're the swiss.

at least it isn't the israeli 5 moa bullpup

I fingered a tavor yesterday at a LGS...nice size but still went down the the aR pistol build as the accuracy was .8 moa with 77 gr this...

There is no reason, as a civilian, to use the SS109 bullet. It's really mediocre.

ALL 5.56 that is FMJ WILL NOT fragment under 2700fps. M855 is pretty accurate for military ball ammo.

what about xm193?

They can cut through an entire school of children, babies, nuns, and innocent blacks in one round.
One round kills 300 people because the green tip makes it extra deadly in high impact assault machine guns.

>all 5.56 uses a 55 gr m193 loading

Its like they cant design different bullets to fragment at lower velocities at longer ranges

>77 gr tmk
>70 gr tsx

None of those are FMJs, though.

77 grain 5.56 like the Mk262 Mod 1 stops fragmenting at about 2300 FPS. The minimum fragmentation velocity for M855A1 isn't known but it will also fragment at 2300 FPS.

Video of the M855A1 fragmenting at 2300 FPS:

M855 is good if you are shooting at people who are hiding and trying to shoot you.

It penetrates and the steel core ricochets with lethal effect.
>>
Personally, if I'm shooting for practice, I don't see the point in spending any more than I have to, so I just shoot steel. Wolf Polyfomance is consistently cheap, I've never had any problems with it, it's not really any dirtier than brass IME, and it's about as accurate as whatever cheap brass plinking ammo you use.

If I shot competition, I might spring for something more pricey, but I don't have an AR to take advantage of much better ammo desu. Handguard isn't free floated.

"Serious use" ammo is a different story, and there is no reason to load anything other than quality defensive ammunition for this purpose. You can routinely find good deals on 64gr Gold Dot, a proven defensive round by a reputable manufacturer. I bought enough to fill the mag in my rifle and the 6 mags in my chest rig.

I bought 1k rounds of green tip right when i bought my rifle because I didn't really know any better. I still have ~500rd of it. I will not replenish that stock when it's spent. I'm basically Wolf & Gold Dot from here in out, until I own a rifle that can take advantage of more accurate ammo. Even then, I'll probably use mostly Wolf.
>>
>>33365878
The point is that POI is different with various ammo.

If you plan on engaging man sized targets within 50yds it doesn't matter but if you are going beyond that you need to zero with and keep shooting the same ammo.
>>
>>33364532
I've never handloaded with the bullet. There are plenty of better ones out there. You might be able to gain some accuracy by separating them into lots.
>>
>>33364320
ALL 223 is a sad compromise to save money.
>>
>>33366263
This isn't far from the truth.
>>
>>33364320
>Are you attempting to penetrate Cold War era Russian helmets at ranges of 400-600 meters with an M249?
If not, m193 outperforms it in every situation.

M855A1 is not FMJ for anyone besides Jewish lawyers in DoD.
>>
>>33365878
Same. Wolf erryday. Also bought M855 cause I didn't know any better lmao

OP, M855 is the reason why people think 5.56 sucks. It's designed to penetrate. Therefore it zips right through someone's body long before it has the opportunity to fragment or tumble. Paul Howe recalls shooting skinnies in Somalia six or more times before they went down. Any hollow point / open tip match round will be light years ahead of M855 as far as terminal performance.
