Again, the volume of fire doesn't matter because the ratio of barrel changes stays the same. You're complaining about a new barrel after every $4,000 spent on ammo. If you're going through $16,000 in ammo per year, than four barrel changes is nothing. It ESPECIALLY doesn't matter to precision shooters with disposable income.

.308's barrel life is only economical if you're shooting exclusively match ammo, because once you start blowing a .308 barrel out with 50 cent blaster crap ammo, then a new $300 barrel every 5,000 rounds becomes comparatively more expensive.
.308 cheap ammo $300 barrel per $2,500 ammo
.6.5 match ammo $300 barrel per $4,000 ammo

You see? More money spent on ammo before barrel change is better.

Just remember that most of this talk centers around national level competition which is expensive in any sport. Shooting is only part of the equation; travel costs, hotels, etc can cost you more than barrels and ammo in a season.

You don't have to be shooting the super slippery 6 and 6.5 pills at match limit speeds to buck the most wind if you just want to participate in local or regional matches though.

Guys show up at ours with 223 (usually off the shelf ARs at that). Sure once they get past 600 they usually don't fair too well, but they got to come out and have fun.

Totally possible, between the UBR and VTAC I've got a minimum of probably 230-250, and if I bother to strip the paint it shouldn't be hard to drop a barreled upper on someone for at least 200. A free, complete lower with some magpul upgrades and a 50% gucci bcg/ch isn't too bad in my book

Looking to build a lightweight AR (under 6 pounds), with plans on SBR'ing it when I'm back in the states. I plan on a 10.5" barrel.

I'm building it over a year so I can spend a bit more than I would if I were buying up front or building over a short period of time. What companies make decent lightweight parts? Right now I've got an Aero Precision lower and Anderson Arms stripped upper.

Any advice on putting together a lightweight build?
