I want to get a Ruger American in .22 rimfire, mainly because it has irons. I've never owned a gun before and I basically just want it for plinking, and don't want to spend hundreds on an optic if I'm just gonna be shooting melons. Does anybody have any experience with the Ruger American? Are there any .22 bolt rifles you would consider to be better than it?
I'm in the Ruger vs Savage conundrum myself. I like Ruger, but Savage makes good rimfires and are usually 2/3 price of the Ruger American.

They are good guns. As a alternative, the 10/22 is the obvious suggestion, but if you want a bolt gun I would look at a CZ 455. They have a bunch of models.
Also you don't need to spend hundreds on a optic for a .22, any scope from a decent company around 50-100 bucks would be fine for the ranges that .22 is good for.
i like mine, nice having 10/22 mag compatibility and its fucking tack driver accurate.

wait why the hell does the ruger American 22 have irons but the other calibers don't? I was thinking of getting a 223 american

There are plenty of better bolt action 22s, but not very many in that price range.
The Ruger American Rimfire is fine for what it is

Having back up irons is very appealing to me and seems like a wise idea in the rare but possible tragedy of optics breaking.
Get a Ruger American .22 bolt action with irons, sure but just save up fifty bucks a pay period to put towards a Leopold rimfire scope I think it's under 300 bucks.
I myself have three Ruger 10/22's including a long barreled one...I don't really need a bolt action...but it used the same magazines...eh why not. though I wish there was a stainless version to match my 10/22's

Like what he said, it will provide decent enough accuracy for plinking and hunting tree rats and tunnel rats.
If you want Olympic level accuracy then look elsewhere.

>tunnel rats
fucking gooks
is it stupid to think about putting canted irons on a ruger American?
Check out the Marlin XT-22 series. Pretty new on the market, supposedly has a better copy of Savage's Accutrigger.

I like mine a lot. Very accurate, and it's nice that I can share mags with my 10/22. It's a very good rifle for the price.
