Dude is an EMT in a major city. Gets a call about a possible officer down, shots fired, etc. Is very close to location, arrives within ten minutes.

He's presented with an instant PTSD causing scene. There's an 18 y/o kid laying on the front lawn, trying to scream. Shot in the throat, slowly suffocating/bleeding everywhere. Somehow still alive, death grip on throat.

The cops had booted the door without announcing who they were, kid got his dads gun because he thought it was a robbery. One officer got shot in the leg.

He realized the officer was going to be fine, so he immediately tried to save this kid.

Cop hauled him off, told him to stay back. Says suspect might still have a weapon. Huge argument ensues, EMT-bro said he was about to attack the cop.

EMT removes cop, books it across the lawn. Got their in just enough time to see this kid look right at him and then pass away.

EMT bro lost his fucking mind, went into the ambulance and just broke down. Was no good until another ambulance arrived, guy who got legged was taken care of.

Less than a year later, he attempted suicide. He's going better now, but you can tell he's still fucked over that.

Except thats not true. Typically it is the case, but EMTs are actually allowed to call time of death if they are dealing with a person who has a "condition that is incompatible with life". For example, someone who crashed their crotch rocket and dumped a pound or two of their brains across the roadway and is going through agonal breathing. Perhaps not while they are still breathing - but yeah brains smashed out is pretty cut and dry "incompatible with life" material.

So like someone shot through the head and pouring thick slop out their forehead technically would require a doctor to call TOD. On the other end a skull split open like a melon and now empty would be one of the few situations an EMT would have that authority.

They just have to contact medical direction to do so in most states.

Something as simple and non-descriptive as "abdominal pain" qualifies as a medical diagnosis, which can be made by even an EMT.

Very very late to this but not anything that's going to kill you. People have died in it just like any other training but you get extensively screened before going into it. If they think shoving you in the water drum will make your heart give out or something you either won't be allowed in or they won't do it to you. It's a very organized system but none of it registers in your mind because the instructors do a good job.

When you sign the paper it's right there that they're not responsible for any injuries you receive in it. In the harder/sf ones they break bones, usually only a pinky finger or something though. It's always administered by a medical professional but you aren't going to notice it. In basic SERE you'll get slapped around a lot, punched, kicked, usually cattle prodded, stress positioned etc but again not enough to seriously injure you. I don't know how often or even if they still do waterboarding since I took mine in 97. Most of the torture is psychological with the starvation, sleep deprivation, hard labor, audio loops, contortion into small containers that are also sometimes filled with freezing water. There aren't many specifics you can give out without violating your nda and I don't want to anyway. The entire purpose of SERE is that you don't know what's going to happen to you. Everyone breaks eventually (or manages to escape) so there's no point in worrying about it.
