That's pretty cool. You usually don't think of gasses having momentum, but it makes sense here. If you didn't open the breech at the correct moment, and it remains air tight, then the desired effect of all the gas and other debris from the discharge won't be flushed out, only part of it will escape the barrel.

I almost wonder if this could be scaled down to the size of a personal weapon, would make for easy cleaning... and could allow for more sustained firing without having to do a barrel change (for an LMG), or stop to clean. I'm sure that's already been thought of though.

I'm too lazy to do math on it but I'd say amount of gas is too small to have a substantial effect, especially is it's used on a gas loader or blowback. Furthermore the system would only clean half of the barrel. I don't think it's a useful idea, especially because smoke is not an issue on small arms. Also this >>33344759
