Ulster nationalism was dead in the water when the pro union Loyalists killed off (sometimes quite literally) those who advocated a three state solution. This proved to be probably the smartest thing they ever did, even though they didn't understand it at the time.

Virtually every diehard unionist voted to leave the EU, but there were plenty of unionists who voted to stay in. What a lot of people can't appreciate is that, in the space of about 40 years, the conflict in Northern Ireland had around 3500 killed. It was a fun afternoon in Syria or the Balkans, dragged out. The bulk of the populace have their opinions on it and pick a side but it's not a concern that dominates every political decision.

Yeah, I see that as a major failing of contemporary democracy actually. Basically three things seem to dominate almost all elections worldwide: jobs, education, and healthcare.

This means there is no real room for debate on other areas most of the time, unless it is a very specific socio-cultural issue, like IRA, illegal Mexicans in America, or Kurdish independence in Turkey.

There's no real allowance for people to have their say on broader cultural issues like gun laws, speed limits, drug decriminalisation, etc. The only way is to write letters to your representative, which usually have zero impact if their or their party's political stance is against your own.
