redpill me on .357 lever action rifles
>>
>>33337250
They are fun as fuck.
They are cheap to shoot 38/357
You can shoot them at places that only allow pistol caliber or at targets that can only do pistol caliber.
Can get or make lower power cowboy loads.
Small, handy as fuck.
>>
>>33337279
Also
>hot .357 from a 18inch barrel easily surpases 223 and can get into 30-30 territory

They are lever action rifles chambered in .357.
What else is there to say?

>>
>>33337395

I, for one, am not a fan of tube-fed leverguns without a loading gate.
>>
>>33337358
But 30-30 isn't really anything over a .223
>>
>>33337279

The reasons you listed are exactly why I would get that caliber if/when I decide to get a lever action.

The only real question for me now is brand. Do I get a Marlin or is it worth the extra cash to spring for a Golden Boy?
>>
>>33337413

.30-30, within something like 150 yards, is stronger than 7.62x39. After that, unless you're using those fancy leverevolution rounds or whatever they are called, the ballistics of 7.62x39 allow it to hold onto more energy.
>>
redpill me on .44mag carbines

doesn't .44 mag kick harder than 30-30 but not go as far

>>
>>33337424
I have a rossi 92. I want a side loader to feel like a cowboy though it hurts me sensitive little thumbs.

The range I go to doesn't allow rapid fire of rifles unless they are pistol caliber so this is perfect.
>>
>>33337431
But energy isn't a direct correlation to terminal ballistics

>30-30 is usually somewhere around 1800ftlbs
Who told you that 30-30 wasnt really anything over a 223?
>>33337431
But with 30-30 you get a wide range of .308 caliber hunting bullets with metric tons of R&D behind them. Also you dont really want to shoot at animals beyond 150yards with a leveraction or AK.

http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/44mag.html
http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/44special.html

165 grain .44 Special hits just shy of 800 ft-lbs out of a 17" barrel. More than capable of stopping a fight.

So a 165 grain .44 Mag out of a 15" or 18" barrel gets ~1440 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.

160 grain .30-30 hits ~1900 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.

It'll cost you a hell of a lot less powder to reload, recoil will be a lot softer, you'll have a higher magazine capacity, you can carry more of it and it's easier to find handguns chambered in .44 Magnum/Special than .30-30, though.

>>33337465

The rounds are almost the same in bullet mass and diameter. That means the .30-30 is going faster at the muzzle. It just slows down faster (unless you're using more modern bullet geometries which, while more expensive, are available). Hell, if you're using a Savage 99, you could use the same bullets as your .308 Win rounds without worry of accidentally detonating the rounds in your magazine. Then you'd REALLY be cookin' with gas.

This, 30-30 can't hit a deer at 20 yards, let alone kill it while .223 will blow it up.

And those numbers are with regular factory loadings. Reloading near maxloads, or buying Buffalo Bore will yield pretty incredible results.

https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=102

From a 18.5 inch marlin you get ~1700ftlbs with a 357.

https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=232

Same length barrel and almost 2100ftlbs with 44magnum.
>>
>>33337984
2100ftlbs is nothing compared to the awesome assault power of the 9 mill- I mean 223...

Definitely a good gun to have. Can't think of a better outdoor rifle to carry than a lever action in .357. As long as you're not in Grizzly country, they'll defend you from all four legged and two legged critters.

If I were in Grizzly country, perhaps id want to try a .44mag and up. Though some .357 Hardcasts from Buffalo Bore would sure do the trick as well.

Does anyone make .460 carbines?
>>
>>33338436
big horn does.
but id rather have a .454 lever action rifle, and a .454 ruger super redhawk combo. I hear some .454 lever gats will fit .45 colt. making it the perfect brush combo. But i love my .45 colt lever carbine rifle
>>
>>33338461

You can fire .454 Casull in .460, except it'll likely have a progressive twist.
>>
>>33338468
yes, however .454 is more than enough to take a bear down, and ammo is more available where im at. But .460 is a great cartridge. Just my 0.02
>>
Unless it's threaded for a can they aren't that fun. I wish the factories would get on this shit.
>>
>>33337250
always admired these type of guns...but what are their price ranges for a decent one? or even a just ok one?
>>
>>33338483

All else being equal, I see no reason not to get the one with a broader variety of potential rounds. The fact that .460 requires a progressive twist means you'll get better accuracy with every other round, too, although it'll increase cost a bit.

>>33338485

Depends on the manufacturer. Rossi guns are pretty affordable. It's literally the same company as Taurus, though, so they can be a little rougher than other manufacturers. You get what you pay for, right?
>>
>>33338485
They're actually really cheap compared to pistols.

I bought a Henry Big Boy Steel for 760 new.
>>
>>33338557
and increase the actual size. the Smith and wesson .460 x frame is fuckhueg. id rather have a super redhawk alaskan.
>>
>>33338613

I meant for the carbine, specifically.
>>
>>33338675
my apologies. if a .460 could shoot .454 aswell, and maybe .45 colt (doubt it) id definitely do that rather than just .454 and .45 colt. But if it wouldnt id get a .454/.45 colt lever gat
>>
>>33338694

As long as the lifter and everything is designed with that in mind, yeah.

A couple words of warning on .357/.38 special- the first is that the new Winchester-made 1892s are .357 Magnum only. .38 specials won't feed properly owing to the shorter overall length. Apparently the Chiappa and Rossis don't have this problem, because they have a redesigned lifter (the Winchester uses the original design).

The second thing to watch out for are 1873 designs. The modern toggle link is stronger than the old ones, but they are a weak design in comparison to the 1892. Stick to lower power loads in a 73, so you won't wear it out faster.

1892s are ridiculously tough.
