I have a smith and wesson 642 j frame. The finish is warn off and it looks like hell. The finish doesn't affect the functionality but i would like to refinish it. Is there a way to blue it or buff the old lacquer off and re lacquer it? can i get auto paint and bake it? Should I send it to S & W and pay them 300$ to refinish it? It seems like i could buy a new one for $300 so theres that to. Any experience with this? These are photos of the wear on the frame.

I have that exact gun for about 4 years now. Yours is in a lot worse shape. The only parts of my coating that have worn or be dissolved are the back of the grip and were it rubs against the inside pocket holster.
One of two things is happening
>you are using a corrosive cleaner on the gun that is eating up the finish (likely)
>you somehow have a bad finish
pic related is how wear should look.

my side plate has a few dings but the finish is perfectly fine. I use clp
Common issue. S&W may cover under warranty. They did have an issue for a bit with some finishes flaking really bad.
Some people have done home refinishing with stuff like duracoat.
No personal experience refinishing because the whole point of an inexpensive Airweight is to carry it always and not worry about it.
