Most states don't have a Guard system set up like Texas that pays an additional full college benefits on top of the Post 9/11. For 90%+ people going Guard and Reserve they only get free college if they deploy. And only at 100% if it's for 24 months. 11-12 months only gets you 50%.

You'll have ~$5000 in your bank account when you leave boot and get into AIT. Then when you get out after 3-4 years of active duty you get the Chapter 33/Post 9/11 GI Bill and you get 100% tuition coverage + Basic Allowance for Housing. In even some of the cheapest places to live that's $1500 in your pocket every month just for going to school.

So someone who isn't a dumb dick can go into active duty, put away a nest egg, and then get out and get a free ride to college AND get paid to go to class.

Honestly going through my undergrad program with students significantly younger than myself has shown me I would have been a terrible student and college would have been a terrible experience. Most of these kids don't actually give a shit about what they're studying, they're just checking a box to get a degree so they can work at Starbucks. They don't participate in seminar discussions, don't attend speaking events related to their majors, aren't involved in major related clubs, don't network (mostly because they don't have the life experience to know how to talk to people about a variety of topics) etc. That's not to say that is every single "traditional student" I've met or worked with, plenty were very involved in the program doing undergrad research, internships, extra programs, and attending speaking events. But that's not the majority. And it seems it's usually the younger kids straight out of high school that are in the former category.
