Stolen Valor stories

I know this isn't really weapons related but....

Today, I was in my LGS checking out a deal on 9mm ammo and shooting the shit with one of the employees when this guy comes in.
>Walks in and sighs loud enough for people to turn around and look at him
>Employee asks him after a second with another customer, "Can I help you find anything today?
>This guy looks like fucking Leonard from Big Bang Theory with a buzz cut wearing what looks to me like Navy DBDU
>Starts talking loudly to the other employee saying he needs a plate carrier, 2 bricks of .45 and a Glock 37 in FDE
>Clearly he's looking for respect and a discount
>Employee asks him if he's in the Navy and he says, I kid you not, "No, I'm in the Air Force, I just got back home from SERE School in California and he's back here to go to SERE training at Parris Island"
>.......................................
>I've never been in the military but I know he's full of shit.
>Employee tells him to leave immediately and he's a fucking disgrace

I guess he just bought his uniform and thought he'd take it out for a test drive.
That was my first time seeing Stolen Valor in person and it was sooooooo obvious. How can people be that dumb, he did literally 0 research at all.
Anyone else ever experience stolen valor first hand?

So why do people steal military valor? If you just want people to thank you really easy to steal something like say, fire fighter valor, and have a harder time getting called out for it.

liberals don't get their panties all in a bunch becuase baby killers and what not either.
>>
>>33333163
fire fighter is probably worse honestly, in order to be a fire fighter you have to have EMT training so as soon as you mention it, you're the go to medic if anything happens like old FUDD Steve over in the corner looking a muskets has a heart attack.
>>
>>33333163
People who lie about shit like this tend to not be smart. Even if you said I did two years in Iraq fixing radios probably no one would doubt you. But they always have to say, Yea as a Ensign in the Marines, I had 2 AKs issued and shot Bin Laden, that's how I got my 11th Medal of honor.
>>
>>33333163
they want to pretend that they've done something really hard and they know they can make up bullshit stories because most people won't be able to tell that they're lying.

career firefighters tend to need EMT and even paramedic certs, but the many volunteer fire districts don't even require emergency responder certificate (which is a 2 day course). There are even some states in which volunteers don't even require any sort of training at all.

I know my district trains volunteers to the same minimum as career and is very hard to get into.

I work at a VA hospital, and I have literally never once heard a vet want to be thanked for his service, let alone walk around in his uniform. They just want to go home and not be bothered.

In fact, during orientation, we're specifically told not to ask about or mention their service unless they prompt it, among other things like not assuming their gender or preferred name.

TL;DR: treat vets like normies, because chances are that's all they aspired to be after they got out.
>>
>>33334020
I get that, I've gone to a recovery ward sponsored by Wounded Warriors with my dad a few years ago and most of the guys there wanted to talk about girls and the next big boxing match on pay per view. They spent like 10 minutes talking about how they got injured and I listened but it was more fun to talk about other shit.
>>

This. I cringe every time someone finds out I was in and "thanks" me. I truly appreciate the sentiment, but ugh. These stolen valor faggots infuriate me. I find the SEAL wannabes the funniest. On the other hand, it was always costlier to return home as a Vietnam vet than any other US-related war I can think of. Wearing that uniform on a US street in 1968 could be scarier and more depressing than actually being in the jungle. At least you could understand why the NVA wanted you dead.

I was doing Napoleonic Reenactment, once upon a time. This is a fairly organized activity; you normally join a group and train regularly, and uniforms are normally produced in a number of sets. You can opt to buy a few items elsewhere or make them, and use them as part of your kit, but the standards are strict - both because everyone's a history buff, and because looking like a unit is a high priority goal. As part of this process everyone starts out as a private. People who are reliable and dedicated might get a promotion but this can take many years, because it looks plain stupid to have too many officers and it is unfair for those who deserve a promotion as much as those who actually get one. My unit, which counted only three dozen guys, had one captain and a couple of lieutenants and about as many sergeants. Sounds a lot but a big part of our performance was to do demonstrations of battle with blocks of soldiers marching right and left and each block needed a leader. Maybe once per year we'd go to a camp with a few other groups like that and do slightly bigger events. Great fun, and the few trips we'd do to international events in Leipzig and Waterloo and such were truly epic.

But there was this one guy. He was not part of any unit. Middle aged, maybe late 50s. Very educated on military history, and showed up on events with a tent brimming with high quality gear. Officer gear. And he felt, as he looked the part, that it was his place to take command of our unit. Nope nope nope.

Impersonating and playing dress up aren't the same though. I could dress up as a cop for Halloween and nothing would happen. It's only illegal when I try to arrest someone.
>>
Wearing uniform items by themselves, without any markings, is not a problem - for sane people, anyway. It is when you can potentially pass off as a genuine soldier in service that there is a problem - in my country, a legal one. And wearing medals and rank badges you have not earned is a downright lie. So I'll wear my flecktarn or woodland sets without blinking when going for a forest walk. Or, a camo field jacket if going to get some groceries and the weather is nasty. But people who gear all the way for a mall trip are imo a bit off kilter.
>>
>>33336958
can't help you with that.
>>
>>33336982
the problem is they dress up to go to stores for some type of monetary gain (discounts or free shit), that's whats illegal about it. its just disrespectful to real combat vets to go and wear accommodations when you did nothing at all to earn them.
>>
>>33332161
if they're stupid enough to think they can pull it off successfully, they're too stupid to do research on what they're impersonating first

Fucking this. My dad was in Vietnam and he never talks about it but he has a Vietnam vet plate and a little POW/MIA bumper sticker. I drive a truck and he drives a Honda that gets god-tier gas mileage so whenever I need to haul ass somewhere I trade him the truck for his car and do like 30 over the speed limit. Never been pulled over once for it. Even ran a red light on accident once with a cop right behind me, he sped up to check my plate numbers and then backed off.

Almost makes me want to join the military to get my own veteran license plate. Hands down the best benefit of serving.

No actually quite the opposite. People usually dance around it for a bit like they want to ask, not quite to the point of thanking me, but they'll say something like "you served right?"

I'm pretty clean cut and apparently have a "been there done that" attitude, plus being in the mid 20's and just starting college, many people just assume I was in the military and am going on the GI bill I guess. I don't know why I give off that vibe but it's getting really annoying to have to keep repeating myself saying "no I was not in the military, not sure why you think that." It's weird because compared to every real vet I've ever met I don't act like one, I just chalk it up to young kids in college who don't know any better and assume knowing how to camp and read a map means you served in Afghanistan.

Keep in mind this happens with me just sitting in class with normal clothes and no milsurp on me whatsoever as well. I was in military school for a couple years but that's like saying being in kindergarten is equivalent to a masters in Engineering. It's kind of hard to explain but it only started happening to me when I went to college. Back in my old jobs, even ones where I would use milsurp stuff for some of my backcountry jobs on chainsaw crews and the like, nobody ever seemed to think that.

I dunno, I just feel like it'd be a nice patch to have.
>>
>>33338985
I've been there. I'm mid twenties in college and get that all the time. Even when i was a skinny fag working at Walmart when I was 19 they asked if I had been in the army. I guess it's just the vibe and not looking like a hipster faggot or a frat boy.
>>
I was a k9 handler in the AF and spent time attached to infantry units and have made lifelong friends with my mentally retarded grunts. One guy ill call T was a veteran of both oif/oef wth three combat deployments.

My buddy "T" had a wife he'd been with for at least a decade, she had children from a previous relationship and he adopted them after a while. I know what you're thinking, and no he isn't a cuck or anywhere near one.

Anyhow I would have never expected his wife would cheat. She was super family oriented, seemed to hold T in high regard and genuinely love him. One day T comes home from work and she has his shit packed and tells him to leave or she'll call the cops. She then moves her boyfriend in. T's former in laws didn't approve and still keep in contact with him to let him know what's going on with his kids.

This dude claimed to be a marine and they all believed it. Now it's coming out that he'd never served in any military and has been lying to everyone about his life. We started noticing the classic faker bullshit when he told the in laws he was force recon and can't talk about his time in. Now T's ex is trying to get him back and realized what a pathetic piece of lying shit the new dude is. T has got a new girlfriend who is hot AF and isn't taking the old haggard cheating bitch back.

Why do they always pick the most outlandish jobs and stories? Anyone that says, "I was special forces," I immediately to write off as full of shit. Then I swear they always start with the "classified" bullshit when you ask about deployments etc. They can tell you they were in Iraq and what fobs they've been to if they're for real. most of them are so eager to start lying about shit too. Most the time no one has even mentioned anything about the military and they just start blabbing about ridiculous shit no one believes.

North Korea is like stolen valor practiced on a constitutional level. Not one of these clowns has ever seen a second of combat - probably never even went through any true military training - they just award themselves as many medals as they see fit.

As a current active-duty E3 in USAF, I think Stolen Valor faggots are annoying. Sure the ones actually trying to scam people out of money are wrong and need to be prosecuted.

But the guy who is 400lbs and wearing metal on his cammies isn't fooling anybody and I don't see a need to rat out a guy who can't even convince someone's Grandma at Walmart that he REALLY IS Delta Force Rangers guise!

Now when Stolen Valor really DOES make me rage is the faggots that use fake uniforms and service and then go to official air shows. Then they are walking around a federal installation in uniform lying about a military record and in many cases getting close to aircraft that still have classified components inside.

That is unacceptable. That makes us vulnerable to espionage.

This is why I didn't enlist.

I actually graduated early, and my certificate is supposed to be equivalent to a diploma, but the Army refused to acknowledge it as such. I actually set my recruiting office's all time high score on ASVAB and they offered me a fast track Aviation Warrant Officer path, but said I had to do a few semesters of community college first.

I went and did that, but then I decided I might as well just finish, get my degree, and go in as an officer instead, but my college side job became a career and I ended up dropping out to work in it instead.

Normally yes, but Texas A&M is a Senior Military College with automatic active duty and all the other goodies involved.

Their Corps of Cadets has operated independently from the US Army since the 1870s and as such they make their own rules.

After the first two years the cadets have to make the choice between the military and being a civilian upon graduation, but if they choose to stay civilian they are allowed to continue within the school's Corps of Cadets.

It's weird and there isn't much of a point to it.
They spend four years dressing in a uniform every single day, going to PT every single morning, and getting the everloving shit hazed out of them.
And half of them choose to swerve the military and do it for literally no gain.
>>
>>33343498
Thats weird, thanks for the info
>>
>>33343459
Maybe the Corps is different

But yeah, for NROTC, you either pick up a scholarship by your sophomore year (thus committing), or drop.

Why does no one try impersonate the Air Force?
>>
>>33337188
Those are two seperate crimes, actually. Uttering as genuine is distinct from laying claim to unearned valor decorations. I believe the SVA was overturned by a federal court. But impersonation still carries a prison sentence.

Whoa, he got fat.

Yeah, I remember him. He would dress up as a cop and all kinds of shit, then add lens flares to the muzzles of his fake weapons and pretend they were photos from combat.

I remember his retort after the Stolen Valor Act got knocked down.

>>
fuck your stolen valor witch hunt. i spent four years in and did two tours overseas, 11B the whole time. after i got out i wanted to go snowboarding and the warmest thing i had was my big ass field jacket so i wore that. lo and behold up come a bunch of self-important, sniveling, most likely pogue ass motherfuckers trying to grill me on who i was, what i did, did i have my CAC card, etc.

i have no respect for people who take time out of their day to try to grill other people on stupid shit like wearing a fucking piece of cloth. it's not the cloth that's important, it's the people -- the uniform's just a fucking stupid ass textile, and playing make believe is protected under your first amendment rights. we fought for those too.

go fuck yourselves, """"""""stolen valor"""""""" cucks
>>
You know one thing I never understood. I could almost see people pretending to be someone who completed their 4 year enlistment, wearing some cammies, claiming to have been a lance corporal or something, whatever.

But they always go all the way and pretend they outrank Dwight Eisenhower or some shit
>>
>>33343498
It may seem silly to you, but if it works for some people, what of it?

That structured kind of environment would work pretty well for me, I reckon. I did pretty bad in university, I'm not really self-motivated, but in the workplace I really thrive, even in areas that I'd do poorly by myself. I just find it a lot easier when someone's expectant of me or something.

Manager at my last job served overseas during Gulf War 2 Electric Boogaloo. Got a blown out knee, fucked up spine, and PTSD from it.
He got like 14 kinds of cancer and lost a hundred pounds. Went to some function where he wore his uniform and some dude jumped up his ass about it not fitting correctly and he obviously was a fake and everything.
Dude broke down crying and shit.
I get why it's offensive but man, people don't know when to stop.

There are veterans organizations for almost any unit, special forces/operations, organizations for specific MOS/Ratings (Like the Aviation Boatswains Mate Association or the Air Force Security Police Association, etc.), and so on. My point is that there are many organizations and people you can go to with information about potential and actual phonies and they will gladly help. But ultimately. the best way to find out the truth (usually), is to get as much info as possible and do a records request from the NPRC.

>>
>>33339691

Wouldn't say that. There was quite a bit of combat back when Communist NK was founded. Some really icky battles as well in a short amount of time. So if these old guys were part of these, they could very well have been awarded one medal for each of them and through the glorification of that "independence" war and shit it's somewhat plausible.
>>
I think the vast majority of people who would do "stolen valor" are mentally handicapped. And so the people who get all up in their face with STOLEN VALOR STOLEN VALOR need to back the fuck off.

I think pulling one aside and quietly mentioning, "you know, if you weren't really in the service but are wearing that uniform it's disrespectful to the people who did serve" is plenty.
>>
>>33346973
you know how combat vets can be though. its more than disrespect to claim all those medals when the person confronting you most likely relives a handful or more of their friends dying right next to them. It triggers shit in them and pisses them off.
>>
>>33347074
Honestly, most combat vets I know are the ones least likely to freak out in public like that.

The majority of the guys recording the stolen valor videos are slick sleeve POGs.
>>
>>33347287
most of the videos I've seen, they aren't freaking out, they are just shaming the person fairly calmly
