Looking to get a lever action.

Thinking about a Marlin336 currently. Probably in a 30-30.

Is that a good lever action and round? Mostly just looking for something accurate up to 150 yards. Probably won't be doing much hunting with it, but perhaps a little. Looking around on some forums I guess a lot of people said Marlin wasn't too great up until like two years ago, but they are a lot better now.

Thanks

I mean if you're not hunting then just get a pistol caliber one so you can save your money.
>>
>inb4 "hurr durr obsolete gun just get an AR"

Also the other anon has it right, 30-30 is pretty expensive, so think carefully about that
>>
Pump actions, lever actions and bolt actions are next. Here is the logic path they will follow to ban bolt actions, WW1 had bolt action rifles used. Ergo bolt actions are weapons of war. Just use a bow if you want to hunt. Bows and arrows were used during the Plains Wars and in European wars, bows and arrows are weapons of war. Lever actions were used In the Spanish/American war and WW1, lever actions are weapons of war. That is where it will go.

Alright, I can see that would make since. I thought I'd bring it out once and a while for some smaller game hunting, but it'd make since I guess to not get a caliber for that if it's not a primary purpose.

Should I go for a .357 or .44? I don't own either cartridge right now but I'm guessing the .357 is a decent amount cheaper? Or are they pretty close?
>>
>>33331204
If you want to shoot out to 150 yards, 30-30 is what you'll need. The ammo is actually a bit cheaper than .308 or 30-06, but still much more than 5.56mm/.223.

.357 will be your cheapest centerfire pistol option, but the bullet will lose energy rapidly and drop pretty rapidly after a certain point.

If you really want cheap ammo and are not tied to long range shooting, you can get 22LR lever actions. I have heard nothing but good things about the ones Henry makes. 22 LR will also be much better suited for small game. Even .357 will blow a rabbit/squirrel apart.

Sorry I meant 'smaller' game, like coyotes and hogs that aren't massive. Regardless, that was really helpful. I'll think it over a bit more and look into the Henry's.

Thanks for the advice.

prices for .357 and .44 are about comparable, with .44 being slightly more expensive. check gunbot dot net for prices

>30-30

I can get federal game shok or whatever it's called for like $17/box at bass pro. That's not really bad.
>>
>>33332011
You can get PPU 30-30 for $12 a box. 30-30 being too expensive is a /k/ meme.

Well I can see where you're coming from so I'll amend my statement to "It's expensive for me, a poorfag, and you might be on more stable financial footing so you might not have to worry about it"

>30-30

Compared to slavshit surplus maybe, but when you compare apples to apples (because there never was any milsurp 30-30), the old lever action caliber usually comes out smelling like a rose.

It's consistently among the cheapest calibers to buy commercially, every factory load is accurate, and you can get it at Walmart.

That's a great rifle and round.
I like unscoped Winchester 94s even better for their lighter weight, easy handling and larger field of view, but that's me.

If you're a normal person who likes ease in mounting a scope, wide availability and reasonable cost, you'll like the newer 336 more.
>>
>>33333004
I agree. I originally wanted a Winchester 94, but since Winchester hasn't made any for a while, they're like $400 more than the 336's.
>>
>>33333065
They still make them now, and they're great. It's just they're made in Japan by Miroku and cost $1200, vs 500 for a 336.

Ausfag here. Bought a Marlin 336 a month ago and still waiting for the useless government to let me collect from the store. Should be any day now, cant wait.

I'm gonna see how i go with the iron sights but I've heard the factor ones are shit. Thinking a red dot would be good for pig hunting

I like my Winchester 94 more than my 336.

.45-70 Government, the last government you can trust. A joy to reload. Run them light as plinkers, or hot and they shoot at a range very accurately.

I gave the 336 to my brother for his 16th birthday but I can take pictures of the 94. Anything in particular you want?

I bought a 336w over the summer. It's my first gun. There are many things I really like about it - I like the cowboy aesthetic, the recoil feels pretty good, I like that it's loud as fuck. It feels good just to hold it, and I never plan on selling that gun. Ever.

But I've had to repair a couple of things several times. I immediately had to replace the ejector, and the screw that holds the forearm between the mag and the barrel broke three times. None of this was expensive, and I'm probably making it difficult because I refuse to send in the gun for anything that small - because being my first gun I want to learn the ins and outs, but the flaws really do annoy me when I've had to fix something.

No gun lasts forever, and every tool requires proper care and maintenance. And I'm not saying that I wouldn't still buy the gun - I got it at a good price. But to my understanding, Marlin's quality took a dive after Remington bought them, and while things have (or so I'm told) gotten much better, there are still problems.

I had a revolver that my grandpa left me when he kicked it, but it got stolen when I lived in the ghetto and got robbed. I don't really care so much about the guns functionality, I just want one that looks like the one I had. It looked like one of the revolvers from the spaghetti westerns.

pic related as far as the style
