So, I've noticed that a lot of military/police dogs are German Shepherds. Why is that? What makes them such good options? Is there a better candidate for military service dogs?
>>
>>33330907
Highly intelligent, as far as dogs go, and fairly high energy. Plus they enjoy being given tasks. Belgian malinois are also used, they're basically a german shepherd with shorter hair.

I should get one of those. What's the logistics of getting an operator dog?
>>
>>33330907
Police/Military dogs need to be of a certain size to be able to attack and knock people down, they need to be able to take commands well, they need to be able to go into water, they need to be trainable, etc et al.

There are certain breeds that fit well. German Shepherds fit and most military dogs today are actually Belgian Malinios.

>>
>>33331069
well, the germans tried to jihad-dog russian tanks on the eastern front using german shepherds that would run under the tank with an explosive vest and explode, but they forgot some things:
>dogs do not like the noises a tank, and in general a war, makes
>dogs will not assume who the enemy is
>dogs will do exactly what you train them
>if you train them on your tanks, they will blow up your tanks
it wasn't exactly successful.
>>
>>33331000
I took my GSD to a protection training evaluation. I had to wait 3 hours before our turn and saw 15 other doges in various states of training. The Malinois were the best at it. The traits that make a good operator dog do not exactly lend themselves to good pets imo.

Imagine if Conor McGregor on steroids was a tweaker and had gone two days without a fix. That's the state most these dogs are in before they work.

Jacked up and good to go

The trainer wanted to work with my girl but it was going to take too many lessons because I trained a lot of her prey drive out when she was small.

If any of you guys wants to get your maligators or gsd in this type of work make sure you start em young and you encourage their prey drive

specifically chasing biting and holding onto something like a rope toy. They have to think that toy is the end all be all of everything. Similar to how a lab thinks of tennis balls.

>>33331173
Not exactly, they managed to rig up the bomb harnesses to quick detach once the bomb was attached to it's target, and the bombs were either timed or remote triggered(I forget which)to give the dogs time to get out of the blast zone. If only because they realized that if the dog allahu ackbared they'd have to spend time training a new dog every time they blew up a tank.

Not all dogs have the right kind or level of drive. The discipline part comes later.

Its so intense for these dogs that many police dogs that are brought out but not get a chance to do their job have to be taken out and trained after because of all the pent up energy and thought.

work work work

If I had more money it's something I would do because its impressive to see in person.
>>
>>33331564
and by training I meant they have to go out and simulate taking someone down.

being out but not getting a chance to work is like us getting blue balls
>>
>>33331372
I worked with five, three in training then two while at my base. I got lucky and stayed with my first dog until he died. Our deployment tempo was really high when I was a handler and it wasn't uncommon for someone to come home and someone else would be deploying would have to pick up his dog because everyone else was deployed and there were only narc/non deployable dogs left on station.

After my dog died I picked up a narc dog and got out a year after. I started having lung problems the military/va attributed to burn pit exposure and can't figure out what is exactly going on with us. Im part of a long term study with the VA and get paid to do nothing.

I'd much rather be deploying with an explosives dog again.

Yeah. On our last fucking deployment too. He was retiring and coming home with me when we got back. Instead we got medevacd to rammstein.

When I got there the vet did his primary exam and told me he was confident he'd be ok. They sent me to a room with a bed because I hadn't slept in 48 hours. About two hours after falling asleep I just heard the knock on the door and knew something was wrong. They asked if I wanted to say bye but they still had him opened up and I couldn't see him like that. I didn't want that to be my last memory of him.

I cried and my homeys I knew at rammstein kennels picked me up with a fifth of Bacardi and I spent three weeks in my hotel room getting drunk waiting for a flight.

I had to haul around my kennel and all of my dog gear through the airports sad as fuck. Drinking to try and keep it numb.

The rapport and bond we have with those dogs is much greater than any civilian has with his dog. It felt like my best friend and brother died.

If this sounds insulting, I didn't mean it to be, but don't underestimate how attached civis can get to their dogs. There are people that have full on funerals for their dogs, people that just sit there like a stone when something bad happens to even their closest human family members, but proceed to absolutely lose it when their dog passes.

My pup comes from a working line, but after being around some actual working dogs, I decided I need a family dog more than operator pup. She prefers being chased over chasing, although she goes nuts for ropes. Despite having most of her prey drive trained out, she still will occasionally show her working heritage.

>Out at grandparent's land with pup
>Coyotes start howling, which is normal, but they were really close this time
>Grab pistol and start walking towards the fence
>Pup instantly recognizes the change of atmosphere (was chatting with my wife at the time) and darts to get between my legs
>She walks with me to the fence line, matching my steps
>I fire a few rounds at shadows across the field
>She doesn't even flinch, even though that's the first time she was around gunfire
>Retreat back to the house and go inside with no further incidents

I've taken her out shooting a couple times now, she has acted perfectly each time.

Yep, mine does too. When we got her as a pup we were living in an apartment complex. The apt had a largish field in the middle with some grills spaced out. We would play around with her, and some local nogs would occasionally come play with her too. She won't really bark at people much, but she loved barking and chasing them around.
>>
>>33332298

Shes my first gsd. The first two years she showed signs of the protection instinct but over the last year it has come out big time. Its always controlled though. It never feels like shes going to snap or anything. If a dog gets a little carried away she generally just puts her paws on their back of their neck and growls very deeply in their ears and it enough.

gsd are very cool dogs

Mine is a pretty useless sheepdog, mostly just derps around looking smiley.

Except when it comes to protecting my truck, or the doors of my house. Then she becomes a rock hard psycho who simply will not tolerate the idea of an intruder. So go ahead, put your hand in my truck. You're going to need more sutures than the average ball gown.

She's a good little critter, but I often think she would be happier working in a prison or something.

nah its not super difficult but does take a commitment. It becomes a sort of lifestyle to a lot of people.

The training center by me has as nice social gathering type atmosphere. They have fire pit people chat around while waiting their turn. the staff very obviously loves dogs and this type of work.

Some of the stuff they do blew my mind. They could get any dog to instantly growl at them pretty much at will. My pup wasnt interested in the trainer at all until he made this weird sound and hand movement then like a switch my dog was like YOU STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY DAD!
it was crazy
>>
>>33332398
The 341st training squadron is the only place to get legit k9 certifications. Civilian PD's have bullshit programs and I'm yet to meet any civilian handler that knows what their talking about.

The USAF runs the entire military working dog program for the DOD. The air force is a bit difficult to become a handler but the army you can join as your mos right off the bat.

I'm the k9 guy from earlier, my little brother is in the army and in k9 school right now. It's just the best way to get recognized and respected certifications.

LOL

I'm the same story. Always had dogs mostly labs. My last lab was by far the best dog I ever had and would (should) have been a working dog. Perfect discipline and hunting dog instincts that I never out to proper use.
My Sophia is the smartest dog I have ever had though. Shes cunning and manipulative. I can teach her just about anything within minutes but she has to think there is a reason for her doing anything. My lab would do things and my positive reaction and a lil tennis ball was all she needed to keep her going. With Sophia...........its more like "fuck you whats in it for me?"

There's no guarantee any of those dogs will be fit for military service. At lackland DTS takes responsibility of them as they're tested for positive attributes. Prey drive is the number one characteristic we look for in an MWD.

They go through their own school then they are shipped to their bases for advanced training and paired up with a handler.

>>33332281
I have a lab that used to bark only at black people. We could never figure out why
>>
>>33332869
My mwd would bark at anyone wearing a haji mandress. Even training at Creech he'd lose his shit if one of the actors we used had middle eastern garb. They know bro, they know.
>>
>>33332840
MWD?
>>
>>33332869
they look different
it's like seeing anything else they're unfamiliar with, it's probably going to make them uneasy until they can sniff it, poke it, walk around it five times, etc.

Out of curiosity, does Lackland only provide dogs for the military? Would a civie be able to purchase one? I'll probably never do it, but I'm still curious

There are fail outs you can get. The dogs that have done their time a handler adopts them. In ten years I've never heard of an mwd not being retired with a handler.

That's actually nice to hear. I like knowing that the service dogs are kept with the people who have a very special bond with them

Don't feel too bad. gsd are like a 9/10 high maintenance girlfriend or a Ducati. People are like ooohh aaaaahh so pretty etc..but at home they are destroying your house and being eternally needy. There is a reason why there are so many gsd rescue groups. Labs are much easier and far less neurotic.

Only experienced dog folk or true blue dog lovers should have them.

A while back before we had to put my dog chopper down, I was sitting in the living room and I started thinking about the fact that in a few short weeks we were going to have to put him down, a wave of sadness rushed over me and before I even started to cry or really make any noise or indicate in any way what I was feeling, both of the dogs in the house got up from across the room, rushed up to me and started licking me in a really affectionate way and they wouldn't stop until I felt better. I've never seen anything like it before. I think they are pretty in touch with what you are feeling, at least on a basic emotional level especially if they know you.

I just have to say as an individual that adopted a Belgian Shepard mutt that they are not for the faint of heart. Smartest dog I've ever met, difficult to train, but she did learn "fuck off" which gave me five minutes of peace before she'd come check if she could hang out. Generally after I cleaned up the mess she'd just made.

You'd be surprised, dogs communicate with each other almost entirely by subtle changes in body language and they will pick up the same changes in humans (we've been co-evolving for millennia, it'd be surprising if they didn't).

Now I'm sad because I don't have a dog. Had them around through most of my childhood but got allergic as soon as I wasn't exposed to them on a daily basis for the first time.

I still have a really easy time communicating with them whenever I meet one and they usually like me instantly.

They were all put down.

The military views mwd's as equipment. Back then it was cheaper to leave the equipment there rather than bring them home.

They're still viewed as equipment but are treated much better than most house pets. What happened in Vietnam is archaic and wouldn't happen today in the military. Private contractors get caught doing horrendous shit all the time and the military gets blamed by retards that have no idea the military had anything to do with those dogs.
