So I have an M1a scout. I know a guy who sells used military surplus optics for cheap so I grabbed an aimpoint comp m4s for cheap and threw it on the forward rail. Works decent withiut a cheek riser but I'm kinda leaning for something with magnification. Had anyone used the burris scout 2-7x on their m1a ? What other optics does /k/ run on their scout ?

....Also battle rifle/ SHTF / your favorite rifle general. Post those beauties. Especially .308s. Shotguns welcome too.

Each had its ups and downs. My scout is lighter than any ar10 I've had.

/k/ isn't that fast moving, you won't need to bump for another 6 hours. Back on topic, I was looking at getting a m1a sometime this spring. What brands should I look at? What barrel length?
>>
>>33329437
What sort of M1 is that? Its ugly but interesting.
>>
>>33329322
I have an early 18" M1A bush, I love its light weight and balance and I don't think I would ever give up that for optics when I have a perfectly good national match front sight. I can hit 8 inch steel plates up to 300 yards away reliably with it.
>>
>>33329437
crop your fucking photo tard. My internet is shit here, and I had to sit through 12 seconds of your bedsheets loading before I saw the gun.

Nice M1 though.
>>
Up here in Canuckistan the M305 (Norinco M1A chinese clone) is extremely popular. You used to be able to get them for $400 (about $550-$600 now). Pretty solid rifles out of the box, but they all have quirks and quality control has been suffering these past few years. Barrel indexing is apparently something that the chinese aren't really familiar with.

One of our major retailers brought in a bunch of former IDF M14 sniper rifle parts kits so their popularity has spiked as of late.
>>
>>33329322
I dont really see the value of a >4x on a scout setup. With that eye relief you will have shit fov out of any optic, especially at 7x.

If I were you I would move the optic to an over receiver mount and put something like a leupold VX-R firedot (1.25-4x) so you can do quick work but still throw some zoom on it further out
>>
>>33329445
There are a few who make them. Springfield (in my opinion ) is the most well known and somewhat expensive. I, myself, and a huge springfield fan. Avoid the socom version, 16" barrell takes too much away from a 308. I love the scout, 18" barrell with a nice muzzle break is just right IMO. Full sized match versions will be your typical m14 variant. They are heavier and 22" barrel. If you want light. Get a composite stock or a surplus fiberglass one. Wood stock for looks. M14 iron sights are amazing but if you want an optic, you will either have to get an aftermarket rail to mount as well as a cheek riser, or make due with something low mounted close to the rail. The factory rail on the scout is ok, some people will say it's shit( probably based on their call of Duty mentality or whatever) but it does get hot as its right on the barrel. You can also build your own m14 with giant parts like you could any ar15 these days. I'd say you can't go wrong with any of then you get. Also, so many gear queers want that EBR chassis- I think it's stupid and just for looks, adds too much weight, and if it isn't done right will make your rifle inaccurate as fuck due to the barrel not being tight enough fit or something. Competition shooters use the full size 22" exclusively , I believe.

I'm sure there is some faggot here that will argue something that I said but whatever.

>>33329479
Has various parts, mostly from Universal Firearms. And you wish it was ugly. That thing is beauty.
>>
>>33329546
I'm on a phone and I don't care that you have to look at other things than the main object. Stop whining. Also.... thanks ;)
>>
>>33329521
Me too but what about at night? Thone irons disappear. And the tritium ones they have are shitty as fuck simply because they are the socom size, aka thicker than NM.

>Avoid the socom version, 16" barrell takes too much away from a 308.
Stop this meme.

18" to 16" is 46.5fps average. Maybe if youre looking at extreme distance shooting that will help but 50fps is pretty irrelevant when you are talking about a sub 20" 308

You should avoid the socom variant for other reasons

I'd take my Opap and grab my p-07 as a sidearm if I have time. I can hit human sized targets with reasonable accuracy inside 200-ish meters with the rifle, it's build like a fucking tank, and 7.62x39 is cheap and will take out man and large animals alike. Animals and the elements would probably be a bigger concern since I plan to go innawoods for Shtf. The Opaps effective range might not be great, but I'd rather break line-of-sight and fuck off rather than fight at extended ranges anyway.
>>
>>33329618
The extra muzzle blast and flash make it not worth it imo. I would rather have an 18" version of any 762 nato rifle.

The socom variant needed an enlarged gas port and tuned gas system to get the dwell time up which required nonstandard parts.

>>33329637
Trust me, I know muzzle blast but if 16" 308 isnt all that bad. If you are rattled by 308 out of a 16" barrel you probably should avoid getting in gunfights.
>>33329650
There are piles upon piles of cases of people having issues with the socom 16". I dont think Springfield put enough work into chopping the rifle that short. Additionally the stupid cluster rail is so heavy you could use it to anchor a boat.
>>33329725
Its 2" not 6". You arent taking a 16" AR down to MK18 length.

>>
>>33329719
Not a bad choice since you would rarely see past 150 innawoods anyway
>>
>>33329736
I have fired 8.5" 5.56 ar's with less muzzle blast and flash blast than the socom
>>
>>33329748
I was deployed in Afghanistan when I got mine and sig gave my entire company discounts so it was about 300 bucks cheaper. It was also about 4-5 years ago. I want to say I paid like 1100 for it. I loved it but it is heavy. Plus whatever optic you want on it. I wish I had one without the quad rail just one make it lighter. Other than that I loved it. Hk iron sights are pretty nice too.

That was my thinking. Though, if I had to stay in an area with a lot of flat space and no wood cover, I'd probably take my PTR even if it's heavier and a little more finicky care wise.

Surplus alum 20 rounders can be had for $2.99-$3.99 a pop online. More locally and at gunshows. I just ordered a pack of 30 and said I was probably good for a long while.

Steel mags and 30 rounders can cost a bit more but still not too crazy. 50 round drums exist and cost a pretty penny.
>>
>>33329883
G3 mags are dirt cheap and you can find them anywhere. There's such a huge surplus of them with no one to buy them that the price of them has stayed nice and low.
>>
>>33329875
Yes, with a linear comp. I would rather have a brake.

I have a PWS on both my scar 17 and my 18" DPMS AR10 and I can see and feel the difference, especially shooting from a blind or covered range.

A good portion of the aluminum G3 mags were unissued and will be in the wrapping from the 1960s in perfect condition. There are handling marks on some but I've yet to come across one that has had "issues".

Now if youre talking about a south african surplus/rhodesian surplus mag you might have to do some work on it
