Actually became friends with someone who used to be in the SA military back in Apartheid days. He knew some of the soldiers who went off to become mercenaries. Sad shit really. SA government is scared of them coming back but has a warrant out for their arrest if they ever do come back.

Damn, I'd have to be a member of JTF2 to even think of doing anything like that. Which is something you don't get into lightly, even if you do have contacts.

I was thinking about the medical, mechanical, experience I'd have to learn in order to get a job with the security forces. Was even thinking about how one could try and acquire those skills in the Canadian military.

As a fellow leaf, I can tell you go Army Medical technician in the RegForce if you want to go that route. If that trade isn't available right now, go reserve Infantry while attending Paramedic School. The second route is probably the best, since that will get you both tactical training and emergency medical training at the same time. Whatever you do, don't go RegForce Infantry right now.

Be prepared to learn Afrikaans, the accents can be quite thick at times and they may not know the english equivalent to some words. At least that was from my experience.

Also learning the language is very valuable. If locals think you're not locally from SA they'll bug you and beg you for money. If you speak Afrikaans most will give up very quickly.

Otherwise you can't go far without someone to help you out with the language.
