I carry a TOPS Karambit.

I live in a rather bleak, nasty area with a lot of white-trash thuggin' home-boys. I've had to pull it a few times.

I don't carry it so much for the actually use, it just gets the message across and looks rather fucking scary.

I just reprofiled a skyline and one of them kershaw emerson collabs for a friend. I just use a lansky and really fixed Kershaw's disgusting edge on the emerson. However I'm still very new to knives and was just kinda wondering, assuming I strop my knives when they start getting a little dull, and only ever sharpen them once or twice a year with the 3 standard stones in my lansky kit, how long will my knives last me? I get hand sharpening is a different beast from using sanders but I'm getting pretty autistic about how much material's being removed.

Try not to worry about steel loss.

One of the best methods for retaining material on your knives is microbevleling. Ideally you would set the initial edge at around 15-17 degrees per side, depending on what kind of materials you cut, you can go thinner (and that will increase edge retention), but a good all around stable angle is 15-17, and strop at a degree thinner. After using the knife for a while, and stropping is no longer yielding a good edge, it's time to microbevel. Using your finest stone, sharpen at .5 to 1 degree thicker than the main bevel and strop one degree thinner than that. Your knife now has a new edge with a microbevel, practically no materiel has been taken off with the micro bevel.

You can re-microbevel at the same angle a few times before moving up another .5 to 1 degree. You don't have to full reset the edge until your Micro bevel is up at like 20-22 degrees.

If you do this right, the blade of a knife can easily last a lifetime of use.

Another thing to consider though, if you are really into the knife hobby, own multiple knives and rotate. Because I like to rotate my knives, any single knife is used far less. I mostly carry one of 6 knives, but I have 20 or so in the full rotation.

Aside from the fact that it would be a good 50 bucks cheaper if it didn't come out of youtube, the jessmuk has the single most comfortable handle I have ever used on a knife, and that's no joke (and i've used quite a few).

The ergonomics on it are simply amazing, the blade profile is really great for slicing, and the angle of it reduces fatigue.

If anything, it's a little bit wide, but you can't have everything.

Whatever you may think of Chris, the knife is simply amazing, and you can't argue with LT's quality.

I've heard about micro beveling but never really bothered to look how it worked. I can see how useful it can be now. Unfortunately the lansky only has a few guide holes and only 3 stones so I can't really do much. At least I reprofiled it to 17 inclusive, and the next would be 20 for the micro bevel. It's not much but at least it slices phonebook paper well.

Does not look to bad, need to work on the tips though, that took me a while to get right as well, keeping the stone flat and not letting it roll when you pass over the point. With enough practice you will get a clean and crisp point, like with pic related.

As for the micro bevel, they are pretty easy to free hand, maybe not a precise, at lest at an entry level, but you could probably do better than 17 to 20. All it takes is a few light passes.

These Kershaws are not bad for practice, not "cheap" but defiantly not expensive. When I got my Wicked Edge four or so years ago, I was dumb enough to try my Spyderco Tuff after only a few knives, it has a slightly rounded tip, I've yet to re do it.

I have one of these as my EDC, chose it specifically for the deep carry clip, which is great. It's a pretty nice knife, though I'm not very hard on it and not sure I'd trust it for anything resembling heavy use, but it dispatches junk mail, boxes, and other light duty stuff with ease.

I decided to take a family photo finally. In it is most my sharpening stuff and my Pelican case. Missing is a few machetes, a sword, most my fixed blades (they are in a little draw right out of frame), my belt sander, and a few random knives.

I'm improving my sharpening set up, so I need to spend less on knives to put more into the sharpening; I still need to get a 3,000 grit water stone (looking at the Naniwa Chorsara 3000) and to upgrade some of my cheaper stones to Naniwas but they are like $60-$150 per. And I'm thinking about getting more DMT diamond plates (on edge of table in front of chair) but they are about $55-$100 per. And I ultimately want to get a Tormek T8 which will be roughly $1,000... And a Pelican 1600 for my Wicked Edge ($150)

That's been on my list a long time too. I just love the stone wash Titanium, carbon fiber, and satin blade look. It goes really well with my pen, which is Ti and CF.

I've really been turned on to satin blades myself lately, all the higher end stuff I like tends to be stonewashed, so it's nice when a premium maker goes with a satin finish that's properly nice.

Not as crazy about the CF-Titanium look, but I'm warming up to it. I really like the Shirogorov Hati and how they milled the CF to look like a seashell, plain carbon fiber just doesn't have a lot going on visually. Marble CF gives me a mad hard on though.

I could buy a 0452 right now, but Vespa makes a pretty decent clone of Sinkevich's original Coordinal that the 0452 is based on; the leaf pattern one, in S35VN I think. Chink shit, but pretty damn nice chink shit.

First make sure all the body screws are tight, then tighten the pivot screw, balance the friction of opening with the centering you want. It maybe that you can't have it centered and be easy to open and have good lock up. If this is the case you may need to take the whole knife apart, lubricate the pivot, and reassemble slightly pushing the frame forward or backward (don't know how else to describe it) to change the centering. Yeah I would say go for it, maybe worth seeing if they have a Better Business rating or something though if you want to be extra careful.

Microtechs seem to be pretty carefully price locked, so most places that do carry them will likely be around the same price.

What one are you looking at? I want to get a double edged Combat Troodon one day... But right now I'm not in the market for a $400 knife I can't even legally carry most the year.

Well it would be no different from sharpening any other knife. If your asking, I assume you are not into sharpening. You are in an odd spot where you only want to sharpen a $15 knife, and a basic full sharpening set up is around $60-$100 buying new.

If you want to go dirt cheap, look up the Work Sharp Field Sharpener, it has everything you need to get a functional edge for $20ish.

If you are willing to spend more, I can not recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker ($60) enough, and with something like a Opinel, that's all you need.For thicker knives you may want a 200-400ish grit stone for rough work to supplement the Sharpmaker.

What ever method you use, make sure to sharpen till you form a burr and both sides. You can find a bunch of YouTube videos explaining this method.

It really depends how much you want to spend, I have well over a grand of equipment for sharpening.

Yes the Skyline, get a skyline. As you can see (>>33336414) I am a big fan of the Skylines, one was my first good modern folder 7 years ago.

Also the Kershaw Link is really good, I don't own one (yet) but I've held a few. Kershaw Leek as well. Pretty much any of the American made Kershaws are pretty bullet proof at any price point, the cheaper chines ones can be very hit or miss though. I hear the OSO Sweet is pretty good.

Cold Steel has a lot of fun stuff in the sub $50 range, I just suggest avoiding anything made of 4116. I've had a bad experience with it, and it feels horrible on the sharpening stone. If you can swing $70, the Cold Steel Code4 is one of my favorite EDC knives, even though it's much cheaper than most my others.

The cheaper Spydercos are okay, but I think brands like Cold Steel, CRKT, Kershaw, and Buck have more to offer in this price range. The Byrd line by Spyderco is decent, just don't try to take anything apart, pretty bad screws.

They are good. I got my first one 3 or 4 years ago when with in a month of their release. For me the ultimate one is the Tux Kwaiken, I think it and the Damascus ones are the only ones to use the Titanium frame. The Damascus one is on my list, but in the $200+ range a few ZT's come before it.

*Knife Rant Warning*

Part of it is nostalgia, once again, it's the knife that got me into modern folders 7 years ago. I remember the struggle choosing between it and a medium Voyager, and only having the budget for one.

It's a really great design;
Ergonomics- I have big hands and normal sub 8" folders aren't that comfortable, but the Skyline is.
Blade Geometry- Near perfect for utility, has a very good slicing grind, is good for whittling, and a tip acute enough for digging out splinters.
Action- The flipping is a great example of the classical flipper feel, it does not rocket out like modern ones, it takes it's time like a Hinderer, and it's comfortable to "light switch" and "push button".
Steel- It's fine for a $40 knife, it's easy to sharpen, and it takes a great edge. Not to mention you can get it in different steels if you look around.
Feel- When I handle the premium Skyline (pic related), the BladeHQ exclusive, it has s30v steel and carbon fiber handles, it's about $100. It feels like it's related to my ZT's, it feels like the younger brother of my ZT0562cf.

It does all of this while being made in America for $40 for the base model. That's amazing. More so all the KIA knife companies (Kershaw, ZT, Shun) have amazing customer service. I've had many good experiences with them.

All of that is why I like the Kershaw Skyline, and most of it applies to the Leek and Link as well.

Well my all black one has a glossy finish, I actually don't like it much, but it was one of, it not the first, Kwaiken to have CF.

I would think all the new ones use the kind that's on the Tux Kwaiken, it looks more mate (not fully though) and is a bit more gripy. It's not Textured, just contoured. It's not slippery but not particularly grippy.

I don't find it to be a problem though, and It's one of my most carried knives.

As far as I know all the Ti handled ones are a bead blast finish, which is probably a bit more grippy, probably as much as the G-10 ones.

The problem with buying fakes, ethics aside, is there is a chance you are going to get a shit knife. They say it's D2, they say it's Titainium... They are probably not, and if they are it's probably a crap heat treat (ironically so is the real one), and let's say yours comes with a significant flaw, you think they are going to honor a warranty? Are you going to be able to fix it with it's shit chines screws that strip really easy? Does it have a warranty? For that money you can get a pretty damn good knife from a respectable maker, why bother getting some clone that may fall apart after a year?

Sebenza's are R.I.L (Reeve Integral Lock, aka frame lock). In fact they are THE frame lock, the first knife to make the Frame Lock popular.

For non locking knives; Spyderco makes a few that are specifically UK legal, and if you can get a hand on one GEC (Great Eastern Cutlery) makes a lot of really nice classic slip joints. I'm not supper familiar with non locking knives.

to add to GEC, i have bought quite a few of them, and the best advice i can give you is either go for a farm and field tool, or a smaller sized GEC. just about every single large GEC (4 inches or over, with the texas cattle knife, the 2 blade mako, and a northfield sunfish) i have bought has had some major issue with them, whether its very large gaps in the backsprings, to blade play and blades hitting the inside of the backspring. smaller knives from them, i have not seen it as often. with that being said. the only larger sized knife i could recommend is an older model #23. those things are tanks, and very cheap (<$100 back when they were selling) for their size. easily my favorite GEC

regardless, i starte out traditional, and only just recently started going with more modern folders, and the biggest difference between them is that modern folders are repairable. if your blade starts wobbling, screw it tight. you dont like the handles, put different scales on. the only thing you can do with a traditional knife in terms of fixing it is taking a hammer and hammering the bolsters shut, which sucks balls if youre doing it on an expensive traditional

Nothing made in the USA represents good value for money once imported into the UK. I have a few traditional knives like a victorinox and an opinel. One handed open is an enormous benefit since you often want to cut something you're holding already. There's plenty of disadvantages and no advantages to the little thumbnail notch. I have sanrenmu knives that flick open but their handles tend to be too narrow for anything but a thumb and forefinger grip, hence why I want the sebenza's shape. And personally I think spydeco knives are powerfully ugly.

Also everything I have can be sharpened with the whetstones my razors are honed on, so lots of knives with bizarre edges that try to look like e.g. a miniature kukri I just would never consider.

I dunno it seems a pretty obvious gap in the market to have some better UK-legal options

with that in mind, its very slim, its blade can take an excellent edge, and will hold it for way longer than you would expect from a $30 knife, and maybe their inevitable malfunctioning can give some people an incentive to really not hold back with their knife

Here's my meme collection. So far the ONLY knife that has been shilled and I bought, and was good, has been the KA ABR DOZIER. (And very damn good for the $)

The Opinel #8 fucking sucks, fuck you to everyone that praises it. Even though I clean it, it still gets nasty and tarnished, but it's geometry is perfect for fruit and veggies. But it sits in the drawer. It's retarded as fuck to open. And only got worse with time, and way worse when I applied Gun oil to the hinge spot, and Tru-Oil to the wood.

The Kershaw Shuffle is actually alright, my girlfriend keeps it, likes it, but HATES the bottle opener that digs into your palm. Honestly I love the blade curve and overall tiny geometry. And love the color. So does she.

Then The Mora SS Companion... More of an /out/ shill, definitely. I was so fucking excited, thinking I'm getting some badass Scandinavian piece of magick... but no, my paring knives from Target and Bed Bath & Beyond are almost as good.... The plastic/ rubber just irks the shit out of me. The blade FLEXES inside the handle. So much for that bear grylls bushcraft shit, this isn't the knife for that. The blade is very very nice though. My Ontario's and real KA BAR and Becker's are for that hard use stuff though.... The handle is for something of heftier blade, and carbon for sure. I messed up getting SS and thinking it was going to be bigger and thicker.

Let's see, the Gerber was all the praise back in the day so got the Mini Paraframe years back, it's an awesome little pocket knife I keep with me 24/7.

I'm the guy that has lost many, many knives :( so my collection looks pleb as fuck.

But yeah, pissed off about the stainless steel Mora. It will sit in the drawer too. It will not make a good freshwater filleting/ light duty camp knife like I was hoping. I will probably buy a Mora fillet knife like I should have.

I just got my first Opinel, a No.9 Carbon. Yes it will rust very easy, just as any carbon steel knife will. If you are using it as a food knife, the Stainless Steel option is much better. I like it because it's old lock and opening method does have a charm to it. Of course I carry more modern knives most the time, but it's nice from time to time. If you are using too much oil, the wood may be swelling up and causing more friction, they just need to be opened and closed a lot to break in.

The Kershaw Shuffle is pretty good. I bought a 4 pack last year, sharpened them, and put them in first aid kits for my/family/friends to keep in their car.

I've yet to use my SS Companion much, just got two (one for me and one for gf) last week. I've heard they have micro chipping problems. I just intend to use mine for light carving and to practice scandi sharpening.

Are you looking for a fixed blade or folder? If it's a tool box, probably a fixed blade.

For sub $50 folders the Ontario Rat 1 and Cold Steel Medium Boyaher is pretty robust, but if you can swing $70 the Cold Steel Code4 is my go to heavy duty folder. For sub $25 you could get a Pocket Bushman, I broke the tip off mine, but it was a crappy 4116 one, the new BD1 ones maybe better.

For fixed blades, sub $20 is the Mora Robust. Really anything that is carbon steel from a reputable company that is in budget will probably work.

I'm considering making my own sheath also. I work in a warehouse, and sometimes our pallets of freight from overseas come lined with this thick-ass black plastic material. It is flexible and can be cut with tools. I'm considering cutting a strip to match the profile of my blade and wrapping it with scrap nylon webbing or paracord. Thoughts?

Try a ZT 0450 if you want a light option with good steel. It's a manual finger flipper on ball bearings, so it's super fast even without a spring assist. You could go for a black or carbon fiber version as well, or the newer 0460.

I sent in a knife that had their shitty speedsafe, and they did a complimentary "sharpening." Out of the factory they seem to be OK, but the one I got was absolutely fucking trashed. Really? Sounds like a dud, then. I had damaged my 0450 because I was being fucking retarded with it, and I sent it in for repair. I got a new one, and it was perfect in fit and finish. The edge was fine as well.
Maybe the ZT service is just higher quality than the Kershaw one?

I've not really noticed this, in fact all the Kershaw Skylines I've gotten have some of the best factory edges I've seen. All my US Spydercos have come with a very uniform edge, most the Bucks, all the ZTs, I've gotten as well. In fact I can't think of any US knives on the top of my head that have comes with a particularly bad edge, just average, and as with almost all production knives, too thick.

Maybe a few Case knives I have have come with rougher edges. But that's about it.

I've never had a bad expeirence with Kershaw, ZT, or Shun (all owned by KAI), in fact would describe my experiences as very positive. Although I've never sent in a knife, they have always sent me what I needed.

But a side note; was it an American made Kershaw? I've only gotten good factory edges from US Kershaws, I've gotten very bad edges on Chines ones.

Oh actually I just remembered some US manufacturers, a lot of fixed blades. The Ontario SP line comes with atrocious edges, I've spent a lot of time regrinding my SP-10, pic related. I have a Blackbird from them, it's edge was okay, but still needed a fair bit of work.

All the Beckers I've handled had mostly uniform edges, but could have been more finely finished and sharper.

my bad if I made it sound confusing. I'm whining about the edge AFTER I got it back from warranty repair. I've only ever sent a knife back to them once, and it was just that time because of the speedsafe being broken. The knife was a blackwash blur, and out of the box it was fine until the speedsafe spring broke. All I know is, after that, if I have to send in knives for warranty repair, I'll be extra sure to specify to not get a complimentary sharpening. I'd much rather do it myself when I need to, than have those monkeys do it for me without asking. It's not even an expensive knife, but it really did bother me at the time. No reason warranty service should hinder a knife instead of making it better again.

But the Speed safe is very easy to fix. My cousins Kershaw Leek and my ZT 0770cf m4 had their speed safes break, and in both cases it took 2 emails and less than a week or two for a new spring to be at my door.

I find the speed safe weird. In both cases it broke with in the first few weeks. Both knives and all my other speed safe knives have now last year(s) with out a problem. I think something in the tempering processes of the springs has a high defect rate.

I've had mixed experiences with Kershaw. My Skyline was really uneven and even had a recurve and my Knockout also had issues. The rest have all been good though.

As far as ZT I've only owned the 0450 but it did a have slight unevenness in the edge. Not too bad but more than I would want in a 170$ knife in any case.

Hmm that's odd. I currently own 4 variations of Skylines, I've owned 1 other, and two family members of mine have them. All have them have come with almost perfect bevels, same for the 3 Leeks and the 1 Link I've taken a close look at. I guess some flaws are hard to avoid though with cheaper production knives, you must have been unlucky.

The Voyagers are nice. I bought a XL Tanto Voyager years ago, I think it's packed up with some of my stuff in the basement, need to find it.

As for the Rawles one, as far as I can see it's just a different coloration, with a DLC coating, and CTS-XHP steel... which is all very good in my book. Not a fan of the serrations though.

Ahh found it, it was in it's knife box, in a box of about 50 other knife boxes. I see why it's not with my normal knives. I lost one of the Phosphor Bronze washers, and Cold Steel, unlike ZT/Kershaw/Spyderco/ect... will not send parts. They requested I send the knife to them for repair... I'll be damned if I mail an entire knife instead of them mailing me a single washer. So I just bought a new washer off knifemaker... I'll have to find space in my Pelican case.

Also found my old user Machete. I fell with it on my belt and bent it, so now it's my beater, I use it if I need to cut up roots or ivy.

With what? The Voyager? I would not say after shipping and all, it's not worth it, considering a new one is only like $75 and in a better steel.

Also mine has been a sharpening test bench over the years. Right now it have a more normal 17 DPS edge, but it's on top of something like a uneven 10/13 DPS that I was experimenting with a few years ago, so it's not supper pretty.

It looks great to me, and I've been wanting to try out more Scandi grind knives as well. It's the kind of knife I would want in a bright color, and maybe keep in a glovebox.

I think Cold Steel does a very good job with AUS8a, for me that is a solid steel and I prefer it over most the Sandvicks.

AUS8a gets a lot of shit, but honestly with a good heat treat, It's not really a deal breaker for me, even in some more expensive knives like Al Mar.

Not a 25, it's the discontinued "regular" sebenza.
I used a boiling oxiclean bath for the titanium and ferric chloride for the steel.

beyond the meme status around here, the sebenza is an excellent knife & probably the most imitated folding knife around. In the past decade there has been an increase in high end production knives which give the sebenza a run for its money. Being a lefty, I appreciate that CRK continues to make dedicated left handed knives, so I have a bunch of them. They're not the end-all-be-all of folding knives, but they are very, very good.

there are some surprisingly good aftermarket clips available. Most are still titanium, but of a thicker stock. I use one on my 25-micarta because the stock clip doesn't fit over thick pockets on work pants very well.
I can't remember who makes it and I can't be bothered to go look. I will say this: I'm doing a full remodel on my kitchen right now, and have had the 25 + aftermarket clip in my pocket for several weeks of demolition/framing/crawling under the house/crawling around in attic/etc.... and I haven't bent it yet. I don't remember if I got the clip from a forum member or ebay, but it's great (deep carry too).

I really struggle with his heat treatment... in my opinion, as a sharpeningfag, it's a intentionally crappy heat treatment. Handy capping one of the primary attributes of a high end steel for the sake of "ease of sharpening" blows my mind. I'm even more than willing to over look the weak lock given how smooth it is and how most people will use a Sebenza. The temper is one of the main reasons I've not bought one yet. Even though I would not use it in a way that would expose the poor temper.

Even back in the day when CRK used BG42 the blades were under-hardened.....

I use a wicked edge system in combination with leather belts w/ green & white rubbing compound on my belt-sander for sharpening/power stropping. I'd definitely prefer a steel to be taken to it's maximum comfortable hardness.

The heat treat is my only real complaint about CRK.
I do actually use my CRK knives, in fact yesterday I used my seb.25 to cut an outlet hole in some drywall when the battery on my router died. So, on one hand, I'm glad that they're easy to sharpen ....BUT: I'd rather not have to as often.

Even "in the field" sharpening of harder powdered stainless isn't so much an issue for someone with basic but well honed skills.

I love ESEE (another meme) knives specifically because their heat treatment is nearly flawless.

What is your set up?

I have the Gen 1 base on a paper stone, with a Gen 3 vice (just got the .25 adapter), I've got the ball bearing arms, and I have from 50-1,000 diamond, the 1200-1600 ceramics, and the 5 and 3.5 mircron leather strops... I'm thinking about getting balsa wood next time I get new strops, and also getting the next level finer stropping compound for leather.

I'm pretty much have my set up down to the exact way I like it over the past 4 years of messing with it. I'm just going to get a Pelican 1600 (or something) to wrap it all up.

The Ball bearing arms and gen 3 vice are so worth it, they make setting up really easy, and really increase the precision. For serrations I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Yeah I have a 1x30 Harbor freight belt sander I use for machete/sword sharpening. I have a stropping belt, but I find I get a much better polish on fine edges with the WE.

I've been expanding my free hand stuff as well. I have a almost finished Water Stone set up, from 400 to 8000 grit, but need something between 1200 and 6,000, I'm thinking of getting a 3,000 Naniwa Chosera. For the really rough work I use DMT plates.
