Asymmetrical warfare is much more difficult to do when outside of your own country, it's really only a way to defend from a more technologically advanced adversary at the cost of more lives, for all of the shit that the US gets about Vietnam or the various sandboxes they've had to fight in, the one constant thing is they kill way more locals than the locals do of them.

In the sense that they are "Advising" on the ground militias, yes, however very little of the fighting is done by their own men, they still have to rely on indigenous forces as their own troops aren't "officially" there.

In the old days, if you didn't field an army the enemy marched through and torched every town, village, hamlet, and population center they came through until enough force was concentrated to stop them.
You want to stop this terrorism shit, you roll the artillery forward and mow down every goddamn shit heap of villages you come across until they come stop you. If nobody is in uniform, then everybody is in uniform. You're not going to make any friends but ask the native americans how much their guerrilla tactics worked when total war was in action against a superior foe willing to destroy them to the man.

It's not cheating. If anything, it's smart. Many militaries even have units that are trained in it but have modern equipment and better organization.
