Find a hole. Preferably with a solid but light cover.

Depends on size of arty, accuracy, how used to it they are, the duration of the bombardment, etc. Most US troops just sat around during mortar attacks and didnt give a fuck as the deployment dragged on. But that'd change under accurate, sustained artillery fire. Like I can't imagine getting shelled by triple 7s for days on end. kms

That's pretty fuckin deadly though, they have every right to be paniced. They're in a shack, the British had an armored vehicle to hide under and were in what appears to be a city, so shrapnel isn't nearly as much a threat.
If anything landed close to that shack everyone in it probably would have died.

Me and 14 of my closest coworkers were in an open field taking mortar fire for 20 minutes. There wasn't shit to hide under and so we scattered and begged for an an artillery strike that would never come. We popped smoke and broke off in fire teams to put some distance between us. They sent some kind of jet to scare them off but it took a helicopter rooting around to make them leave. We weren't happy about it but nobody broke down or anything. Mostly we just tried to make sure we knew where everyone was and if they were hurt. We didn't even have a medic or someone who knew how to call for fire. They had to talk my squad leader through it while he tried to remember what grid we were in. Those nine line cards with all our points written out were a fucking life saver. I think sitting in a trench is more taxing than scrambling since you're just waiting and praying with nothing to do

>War crimes

I don't think there's a bigger oxymoron in the history of the world than the term "war crime." How in the fuck is anything you do in the middle of a war singled out and labeled a crime when the entire thing in general isn't? I'm not even saying I hate war, I think it's natural. But the problem with labeling stupid shit as war crimes is that everyone throws it out and literally nobody can do shit about it until it's over and one side has won. And then that side gets to determine who is guilty. Gee, I wonder who'll they'll pick...

You do realize mortars come in a variety of sizes, including "really fucking huge", right?

I wish I still had all my pics from Iraq. Kept seeing these little, ~8" black marks on the pavement and going wtf. Platoon sergeant told me they were mortar strikes and I'm like pfft that ain't shit.

Then one hit our motor pool, landed between 2 uparmored LMTV's.
>8" black mark on the pavement
>2 completely shredded and burning trucks, armor didn't stop shit

If the rebels didn't want civilian areas targeted, then should have not stationed combatants there.

Western 81mm mortars have a pair of holes that make them whistle as they fly through the air so you hear a constant high pitched whistle as they fall before the boom
>>
>>33321284
So what you are saying is.. we should apply pavement to our vehicles.
>>
>>33321581
If you hear it you're good, when it's kind of a wavering rush of air that never quite gets to whistle it's coming for your bunk or way off. Some guys get good at calling short or long over a nearbeer, some guys jump every time.
