Communism is about taking power from one elitist bunch and handing it to another elitist bunch, killing everyone else in the process. Equality was just part of the marketing material.

The reality of it was that there and then, the Soviets needed all the soldiers they could get, morale was in the cellar and the front line was diminishing fast. And here was this motivated group of people right nearby, young and reasonably educated, who were begging for a gun so they could go fight. It gave the leadership the heebie jeebies but those were desperate times and it worked out.

The army was downsized and most in the military did not like the idea that woman would be in the armed forces, even with them being communist and all. Soviet woman themself saw it as an act of neccesity to fight. If the war never happend they would enjoy being civilian and the act of killing another human being is considered to be a mans job.

If the cold war went hot then we would see woman in the civilian defence sector etc but not in frontline troops as we would think.

WASP. When the US asked for female pilots to volunteer for flying planes from factories to the airports where they were needed, 25.000 volunteered. Only 1000 were picked, even though all the volunteers had prior flying licences. 38 died in service but they were denied military funerals. Back to Russia, and a lady who should by right have been the official /k/ mascot: Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya. She married an officer, and evidently was a quick learner. When WW2 started and her husband was killed, she sold everything she owned and gave the money to the state, wishing to donate a tank. The Russkis probably saw the PR value in this and let her buy the tank - and command it, in battle. Which she excelled at. When the tank was hit, on several occasions, she repaired it under fire. She was eventually fatally wounded and died on a hospital, as Hero Of The Soviet Union. Respect!

I am not sure of anything. Technically it is possible that the entire world I'm observing is just the nightmare of an ant on a planet somewhere in the Horse Nebula. I find pics that look interesting and post them on, with some facts maybe if the source provides them. But generally I try to avoid making guesses and I try to avoid pictures that look doctored, postwar or not genuine. That a lot of the people in the pics are posing, is the nature of photography. But I have yet to knowingly post a picture that attempts to tell a falsehood and I aim to keep it that way.

In general, standing armies, I don't think female combat troops make a lot of sense. They are weaker, slower, more sensitive, have different hygiene needs, etc.

However, in a TOTAL WAR scenario, I think you need every gun you can get. I wrote a paper on the role of Women in the Soviet Armed Forces in Relation to Germany During World War II and think the wider role of women in in the military was an important factor in the Soviets surviving a German onslaught and eventually pressing it back.

But, like I said, I don't really see female combat troops as necessary or even beneficial during most operations. The US currently has no need for them.

Like another anon has said, having a gigantic standing army is unnecessary unless you're in a massive war.

If my troops total 500,000 I'd want 500,000 men. If my troops NEED to total 4,000,000 then I'm going to NEED women in those positions.

"On the night of 29/30 April 1944, Wake was parachuted into the Auvergne, becoming a liaison between London and the local maquis group headed by Captain Henri Tardivat in the Forest of Tronçais. Upon discovering her tangled in a tree, Captain Tardivat greeted her remarking, "I hope that all the trees in France bear such beautiful fruit this year," to which she replied, "Don't give me that French shit."[5][9] Her duties included allocating arms and equipment that were parachuted in and minding the group's finances. Wake became instrumental in recruiting more members and making the maquis groups into a formidable force, roughly 7,500 strong. She also led attacks on German installations and the local Gestapo HQ in Montluçon.[9] At one point Wake discovered that her men were protecting a girl who was a German spy. They did not have the heart to kill her in cold blood, but when Wake insisted she would perform the execution, they capitulated.[10]"

Another unusual one. Technically, the serbian Milunka Savic did not fight in WW2 but in WW1, where she joined up under a male name. By the time they finally found out her out, she was already a hero and refused to transfer to the nurses, so they let her stay. She was also in a conzentration camp during ww - as a prisoner.

Oh, you have no idea what ugly is. Literally. These particular flowers had been held in cells with no access to washing or makeup, but the entire known world was held by different beauty standards than today. Pick any country or continent, find some one hundred year old pictures then take a look at people's faces. In just that time, the world has been looking at pictures of the prettiest people in the world and started selecting partners who can breed kids that fit those ideals while the facially challenged have been shove to the back of the queue.

This is however outside the scope of the thread. It's hard enough finding pics of ww2 women in uniform, if I am not to look for the least appetizing of them as well. And kinda disrespectful.

Reba Whittle, US Army Nurse. The only female American to become a POW in the European Theatre, when the medical evac plane she was on was shot down in 1944. While being a prisoner she did nurse work in Stalag camps. Many nurses became POWs in the Pacific but since she was the only one it took until 1983 until the Army acknowledged her having been a POW. By then she had been dead for almost 3 years.

I didn't see her posted here, the "White Lily of Stalingrad", Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak the #1 female fighter ace of all time: 12 solo kills and 3 assisted. including one 11 kill German ace who couldn't believe he had been shot down by a woman until she debriefed him personally.
Killed in action on August 1, 1943, she was 21 years old.

In the case of Irma Grese, I agree that a quick end at a rope was overly civilised.

"Grese was among the 45 people accused of war crimes at the Belsen Trial. She was tried over the first period of the trials (17 September – 17 November 1945) and was represented by Maj. L. Cranfield. The trials were conducted under British military law in Lüneburg, and the charges derived from the Geneva Convention of 1929 regarding the treatment of prisoners. The accusations against her centered on her ill-treatment and murder of those imprisoned at the camps. Survivors provided detailed testimony of murders, tortures and other cruelties, especially towards women, in which Grese engaged during her years at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen.
