Admin bullshit. I don't honestly know what a naval officer does, but I know PLs and company COs spend the majority of their time doing admin bullshit, in training meetings, and coming up with the training plan that everybody will follow- with heavy input from NCOs on that last part.

Jobs can change depending on your specific position and if you work in one is the specialized shops, but at the end of the day it's really just admin bullshit.

Pretty much all the officers I knew, junior officers, were complete fuckheads who micromanaged the shit out of everything that they had little idea about the workings of. Especially women officers, jesus fucking christ. I was in engineering, so most officers had a general idea of how shit worked, but should have left technical details to the technicians. I especially didn't appreciate ensigns and LTJgs telling me how my shit worked when I'd been working on the equipment for 4+ years. I had one LT who was cool, he signed the paperwork you handed and stayed out of your shit. He was too rad for the 'Prise. In any case, quit being a hero worship faggot, take your trip off, and fuck off out of here, officers aren't infallible.

OP here

I'm thinking of joining as one because I can't get a job at all in California and I need to pay off my student loans.

Do officers take part in the field or is it mostly office work like my recruiter told me but you guys make it sound like the boring 9 to 5 routine lol.

It depends on your job. If you're an infantry PL you'll get to go out into the field stuff and do field stuff here and there. Same for most combat arms positions. Especially if you branch something like aviation. You'll still have a lot of paperwork though. If you go something like administrative bullshit, well you're doing admin bullshit. That's your job, it'll be a lot like a 9-5.

I would imagine it depends on the job and the branch. I'm sure there are some intel officers who deploy to scurry places and do coolguy stuff with coolguys, I've heard stories of such things, but I think you'll probably be staring at a lot of aerial photos and trying to analyze what SIGINT is picking up about the activities of Abu-ballsack Goatfucker the Mujh

Not going through the usual prove it bullshit, but I had a relatively cool guy job when I was in. Came out of one of the academies.

A majority of your time in garrison is admin, power points and training related with some field training exercises spread throughout.

Deployments varied. First deployment spent a majority of the time in the TOC with some missions spread throughout learning the ropes with from guys with more experience on both ends. Second deployment I spent nearly the entire time with a team, which is all I wanted to do, best deployment by far as I was ground level the entire time getting my hands dirty and being in harm's way.

Third and fourth deployments I had been promoted a couple times and was relegated to command and control for nearly the entire time. Had a lot of responsibility but the entire time regretted my decision to go the academy/officer route and wished I had enlisted so I could be in the field with the guys.

TL;DR
Officers are management and spend their time doing paper work, admin and command related shit. In combat/labor intensive roles they do more of that than getting their hands dirty. In the intel world they oversee teams of junior intel folks and manage the bigger picture.

You'll have good times as a pl. It's rewarding to give task, propose, and any left or right boundaries, then watch how different soldiers solve tasks, and develop from that shamtastic specialist to a highly valuable corporal. I enjoyed having a platoon and competent ncos that I never had to micro manage. I'd tell psg what needed to be done and he delegated between the sections, sections delegated between their soldiers.

As an hhc xo I've developed alcoholism and instead of fighting the enemy it's a constant struggle against suicidal ideations and maintaining my sanity surrounded by incompetent ncos (got put into staff to hide from the line) and officers who don't give a fuck and just want their next key leadership assignment.
