>buy a large magnet on amazon for around 20 bucks
>tie a rope to it

Makes me wish I lived in Europe so I could find the refuse of WWII. There's a lot of metal collectors on instagram finding stuff.
>>

Really dude?

There's some guys on youtube doing that too. One of the guys I follow went up to a mountainside Ju88 wreck and found a mostly intact and fully loaded MG15 mag.

Yeah I'd only do it personally if I lived near a known battlefield or something.

Like shit, I wonder what you could find in the mud near the Volga or the forests around St. Petersburg.
>>
>>33307399
I tried magnet fishing in Sava river in Zagreb. The water smelled toxic and it irritated my skin so I gave up for now.
>>
>>33307623

We do it here in the South. I've done it for years, ever since I was a teenager.

Have found over 30 guns over the past 10 years or so. Now when I say guns, I'm talking everything from Civil War artifacts to more modern items, and sometimes actively seeking out items because I was near a known battlefield/skirmish location.

For the most part, you won't find anything in serviceable condition. Civil War artifacts are pretty much going to be rusty actions only and aren't worth very much money (but make good display items). Other guns it depends on how long it's been under, what it's made of, and where it landed.

Best places to search for are near bridges, especially more rural bridges because people are more comfortable going out to those areas. Search under the bridge, search around the bridge, imagine someone throwing something off the bridge. How far could they throw it?

Mostly, you'll find other things, but on a recreational lake you can find cool shit. I've found several steel pennies over the years, and they're still legally currency so if they're really fucked, turn 'em in for new pennies.

Car parts, lighters, home appliances, you'd be surprised. Lots of hicks have a habit of dumping shit when the water level is dropped for the winter and then during the summer everything is covered up by the higher water level
>>
Has anyone done this in the hood?

I'm sure rivers would yield up plenty of problem solvas!

I thought of this before when I lived in Chicago. I used to walk across a bridge that went over the Chicago river to get to school. When the water was clear, I could always see an old 1950s style bike down in the water. Made me wonder what else must be in the river.

in my family's summer place one could get a bit frustrated fishing shit from the lake(s), rivers and various swamp ponds, the lake next to the summer place is named after the fact that it was used as a source of "lake ore", meaning there's tons of chunks of magnetic rocks in various bodies of water there, as well as military hardware from Continuation war (years ago my cousin found some spent shells from some kind of cannon there), either abandoned & forgotten, lost in "boating accidents" or maybe even remnants of the late- to post-war weapons cache incident.

Can you actually reliability fix a gun that's been in the drink for over a few years? What course of action should I take if I find one?
>>
>>33309142
Depends on the gun.

Depends on your morals.
>>
>>33309149
I have pretty loose morals desu. As long as the numbers don't run for a serious crime I could care less.
>>
>>33309199
In that case keep it and shut the fuck up about where you got it from. Even if it was used in a serious crime as long as the police never have reason to inspect your guns you're fine.

Depending on where you live you can't just go "hey cops, found a gun, check the serials plz" and they go "it's clean, keep it". Best case scenario they attempt to find the lawful owner and give it back and after probably several years they give it to you after charging you a transfer fee, worst case scenario it rots in evidence holding til the heat death of the universe, you're NOT gonna be allowed to keep it in most cases if you tell the police.

Anyone do this from, say, a river shore?
>>
>>33309142
What that guy said. Some are fucked beyond repair and only look good on a wall. Others have minor pitting and aesthetically look like ass but function about like normal. Some you get lucky and they've only been down there for a little bit. But good rule of thumb is that if the pitting is covering ~60% inside and out or is more than 30% into the frame then forget about it.

Thanks senpai, good to know. What all should I keep a close eye on when inspecting and attempting to possibly use a lake gun? >>

Generally you don't have to be worried about wear from use, if it got tossed it was a low round count gun.

Look for broken or missing parts, find the schematics for it on Google. I'm sure there's some hick somewhere that broke a gun and instead of fixing it just tossed it innalake.

The big thing will be rust and rotten wood.

In a relatively still body of water the corrosion on a piece of metal will form a layer on the top of the metal but not penetrate it (hopefully).

>>
>>33309991
You could have just said yes, but you went for some pizazz. I like it
>>
>>33309841
actually it depends, with some metals such as zinc and titanium the corroded metal forms a protective layer while with others such as steel the corrosion tends to spread deeper overtime, of course if the steel contains something like zinc the spread of the corrosion may slow down or even stop.

>>

I mean they aren't evidence by now but you get the point
>>
>>33307523
Euro here with metal detector.

Trust me, it's hard work. You have to check old as maps before because just going out and searching just will waste your time.

Living in western Germany, I also read American after action reports for exact locations. Still I only found tons of brass and a rusty German helmet.

The good times where you could go Inna woods and find MP40s Stgws and the like are over. What's now left is absolutely rusted to one big chunk of shit.
>>
>>33311747
>Euro here with metal detector.

You have plenty of lakes north of you.
>>

Lake Pleasant would probably be a good place to find stuff. The canals too. Tempe Town Lake might actually be a decent spot since there are ghetto's not to far away. Chances of us AZ folk finding anything historical are slim to none.
>>
>>33314281
Tempe town lake was drained last year and the whole area around it pretty nice, with ASU and corporate offices to the south, Scottsdale to the north and a nice parks on either side. The best place to find stuff if your'e into that sort of thing would be in the canals in mesa and just south of sky harbor airport in Tempe.

Lots of countries have laws like that to stop treasure hunters from looting battlefields. The US made all of our battlefields into historical sites that you can't take anything from for example.

According to the book Aftermath by Donovan Webster, there used to be fields that surrounded Stalingrad that were just covered in corpses and gear. The clean-up was pretty much left to the farmers and peasants so a lot of the more remote areas were still littered with thousands of dead even into the 90s. They're almost gone nowadays because since then, people have been going down there to grab Nazi paraphernalia to sell as artifacts.
