Let's take a look at the winning side. Just for variation's sake.

1/10 Aussies, the rats of Tobruk
>>
2/10 More aussies, this time fighting the japs at Papua New Guinea.
>>

I don't know whats worse fighting in 40+ degrees celsius or fighting in -20 degrees celsius, guess if you can find shade and you have a decent supply of water heat beats cold any day

anyone got any experiences with this?

3/10 Yet another powerful ally against the Japanese; our friend Ho Chi Minh. Here posing with his buddies in the American OSS. What a pity that the French looked at the relationship with some sourness.

4/10 Mean while in England, the population was getting ready to defend their beaches and their fields and their mountains. If only their wives could keep their hands off them.
>>

Pretty damn well equipped for Home Guard. He must be a veteran of the Boer War
>>
5/10 US troops were also a bit uneasy about the whole island thing for a while. Here, US and Filipino soldiers are surrendering to the nippons at Corregidor Island.
>>
6/10 The British, like the Germans, were having problems with their supply and reinforcement lines. Here, surrendering at Tobruk.
>>
7/10 Captain Nieves Fernandez, a school teacher and the only known female Filipino guerrilla leader shows to an American soldier how she used her long knife to silently kill Japanese soldiers during occupation, 1944.

8/10, Ben Kuroki, one of my favorite American war heroes. He was born of Japanese parents and volunteered for the military right after Pearl Harbour. The US military was not very keen on letting him into the system, never mind allowing him into combat, but he eventually managed to get into the Airforce. Before the war was over he'd been shot down once and flown 58 missions. Kuroki is the only Japanese American known to have participated in air combat missions in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the war. In all he got 3 DFC, one Air Medal and one DSM.

I can't wait for Hollywood to pick up that one.
>>
>>33302591

Woops, I spoke too soon. He also got a Presidential Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver and three bronze campaign stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze campaign stars and the WW2 Victory Medal.

Western desert of Iraq, hottest days there I remember where close to 48-49C. I basically had to wear gloves because the steering wheel and gear knob would give you blisters on bare skin, you cover up as much as you can (despite it being uncomfortable) unless you want severe burns from the sun and hydrate every hour or you will be unconscious in about 6 hours and need an IV in your sorry, oh so sorry body.
After a while you just turn off the pain and get on with it. Pain won't kill you, but heat exhaustion will so it just stops being a factor... funny thing about the human mind when the body's under duress. You simply stop giving a damn

About 10000ft up, Afuckingainistan, gets down to about -15 to -20, snowing sideways in a gale that would throw a mountain goat off the side of a hill. Sleeping on rocks in little crevices, no fire, no light and oh boy, that shit is pretty fucking real because the cold will kill you. But the upside is the enemy isn't that fucking stupid either to go out in that kind of weather most of the time, so that's one less thing to worry about. Mostly survival comes down to wicking sweat away from contact with the skin, so we'd have a porous thermal layer, cotton or wool over that and then our cammys over the top. You might not think it would work very well as its not very much, but it does to a certain point and there's only so much shit you want to drag along with you on a long walk.
Altitude and cold is nasty- dehydration, altitude sickness and lack of hunger will cause the body to shut down and you'll just die. So its critical to verbally slap the shit out of people regularly so they drink and eat.

Norwegian, so more used to the winter than the tropics, but I have had a taste of both.
Cold isn't really an issue as long as you have warm clothes and can remain dry. There are hassles, like your canteen content freezing or having to drop some of your clothes when taking a piss or crap, or all warm food getting cold before you get a chance to eat it. Lots of little things.

By comparison, being in a jungle place means being dazed by the constant heat and wanting to shower ten times a day. The bugs, even when they aren't interested in you, are huge. And just when you drop your pants to take a leak you discover a two foot long lizard three feet away. I'll take the cold, no contest.

The Brits were allowed to buy Tommyguns at the start of the war, until the US got to participate in a war as well. Kinda surprising to see in the hands of a Home Guard though. I am half suspecting this is a propaganda picture.

Why was WW2 the most atmospheric war ever? I mean I know it would have sucked ass if you were on the ground just post D-Day and life expectancy was less that you'd like but I mean just the settings, the scale, the aesthetic and technology of the era and the grand importance of it all just made it cool as fuck. Taking
>>
>>33304641
Would fuck the shit out of the one with the medal on her chest
>>
>>33304961

I have some trouble understanding you there. Atmospheric? For most of the people back there, it'd be more like being a mailman in Aleppo. Everything you are familiar with, from clear sky to gardening sheds, can fall apart or explode. You live in constant knowledge that there could be bombs falling any time, there hasn't been any taste in your food for the last three years and you already know that half the officers above you are complete nitwits. It's fear, dullness, pain and not enough sleep. Even if you don't get to carry a gun. If you do, you are expected to walk twice as far on the same rations and the food guys are not necessarily delivering that week. Aesthetics, that's for computer games and movies.
>>
>>33305037
I mean looking back on it, obviously. I would have been an adventure though to be part of it, and many first hand accounts I've read have called it just that even if it wasn't a particularly nice one. It just seemed to give off that "this is the last time the world is wide" vibe.
>>
>>33305058

I'm not going to club you down on this. For most soldiers in a war, it's a few percentages of terror and 90% waiting. An American soldier would probably then as now be secure that no matter how badly things is going for his unit, the survivors will eventually get home again and there will be no ruins, no shortages and making dos, mostly everyone will be alive as they were before the war. There'll be apple pie and horn music and pretty women ready to receiver them. Unless you return on a stretcher with limbs missing because then you are put on a train without windows that doesn't stop because civilians hate to see that sort of thing.

Compare this with say a French soldier in ww2. His own country is invaded and half the leaders and officers say they should side with the enemy. If you are sent home on leave you get to hear that there are no eggs. Butter. Coffee. Jam. Your home might be a burning ruin, and noone knows where half your relatives are. I doubt he thinks of it as an adventure.

I was reading about the British Army and Indian Army in WW2 today, and was surprised by the sheer number of divisions raised by the British during the war. Obviously with a high rate of capture and lots of fronts to think about there was a very high rate of divisions being formed, reformed, disbanded or renamed, but it's still crazy that so many men were put under arms. The Indian Army raised well over 20 infantry divisions plus armoured and airborne formations, while the British Army raised over 40 divisions during the war (albeit never at the same time). Considering the massive manpower issues they were having, that's some feat.

Well. The UK had a pretty vast empire they were trying to keep control over. And after WW1, they were used to thinking big in military matters. It became more a matter of economics than to find the men. If the US had not been ready to 'lend' the UK vast amounts of supplies those divisions would hardly had pants to stand in. Which makes it really fun to think of the politicians who argued strongly for siding with the Germans instead, like jolly Joseph Kennedy. If that side had won it would have been a US-German alliance of a special kind.

If he had been a retired high ranking officer he'd not have been taken in as a private, but rather something not far below his old rank. Brits used to be a teensy bit sensitive about stuff like that. Probably they'd have given him a bureaucratic function, something in logistics. Also an officer would be given a revolver, not a trench sweeper.

Also, the Allies really wanted the Soviets to keep on fighting the Germans. Noone else were, really - the British barely had strength to do raids for a while, and things were going straight to hell in the places where they were doing serious fighting. Stalin was not wrong in continously yelling for a second front, because he was having the first one all to himself.

By the way, I have a thing for the Polish solders of ww2. They fought the Soviet and the Germans in their own country at the same time, then fled to France, and enlisted for new Polish units, then fought in Norway with navy and army units, then went to England and got British gear then went back to fight the Germans AGAIN in North Africa and then in France and Netherlands. All this in spite of considerable losses. That is an admirable fighting spirit. And how did the Allies thank them? By disarming them at the end of the war and sending them back to the Polish quays where Stalin's boys were waiting. Too bad about the gulags, but thank you for the all Polish pilots during the Battle of Britain. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

In the London Victory parades in 45, the only units not represented were the Polish. They were not wanted any longer.

Shit never stopped hitting the fan for the Polish soldiers. Those who had been captured by the Soviets, went from one type of problem to another for the Sovietskis after the Germans attacked them as well. The soldiers were given 'amnesty' then sent off to Iran to be an army somewhere, anywhere else.

I also have some respect for the poles. They passed through a lot of shit in their recent history, 18th century to late 20th century, but always maintained stubborn and resilient defence of their culture and nationality. Funny fact: my grandpa had a friend who was a field officer of the Wehrmatch during the invasion of Poland, that killed a pole in a melee fight, cutting off the top of his head.

It is possible, but it was also war and lots of people killed each other in a variety of ways, so, it is not like it was improbable either. I probably shouldn't have used the term "Field officer", in reality.

The full story was something more in the lines that the guy, a officer, maybe a NCO maybe a lieutenant, gramps never specified it, and his unit, dont know what branch, entered a partialy destroyed urban area. Somewhere there a polish soldier jumped from nowhere into him, and the guy cut the pole forehead with his saber. Now, I have no idea if german officers carried sabers with them to combat in the early stages of the war. Grandpa had a really good memory, so is difficult that his friend had said that he used something like a bayonet and gramps mistook it to a saber. Anyway, the guy then said that soon after killing the soldier he got a horrible chill down in his spine. He got himself mourning his kill until the end of the day, when he finally got to eat something, then the mourning simply passed and he found himself proud that he killed that pole, and carried on with his life.

Not being an American, I can only guess that it took some while before they were able to first recover from the Pearl Harbour blow, then start building a military force capable of doing any fighting at all om the ground. Digging out all the ww1 uniform gear was one thing, but there was a huge shortage of things like weapons. Many marines did not get more than three weeks of training for a while, and did not touch a real rifle until they were actually deployed.

The rifle on the picture is a Parris training rifle. More than half a million of these were used in the US military training camps, as real ones could not be spared. Shooting practice must have been odd.

>>
>>33308305

I would not know. I have not played it. What I love is deviation from the normal, quirks and anomalies that so easily get slipped out of the history books because those are facts that complicate things for the teachers. Go look in an American school book and find out which politicians supported the nazis before it got out of fashion. Go look in a British school book for information about how much the UK took from India. Look in a German one to find how many kids they fathered in the occupied areas. I could go on not just all day but the rest of the month.

So, when I find something they don't show on the front of the history books, I rejoice.
>>
>>33309215

I do not know the details. I do know that after ww2 the careful net of British colonial outposts in the Middle East was shrinking rapidly. British politicians probably thought it was absolute genius to hang on to Jerusalem by populating it with English-related white non.muslim guys and a lot of refugees they didn't particularly want themselves either. Everyone loves a quick easy solution.
>>

It looks like they had the reputation, and clearly shit happened. And on scale. I have this stuff on hand right now:

However, the military achievements of the Goumiers in Italy were accompanied by widespread reports of war crimes: "...exceptional numbers of Moroccans were executed—many without trial—for allegedly murdering, raping, and pillaging their way across the Italian countryside. The French authorities sought to defuse the problem by importing numbers of Berber women to serve as "camp followers" in rear areas set aside exclusively for the Goumiers."[2] According to Italian sources, more than 7,000 people were raped by Goumiers. [3] Those rapes, later known in Italy as Marocchinate, were against women, children and men, including some priests. The mayor of Esperia (a comune in the Province of Frosinone), reported that in his town, 700 women out of 2,500 inhabitants were raped and that some had died as a result. In northern Latium and southern Tuscany, it is alleged that the Goumiers raped and occasionally killed women and young men after the Germans retreated, including members of partisan formations.[4].

On the other hand a British journalist commented, “The Goums have become a legend, a joke… No account of their rapes or their other acts is too eccentric to be passed off as true.”[12]

The CEF executed 15 soldiers by firing squad and sentenced 54 others to hard labor in military prisons for acts of rape or murder.[11]In 2015, the Italian state recognized compensation to a victim of these events.[13]

Fuck no, it wasn't the communism that was the US' problem with Minh. It was the fact that France wanted Vietnam, what with being their colonial masters, and America has always loved the French. One of the uglier faces of war. This kind of shit happened from Africa to Northern Russia, with highly varying consequences. Germans ranged from full on genetic cleansing to upholding the standards of Berlin Police. Here in Norway, during the occupation, if a woman was as much as touched unwillingly by a German soldier he risked being courtmartialed and executed before the day. And this happened, often enough, that discipline was high. In the far north in the combat areas where SS was passing through to and from the Soviet fighting, things were not as civil.
>>
>>33305572
There were hundreds of thousands of desertions, so many that Britain had to amnesty the lot after the war because they had basically created a criminal underclass since they couldn't very well rejoin normal society with a charge hanging over them. Otherwise good troops would desert from combat when they hit their breaking point. Some more than once, but the problem was so severe their units often took them back if they returned freely.

Throwing in a few pictures from the battles for Narvik, Norway in 1940. On one side a mixed German bag: Dietl's gebirgsjagers, Kriegsmarine ratings from the sunk German fleet, Fallschirmjagers and Luftwaffe pilots and air crews. To supply everybody, they took local Norwegian military supplies and used both weapons and uniforms. On the other side: Norwegian soldiers, British soldiers, Polish soldiers, and the French Foreign Legion. It was a cold and snowy winter and only the Norwegians and FFL had skis, but the FFL could not actually ski. The Gebirgsjagers on the other hand were superb skiers.

Things looked so bleak for the Germans near the end that Hitler authorized Dietl to retreat to Sweden. Then at the last minute France was invaded and all the Allies left Norway within a couple of days. Dietl promptly occupied Narvik again.
