Okay lets see about Obscure... or how obscure is obscure? Anything out side of Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, ect...? Is Rockstead or Gavko or Blackheart obscure? How about Will Moon? I guess obscurity implies age..

So; Tapio Wirkkala designed Puukko from the 1970's. Made by Hackman in Finland.

Super close to pulling the trigger on this knife.

I own a couple of Benchmades but don't have any experience with ZT's. Anyone with this model that can help me make up my mind?

i have a 0566 - bretty gud, but to be honest, the only folding knives i carry lately are my spyderco techno, and gec beer scout. Other than that, i just carry a fixed blade, cause it's much more handy.

It's a good knife. I have the 0562cf, it's one of my more carried knives. Great ergonomics, very good flipper on the bearings.

I just took mine apart and cleaned it up after 2 years of carry, I forgot how smooth it is.

I don't think they even still make the 0560/0561.

Depends on how much. New they were going for $260ish. A lot of that was going into the more complicated CNCed handle. Also, it's a larger knife than the 0562/cf.

They are very well made in the US, and made of good enough materials to justify the price point if you like the design. I.e. you aren't getting ripped off.

Personally though the 0562 is a better size for EDC, the 0560/0561 are too big. Not to say I would never carry one, I have carried my Ti Military before.

It's CTS-204p, not 20cv. 20cv is one steel I've yet to try out. The only super high carbide steels I've got experience with so far is CPM-M4 and ZPD-189 (pic related), and they sure are a bitch to sharpen, they take for ever to reset the factory bevel and then bring to a good polish. Although CTS-204p is no slouch either.

Yeah there are a bunch of custom guys that make Titanium ones, but they still use Box cutter blades, and normally they are dog tag sized. My cousin has a really nice one, but I forget what it is.

The only thing that really comes to mind, but it's different from what you are describing, is pic related.

Kershaw (I think) made a folder that used interchangeable scalpel blades, not really the same thing though.

As for comfortable in hand, have you given many folders a try? I own many folders, only a hand full of them really feel great in my hand. I find most Spydercos have tremendous ergonomics, like my Tuff is the best feeling folder I have.

All three are very good steels. Honestly much better than anyone "needs".

I should have been more specific.

I wasn't referring to ergonomics, but blade deployement/closing.

So my brother wants some throwing knives for his birthday in a few months. I don't want to do anything too expensive and obviously throwing knives are kinda dumb anyway but they are a cute gimmick so I figured I would get him some.

https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-RC-1793B-Throwing-Handles-Overall/dp/B0060E6964/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1466021720&sr=1-4&keywords=throwing%2Bknives&th=1

What do you think of these, /k/? I'm not going all out and buying him a ton of 75 dollar diamond-tipped laser-balanced throwing knives but I want to make sure I don't buy complete shit.

Also, thoughts on this book? It's suggested to be purchased with the knives.

https://www.amazon.com/Knife-Throwing-Practical-Harry-McEvoy/dp/0804810990/ref=pd_bxgy_200_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0804810990&pd_rd_r=ZBR4CBSK5VAK6W7K1TTE&pd_rd_w=e6THi&pd_rd_wg=DgZqN&psc=1&refRID=ZBR4CBSK5VAK6W7K1TTE

Sorry for the shitty links, Not sure how to shorten Amazon URLS.
>>
>>33304465

What's important is that the knives have decent balance, not that they have good steel. They'll get all sorts of fucked up from impacting trees/fences/walls, and they're basically unhardened to begin with because of this.

It depends on how much you're willing to spend, and whether you want him to have a set of throwing knives or one decent one.

I don't have any experience with throwing knives outside of throwing around a friend's, but Cold Steel is generally reliable, much more so than random "Made in China" shit you'll find elsewhere. Their cheapest throwing knife is a single knife for $12.00, or a set of 3 for $28.00.

http://www.coldsteel.com/products/throwing-knives/mini-flight-sport.html

From the comments of the one you linked from Amazon, it appears that they're decently balanced though, it just depends on how much you're willing to spend.

I just beat the hell out of, completely delimbed, a tree that just fell across the road, for half an hour, testing out the Schrade Brush Sword... What a beast for $35. I'm worried if it will last for years of use, but so far it's held up very well... Pic was taken before today, don't feel like taking a new one atm, but the coating has held up well, only silver about half an inch behind the edge.

I second Cold Steel. Their cheap carbon steel stuff is generally pretty good, may need some love and care out of box, but they last a long time. I have a few CS Machetes.

You don't need money to enjoy knives. Even at the $10-$50 mark there are fun knives to have.

And Microtechs are far from the worst, or lest practical (pic related), meme knives one can get. They are very well made, and have a pretty good resale value as far as production knives go.

It's not that bad. Just need to work on not rounding out the tip, I had to practice that with the knife I made. Also, if you drill the holes for the handle, might as well make wood/micarta/ect... handles for it. Brass pin construction is pretty easy once you practice it.

I never took any detailed pics of my first knife, this is the best I have.
>>
>>33307499
The holes are not for scales. I have notches in the spine and start of ricasso for the cord and the holes are so you can lash the knife to a stick or pole to make a spear. It's a "survival" back packing knife.
The tip will be more pointy when I put the edge on.

Sub $60 knives.jpg

>>33308038
Define not breaking the bank? Generally I think of that as sub $50. In that case;

Rat 1 (as >>33308175 said), Kershaw Skyline, Kershaw Link, Kershaw leek (see a trend?) Cold Steel Medium Voyager, honestly you can't go wrong with most folders from CRKT, Kershaw, or Cold Steel. But Kershaw has the benefit of having some US made ones if that means anything to you.

If you want to go really cheap, sub $20, Opinels are great knives, very functional, it's worth keeping one in your car or in first aid kits.

If you can swing $70ish, the Cold Steel Code4 is an amazing knife, it's a tank, it will last a life time if maintained, and still manages to be slim and light, not to mention the amazing steel for the price.
>>
>>33308500

>>
>>33306257

But these knives were not made pre-1900s.
They're made with new materials and tools to look like they were made with primitive tools. This "homage" is a gimmick that only fools fall for.
>>
>>33308785
holy shit you are stoopid.

those are yakut knives. get yourself educated:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakutian_knife

the "homage only fools fall for" is a key design feature that makes the knife as effective as it is.

as for modern materials - russian equivalent of 52100 is used, but the blades are forged, rather than made with stock removal.

>the "homage only fools fall for" is a key design feature that makes the knife as effective as it is.
And what exactly about it makes the knife effective? I could see the advantages for a bone knife, but I don't see it for a steel knife. It just seems like a cultural holdover from when they'd put those in a bone knife.

>>33312465
I've heard they're good, though maybe more pricy than they need to be.
>>
>>33312886

the advantage here is processing meat and wood.

Same reason some chisels have a hollow grind like that. It's shaped like that, because it works, as it has for hundreds of years.

Idiots who go "welp, now that modern methods and materials are available, we should do everything the modern way" are a fucking plague.

People like the Sammi, and the Yakut, and Inuit, have been using knives as tools in their everyday lives for generations, until some schmuck with a 1/4'' thick BK2, or a PissDrinker (tm) survival knife comes along and declares an end of tradition, because we modern now.
>>
>>33312886
Alright, I actually looked this shit up. The op knife basically has a fuller, the same shit put in swords to make them lighter. That effect is significantly diminished in a knife. It does benefit by displacing material in a relatively unstressed zone, or the center of the blade, to the stressed edge and spine providing structural integrity and aesthetic looks. A lot of the answers I see online liken it to an I-beam.

The real benefit I see for the fuller in the op knife is perhaps using less steel to create a full blade. Hard to tell without seeing the thickness of the blade throughout.

i will concede, this isn't the knife i use for real men's work.
the Sebenza is the knife i bring to work to prep food - cutting apples & stuff
it's also the knife i carry when i have to put on a suit, but i still might need to cut something, without scaring some libtard
Sebenza is a nicely made luxury knife.
i wanted one for a while, i happened to be in a shop that carries them, i took a look at it and i was impressed enough to make the purchase.
i doubt i'll regret it.
if i decide i don't like it, i can sell it and easily make back at leat 80% of what I paid for it - a negligible loss as far as i'm concerned.

Also the Rat 1, Cold Steel Medium Voyager, and pretty much most things from CRKT, Kershaw, and Cold Steel from the $25-whatever range.

If you want a not so modern, but really cheap (sub $20) and still really good. Consider Opinel and Svord.

Bucks 420ch is pretty good, It's easy to sharpen, and holds and edge surprisingly long. More so 420ch has very good edge stability. but yeah i would not use it very heavy, like batoning. But in general I don't find 420ch (as done by buck) to be a deal breaker on small to medium sized knives.

In the $50-and-under category you have a whole slew of Kershaws (with my choice being the Leek), Kabar's Dozier, a spearpoint or drop point CRKT M16, and a few other options.

Generally for EDC I prefer thinner blades, which is why I like the Leek so much. Thin knife, good blade shape, okay steel over all and good for the money, the assisted opening mechanism works well and hides the grit in the action.

Unfortunately over $400... but everything considered, I can't really say it's not worth it... I'm going to buy one some day.

Ultimately I would love to have a folder from them like pic related, but it's around $1,500

Don't feel bad, Namefag. I looked at some razors that costs just as much or more. Damn beauts though.

You guys like the dutch bushcraft knives channel?

Yeah from time to time. I don't find them that informative though, they seem to be more entertainers than reviewers. And some of their conclusions I'm not sure about, like their view on Esee, I agree they run them soft, but not so soft that they should act the way they suggested it did.

Yeah it's a nice knife. My only complaint is that the handle would be more ergonomic if it were not straight in the back and instead curved a little.

Is here.

Looks and feels nice except for centering which is quite off. It looked almost like a straight point, but when you hold it, it's obvious that it sweeps up.

Technically no, but you'd be hardpressed to see a difference in performance outside of strenuous lab testing of any high quality blade steel.

They're similar enough (all top-quality) that changing the steel for each series of production has entirely unaffected the price.
