You said it yourself you made camp by a marker - expect to get company regardless of time of day. I hike day and night and have run into people's camps multiple times. Only way to expect reasonable privacy is to go off trail for some time, away from streams, lakes, roads and mountain tops.

Oh I know, its a real scenic spot too.

I was unnerved though by someone coming alone that late,it was about 2130 and odd to go recover shit that late at night. Sundown was about an hour and a half prior, so skulking around the woods at night especially alone seems imprudent.

Its not so much that i wanted privacy, it was that I wasnt expecting anyone to meander middle of the night onto a hilltop only really accessible on one side.

You'd be surprised how many people hike at night. Some just run out of daylight like I do on long hikes, others specifically climb peaks after sunset just because they've done them during the day already and are looking for a new challenge or some other shit. Hell, around my neck of the woods, there was a couple who made it a point to summit all of the high peaks wearing a tux and a wedding dress. People are weird man, but I'm not surprised to meet someone in the woods any season, any time of day anymore.

Im a firm believer of "nothing good happens after midnight" and while I obviously will prepare for this better next time, it was my first time alone and was surprised.

To tag onto this I wrote it while I was going through alcohol withdrawal. I was a dog handler for ten years and then was medically separated for issues I had with my lungs from what the doctors say could be from the burn pits. When I got out I didn't have to work anymore and I was drinking a pint to a 5th of skol vodka a night.

I went cold turkey and I honestly think I almost died but didn't want to go in patient. Wrote this on my phonewhen my gf was asleep and I was trying to fight the urge to get booze and end the anxiety.

The "j376" was a play on my k9's tattoo number but was off by two numbers so no one would actually track me down through my dog. There are articles out about me and that particular dog and the articles had his actual tattoo number so it'd be easy to track who I was.

I was deployed to a prison in southern Iraq, I did have experience with "black prisons" and the name "Jurassic park" was the actual name of one of them.

The rest is just alcohol withdrawal induced anxiety I was trying to combat by writing that to keep my mind busy.

Kind of cool to see people liked it.

Guys....i grew up in the woods. Literally lived beside 45 square miles of forest in Western NC, spent all of my youth shooting squirrels and deer. I have never had a single experience in the woods that i could not explain. This isnt to say ive never been scared before (i have a few greentexts about cougars and wild dogs) but damn...is there something wrong with me? In my experience, I'm going to say most of those cases have to do with dum dums getting lost or falling. Both are a death sentence, especially if you don't pack a radio or flares (but but muh lightweight!).
