And people wonder where furries come from when our childhoods are full of this?

Honestly makes me kinda wonder why people have been telling stories with anthropomorphic animal people since forever, basically. Like as long as there's been fiction furries have been a thing.

Disney, Starfox, Redwall and so forth were pretty big influences on me. Is it any wonder that it's an influence on people going forward?

I mean honestly, some people act as if furries just materialize out of thin air for no given reason, what do you expect when someone's formative years are saturated with anthro characters that they like? That they'll just suddenly forget about them the moment they grow up?

They just HAD to know what they were doing with this one.

Disney has a pretty long history of putting in scenes with a pretty obvious subtext once you're old enough to notice it.

When I was a kid I was always confused why Robin Hood and Marian were taking a long walk off into the woods to find a quiet secluded spot, then why Robin was so irritated when all his friends suddenly burst in.

>>33299043

I noticed that too. In the sequel they originally intended the new male character to be Scar's son but changed that late in development because it meant that the main plot would then be a romance between confirmed first cousins.

I guess the difference is that they figured people would actually notice if they explicitly stated that these two were the children of two brothers, while with Simba and Nala it's almost certainly the case but nobody noticed because Nala's parentage was never explained.

I'm really having a hard time deciding whether to sperg.

Did they do this because they didn't know how throttles work?

Did they do this because they actually researched carrier landing execution?

If they did, do they realize you can't go around if it's a tunnel with a hard end?

Is it totally not worth the neurons to consider?

Again it's kinda left ambiguous, Kovu was supposed to be Scar's kid by Zira, but they changed that at the last minute to avoid confirmed incest, instead claiming he was some other lion that Scar took on as a protege or something.

Personally I don't really care and would prefer they were family because it increases the stakes and tension of the conflicts but I guess a realistically incestuous lion pride would scare the normies so whatever, I know how it's 'supposed' to be.

I will say Disney has a very strange idea Bout which gauges are most important. You get an attitude front and center, but have to look on your radio stack for airspeed. Copilot gets a fuckhuge voltmeter oil temperature, pressure, and something under the attitude, egt next to it, two giant fuel gauges, and the copilot looks to have a fuel shutoff, mixture, or primer.

Wait, is one of the throttle sets mixture or prop, because fuck me that would be annoying

I think they probably just didn't know much about cockpit layout. I mean, shit, British aircraft manufacturers didn't manage to figure it out until the '60s or '70s, it's hard to expect some random animatiors to do much better.

As I recall the plane was supposed to be pretty heavily modified, so the haphazard setup could be the result of that too.

I don't know if I'd really say it was furry, I kind of get what you guys are saying; but fictional talking animals have been a thing since spoken language. I wouldn't consider the god of the dead anubis, roger rabbit, or the street sharks to really be 'furry' characters.

I think the whole distinction of the furry thing vs just plain old fun talking animals for kids is the sexual connotation.

Like as a rough analogy; let's talk about foot fetish. There is dedicated foot fetishist content. But an episode of baywatch where everyone's running around on the beach barefoot (although I could see the argument that a foot fetishist could probably jerk off to it) is not a formal endorsement, or such an aforementioned dedicated work.

Sure someone could jerk it to wholesome talking critters, just like someone could jerk it to some woman's exposed ankle on the subway; doesn't mean those cartoon characters were designed to cater to furries or that woman's an ankle exhibitionist whore (or maybe they WERE, and maybe she IS; what I'm trying to say is it isn't a given or a black and white issue at a glance)

Right right, I guess it's more reasonable to say that that kind of content brought out and reinforced any potential dispositions in that direction, rather than instilling it itself. I mean I can't say why anyone else is drawn to furry stuff I could only give my personal reasons.

Though my point about Disney kinda stands, they put in plenty of innuendo in some of their movies and the ones with talking animals were no exception, so if someone picked up on it during puberty I could see that having an influence on their likes later in life.

I don't think it's that big of a jump, honestly. I mean, look at the average Disney princess protagonist- young, thin and shapely, big eyes and good features. When they do an animal character with humanistic qualities, those things all usually transfer over anyway.

The question back then however, was not if they were catering to, but if they were creating that crowd.

To remain tangentially weapons related, look at what was done with military equipment in cartoons. There's a surprising amount of "pretty good" examples of tech, with at least a semblance of quality mimicking real world devices- yet they were often different enough to be not perfect. Still, that creates a mental image of what guns and such are "supposed to" look like in kids. You didn't precisely know what something was (unless they told you), but you immediately could connect that because a certain gun has some specific and obvious features that it was very dangerous or deadly. This often took the more realistic route- extended mags, big scopes, sleek appearance, etc, or the fantastical- flared blunderbuss muzzle, multiple barrels, GIANT scopes.

Apply this then to the appearances of certain characters or human-like animals: They have all the characteristics that are related to beauty in humans, meaning that they're supposed to be attractive. Mix in fur and hormones and you have a generation that associates beauty and sexuality to such characters much more easily.

Makes perfect sense I think, not really much I can add to that besides personal experience.

For me, I had some serious issues of repression when I was younger in terms of anything sexual (thank you public school sex ed) and would feel intense shame if I ever even thought about the subject. But nonhuman characters were on the other side of the uncanny valley and I didn't have that emotional response to them, so I was able to explore my feelings a bit until I grew out of that shame. And now that I'm older and past all that I still like it.

Good points about general pattern recognition, probably did blur a few lines, seeing features you consider attractive on a human character transferred over to a nonhuman character and thus the attraction being spread.

Also I think it would be easier for them to slip in some romantic or erotic subtext when dealing with nonhuman characters, for the same reasons that censors were more lenient with violence between nonhuman characters. Some animated shows had incredibly explicit lines in them while Disney was usually content to just imply it. If I remember right one of the devs described the 'can you feel the love tonight' scene as the steamiest love scene they'd ever gotten away with.

Even longer then that probably, look at the pyramids and their tombs, human animal hybrids have been a thing forever.

Maybe it's the same thing as to why most furry art and things are appealing in both the physical and mental sense Both animal and furry faces are mostly symmetrical, and we already find animal features cute on cat girls and the like.

There are plenty if things to add or note.

Or it could be that the chart is true.

Eh, I was furry as fuck long before I knew 4chan was a thing, since I was about 15 or so was when it really kicked off for me. For others I suppose a place like this could expose them to material they didn't know they would enjoy before coming here.

But yeah Redwall was great, I watched the show first then got into the books, though I didn't really read that many of them. I personally thought the animated show made some good changes to the story in a few minor ways.

It was a simplier time... a fun time where your character was your character, where katanas and red and black wasn't berated for just being there.

Maybe i'm crazy, but i miss those days. Yes, certian people were fucking shoving it down your throat with how furry they were, but i remember how friendly and kind some of the people could be.

It's not something I really ever bring up outside of a situation where it seems relevant, like a thread like this.

Kinda irks me that most people think furries are all obnoxious glowstick slinging fursuiters. Those people are the open carry protesters of the furry world, loud obnoxious jackasses who shove their personal interests into your face then act loudly butthurt and persecuted when you ask them to leave you alone. Most are people like me who quietly enjoy what they like and don't bother people about it.

To be fair here, there was a period in internet history where Furries were extremely obnoxious and intrusive, and brought that shit up everywhere constantly.

Kind of like Bronies x10.
>>
>>33305318
Fair enough, guess I must have missed that period, can understand the annoyance. Hopefully it'll cool off eventually. One thing I've noticed on 4chan over the years is that I've never once seen a furry actually ruin a thread, but people bitching about furries has ruined quite a few, the hyperbolic overreactions are generally far more irritating than the actual furries themselves.
>>
>>33305358
Interestingly enough, Moot was annoyed enough by Furries to ban them from everywhere but /b/, and even now /trash/ is the only place they can freely post, while Bronies got a containment board.

>there was a period in internet history where Furries were extremely obnoxious and intrusive, and brought that shit up everywhere constantly.
Honestly I think that was just one of the earlier meme fetishes. You know, that one thing people would go out of their way to cram down people's throats because it was so weird and degenerate. A lot like traps the past couple of years. However, also much like the trap fad, it got beaten to death by all the loud faggots and shitposters. I would say that, by virtue of timing and the subject matter being particularly weird to outsiders (at least traps depict humans), the furry forcing and ensuing backlash lingered on for a lot longer and the stigma is still seen to this day, even though the whole "look guis, a lion-man with a COCK XD!!1" shit has pretty much stopped and furfaggotry is much more insular and contained. I also think furries became a punchingbag (perhaps even unfairly so) for literally everyone else on the internet, used by others with weird fetishes as a way to say "hey man, at least we're not those ANIMAL FUCKERS right!?." People acting like anyone who wanks it to a foxgirl also has a $1200 fursuit, attends conventions, and thinks they're an animals reinforces this scapegoating theory.
>>
>>33305420
>Traps

Always dismissed any freakouts about furries by reminding myself that the people passing out the torches and pitchforks are themselves probably into some obscure fetish that other people would happily mock about them.

There's nothing quite like unearned smug moral superiority to get people whipped up into a frothing hatemob.

See >>33305420, the widespread furry menace has long since subsided and they essentially just stay on the websites and imageboards dedicated to furfaggotry. That doesn't mean you still won't see retards doing the whole Yiff In Hell routine, even though they likely were still in highchairs when furfaggotry was running rampant on the internet. They have no idea about the context of the anti-furry reaction and just use it as an easy target.
>>
>>33305457
Well, part of the problem was that Furries were acting as if their fetish was the same thing as being gay or something like that - something you are as opposed to something you're into. BDSM types know to keep that shit quiet unless they're among other people in that community, for example.

On the contrary, the presence of such characters usually means the story is shit because the writer cares more about his niche interest than of writing itself.

>Genetically engineered canine soldiers

Actually I was writing something like this a while back on one of the few blatantly furry /k/ threads that avoided getting nuked, about a team of operators wearing shapeshifting canine exoskeletons that also messed with their heads to instill pack dynamics, altered social mores and kept them in the headspace of obedient attack dogs for their loving but demanding handler.

Was pretty fun to write but I kinda petered out and lost interest because not that many seemed interested in reading it, apart from a small group I still keep in touch with.

It wasn't really my fetish but apparently a lot of the people who read it really enjoyed the low key mind control and master/pet dynamics, for me it was mostly an interesting concept that popped into my head and I just had to write it out.

Ironically, 4chan furries have been the most civil, socially functional I've encountered. I think it might be as simple as spending all that time in or out of a hugbox; 4chan is no hugbox. It also offers a necessarily older demographic of furries. At any given time a lot of the furry population is barely pubescent. We should probably expect shitty RP and cat fights

Sounds interesting, I'll give it a look.

My explanation has more than a few holes in it I know but it's mostly a justification to make what I wanted to explore, not a logical development.

In my story, human operators are sealed inside canine exoskeletons, referred to as Wardogs. The suit interfaces with the pilot's mind and essentially becomes their body, feeling totally natural. In order to function the suit influences the pilot's mind to make them more comfortable with their status, because they can't just hop in and out without the powerful mental link causing problems turning it on and off rapidly.

Essentially, the Wardogs are still independent intelligent people, but after they're fully inducted into the program they act a lot more like dogs than humans, playing fetch and getting petted and so forth, very obedient of their handler and having no qualms about ripping apart an enemy combatant with teeth and claws and just eating him right on the battlefield.

The balance I was going for was to avoid them being some generic evil mind control supersoldier program and have the mental influences straddle the line between benign and scary, some degree of mental influence is needed to help them adapt and be effective, but it also is conditioning them to make them more loyal and obedient, to the point where some of them face legitimate problems when they retire.

In a future story I'm planning on dealing with the retirement issues, some wardogs successfully transitioning back into normal society, others choosing to abandon human life altogether and either remain in service for as long as possible, or save up and buy a civilian dog body and find a new way to live back stateside as a half ton cybernetic dog.

Link if anyone is interested.

>>
>>33306239
Fair enough, I tried to keep it from getting too blatant, I didn't want to turn it into overtly fetish material either. So far there's just the one actual sex scene that's just a small bit tacked onto the end of one story.

Where exactly did it lose you, out of curiosity? I was trying to keep it fairly tame, so I'd like to know what crossed the line to avoid doing it too much in the future.
>>
>>33306258
Pretty early, actually. The obedience thing really read as sub/dom to me, and I couldn't really get past it. I'm not really into that, so it didn't hold any intrigue.
>>
>>33306224

I think the concept of neural interfacing with military hardware and the effect it would have on the mind of a person is pretty interesting. Like, a helicopter pilot wouldn't just be a pilot, he'd be the fucking helicopter itself as far as his brain is concerned when he's hooked up into it. So when they've been in the field for a long period of time perhaps they'd get phantom pain in their rotors, feel blind/deaf without their 6th radar sense and whatnot when they disconnect.
>>
>>33306278
Ah, well, that was kinda central to the whole premise so I can't really do anything about that. don't blame you, if it's not your cup of tea that's that, but it's not really something I could do anything about. Especially with a bunch of other readers telling me how much they loved that aspect.

To each their own, thanks for chiming in, feedback for a writer is always great to get.

Yeah, that's kinda a thing in my story. One of the sections has the protagonist out of his suit for a while after spending the better part of a year in it, having to get used to a frail human body that seems blind and deaf by comparison without multiple cameras and sensors pointing in every direction, he's used to his mechanical body having the sensory capacity of an F-35..

And the social differences as well, he can't just get food whenever he's hungry or wander around as he wishes. When the dogs aren't on missions they're basically free to do whatever they want in their downtime.

Also a feeling of isolation from the ingroup/outgroup mentality, no longer part of his pack now that he's out of his armor because he's not quite the same being when he's unplugged.

That kind of total immersion is why some of the wardogs stop thinking of themselves as human altogether and decide they never want to go back to what they were.

Symbolism? Relatable characteristics? Hard to say, so many things mean such different things to others. Culture is a puzzle in itself, so i suppose it's that times memes that just took place. Richard Dawkins had a better idea then most of what we could be like, we all want to belong and join groups and fandoms. Anubis could have been their Dragonball for all we know, one guy liked it and a culture spaned from it.

I had a similar concept to that one story as well, my idea revolves around the life of a genetically engineered animal hybrid bred as assault infantry, from it's inception through an extensive trial and error program, it's birth, it's military training, psychological conditioning and first years in action attached to a regiment during the Iraq and afghanistan wars in an alternate reality sort of deal. I'd explore the morally dubious nature of it's existence and actions, the consequences of using a predatory instinct as a weapon and of raising a living, thinking creature in a military environment without ever living in a world in which the only difference between family and food is the patch on their shoulders.

>>
>>33309738
No, I'm not making a blatant statement on the whole series, just saying that comparing the series to the books there were some scenes or elements I thought the series did better.

Mostly the whole thing with Clooney having nightmares about Martin. In the series he starts having nightmares after he's stolen part of the tapestry and is generally under stress, leaving it ambiguous if this is supernatural or just his own worries about the siege manifesting through the image he keeps at his side.

In the books he's basically struck dumb with fear just looking at the tapestry in the castle and it's pretty blatant that it's some kind of magical influence, which I thought was a lot less interesting.
>>
>>33301497
There's no such thing as enough dakka, but damn if that don't come close.
>>
>>33309815
While I'd normally grant that you had a point, this is the story where a dude wrote a riddle to his future successor using an anagram of said successor's given name.

There's obviously witchery afoot.

And yet, despite being able to tell Matthias' name generations in advance, Martin was unable to notice that his sword would get pulled off the roof all the fucking time in the intervening years.
>>
>>33310276
Right, I'm just saying that was a change that I personally liked as it left the power a little more ambiguous and subtle, you had to read into it to see any kind of supernatural power.

Whereas the original version of the scene smacked you in the face with it. Also it made Clooney seem downright pathetic having a spaz attack at the sight of a tapestry and having to be gently led away, where in the cartoon he seems like a more canny enemy trying to strike a morale blow than protect himself from a magic tapestry.

Hey, that's pretty cool!

I could totally see that being another branche's wardog armor, maybe air force pararescue or something.

And sorry. Life got busy and my writing spark kinda went out for a while. Hey if you want to keep in contact you can hit me up on Telegram, search for @Wardog.
>>
>>33313321
Glad you like it! I could def see it as a PJ armor, or maybe even CCT? ...man, that'd make a great story hook right there. An Air Force Combat Controller Wardog attached to an Army SF Wardog unit.

If I ever decide to get Telegram I'll definitely hit you up, man. I'd been thinking about writing my own Wardogs sidestory, actually. I think I mentioned it back when the threads were still on /furry/ (RIP).

Dude just get Telegram, it'll take about 5 minutes and I want to keep in touch so I can brainstorm story ideas with you and read whatever you write when it's done.

The Enforcers are a weird entity. They're the police but they operate tanks, jets, and attack helicopters. The whole world of the Swat Kats seems fucked. The government doesn't seem to exist beyond the city level. The city even runs its own space program. The only sign of civilization beyond the city is foreign asian looking cats the mayor is always trying to get to invest in the city.
>>
>>33316229
Well when you have a megacity akin to 1980's anime depictions of Japan that's seemingly autonomous from any national or global society that's constantly threatened by the arcane and supernatural, it kinda makes sense.

And they don't really suck, they're depicted as handling quite a bit of shit on their own in the series. It's just the superbaddies require actual superheroes.
>>
>>33316302
>The only sign of civilization beyond the city is foreign asian looking cats the mayor is always trying to get to invest in the city.
Which they won't because it would all be pissed away into planes, helicopters, and tanks that get wrecked every other week.
>>
>>33316229
I dunno, it looks like they're competent. Yeah, they're lined up in riot-lines a lot, but they hit their shots, jump into melee if it comes to that, and their planes and helicopters are able to follow whatever they're chasing and accurately hit it.

The problem seems to be that their weapons aren't up to the task of actually hurting what they're shooting.
