It's not actually that weird.
During WW I, a Zeppelin tried to bomb a British warship in the North Sea. The ship captain simply watched the Zeppelin's rudder, and when it turned one way, he turned the other. Meanwhile, the ship's crew blazed away at it with pistols and rifles. Something like this would have been pretty impressive to watch.

I just picture some inexperienced pilot accelerating too fast and swinging up into the gas bag, or getting blown up into it by wind, and cutting it with his propeller. Then he can't bail out because the cockpit is covered in deflated rubber.
