It probally won't explode the barrel but it might blow out the case. The length of the throught in a barrel chambered in 556 is twice as long as in 223. So when you put a 556 in a 223 barrel it reaches the threads right out of the brass and causes a higher build up of pressure. You can do what you want, it's not so much unsafe as its just not what it's made for. It may cause malfunctions it may not. But since the ammo costs the same why not just use the ammo it was chambered for?

And no, there is not a single confirmed case of 5.56 causing a catastrophic failure in a gun chambered for .223. Ever.
