overall thoughts on the butterfly knife/balisong, is it effective as a weapon? or nah, just good for tricks people can do with them
It's pointy so I guess you could stab someone with it.

There's also an edge, which is nice for cutting.

should be- should they be legal
The handles are non-grippy what for doing spinny tricks

pretty much the only "good" balisongs are made by benchmade nowadays, and cost a shit ton of dollarydoos for what they are (something like $200 for a BM32).
The BM 32 and 51 make decent edc knives thanks to the pocket clip, but overall - unless you are really into tricks and flipping, the twirly-wirly method of opening gets old after a while, and the "strongest lock" argument is moot when you can carry a fixed blade.
TL:DR version
good balis are expensive, cheap ones are trash. neither are more useful for edc than a regular folder.

benchmade
BRS
microtech
protech
bear and son (some models)
and 500 custom makers
It's some mall ninja shit these days.

>is it effective as a weapon
It's better than nothing, but really the best knife you can have in fight is a fixed blade. Next best thing is a sturdy folder with a long enough blade to reach something vital.

>outlawing knives
are we in the fucking UK?

Lol hey look, OPs buying a flippy autismo.
They're fun as hell to do tricks with but that's all I'd trust it with.
I usually buy them for $15 a pop down at the beach since I keep losing them.

At the end of the day, a knife is a knife.
They are beyond lethal. Is it really better to have than a simple switchblade or flipper though?...not really. Cool tricks though

I don't see the point of balisongs nowadays because most modern folding knives can be flipped open just as fast as balisongs.
Dumb ass hell. Flimsy, easy to cut yourself opening and closing it, makes you look like a fag.
They're fun, and can be as handy as any other similarly sized knife, but they're absolutely not practical for any kind of self defence.
But again, fun.

I mean, anything that goes stabby will be an effective weapon, effective as in it will do bodily harm. But you'd likely get yourself hurt too.
