That's a late production pmk1. You can tell by the lack of filter threads on the right side of the mask and the lack of black paint on the diaphragm and the eyes. Pmk3s are ambidextrous and have the ability to take filters on either side.

The M43/48s for air crew are pretty scary looking. The M17 and PBF are up their with the fuck huge cheeks.

Anything from the World Wars or that were designed for children/infants.

I do however think that the M40 with a PAPR blower system looks pretty cool, if a little bit menacing.

>>33295514
Given what I know about it, which is very little but take this all as intuition.

It's made for people who will not need their peripheral vision during a gas attack, the guys who wore them wouldn't be combat troops, they would likely be gunners or artillery who need a specific eye relief for the optics on their guns and instruments and that by having a mask which didn't allow for great peripheral vision would allow (or at least not interfere greatly) with eye relief.

I suppose it could also be used by marksmen or snipers for that purpose too but that could put the user at risk by only being able to see a very specific area (down scope) and not around him when moving

Many Russian and British Arisakas wound up in the Baltics, where they were used by Finland and Estonia.

It runs the risk of it coming off the rubber, breaking the seal or cracking when carried in the field.

The MSA/MCU ones make up for this by having a tough plexiglass cover peice and a soft flexible inner dome that allows it to bend and prevents stress on the seal.

Here's the deal kiddo:
if actual gas comes out, everyone dies. It is far easier to make new chemical weapons than it is to make and produce new gas masks that are able to resist the agents.
This is assuming inhaled agents only, which is an assumption almost as dumb as your question.
On the subject of masks specifically:
The M40 and the MCU-2/P?
Those were developed in the 80s, issued in the 90s, and replaced in 2009. Given the development cycle, this means they were knowingly obsolete in the early 2000s. The current M50s are also almost certainly obsolete as well, although the chemical agents which defeat them would not be wide spread at this time, although they certainly exist in labs.
All those masks apocalypse preppers own? Useless.

On top of that, for civilian use, you're never going to find unexpired filters unless you're paying top-dollar for them, which you won't because you're buying $60 video gaymes with your allowance money.

Do pic related, don't be a dumbass calladooty mall ninja, and accept that 90% of the things MGS talks about it is fictional/doesn't work.

To be clear, there is a massive difference between an actual gas, and airborne particulate. Take some chemistry courses when you can. Enlightening stuff that more people should know.

Crowd control is the latter, which is why a respirator stops it.

>>33299803
As long as a gas mask makes an airtight seal on your face it isn't obsolete, though obviously the older the gas mask the more likely there will be a leak along with finding filters that will be compatible with it. What you want to actually care about is the filters, as long as you have from-the-factory new filters that are within their expiration date and rated for what you want to be protected from you are more pretty much set.
>>
>>33299928
Obsolete in the sense that the material can be degraded by certain airborne elements, which do already exist and could be weaponized without too much trouble, if they're not already tanked up.
Silicone rubber breaks down in chlorine, butyl rubber breaks down to ammonia, etc.

A shit-hits-the-fan scenario where first-world nations are flinging chemical weapons at one another, as outlined as the hypothetical in >>33299339, is going to result in these agents being released into the air, precisely to break down gas masks.
Hence, when gas comes out, everyone dies. It's not entirely true, because if it's only Sarin a mask will stop it. But the point where a full gas mask does more work for the cost than a respirator is slim to nothing unless a guy lives in the middle east.

Folks buy gas masks because it looks cool, or because they're dumb and don't know about respirators. Information reduces the latter category.

Psychologically speaking, wearing a gas mask unless it is necessary increases your chance of getting killed.
If your face is exposed and you look human there is always that miniscule chance the enemy will take a moment to hesitate, if you luck on a rookie or civie who isn't a hardened killer. A gas mask dehumanizes you and indeed, makes you somewhat more intimidating, making it more likely to initiate the fight (or flight) instinct of an enemy.
>>
>>33305853
It doesn't need to be functional at all, this would just be a costume. I've looked at everything I could think of, though, and haven't been able to find the right visor. I think I may have to build a vacuum forming rig and make it myself, and then spray tint it or something.

They are comfortable but a blister agent bath could damage the silicon rubber face piece. They are easy to work in hence their adoption by the Air Force. They aren't useless against blister agent but masks have to be able to survive multiple exposures, decontamination and reuse in combat so it will be phased out if it isn't already.
>>
>>33298521
>I was told that the main issue is you can't replace them once it's on because they're a pain to get in and out.

True, but in combat you are theoretically supposed to replace the mask during a rest cycle and most troops wouldn't stay in Black long enough to clog both filters anyway. M17 is nice to wear when running or shooting because it doesn't have a canister to bounce and piss you off or break your mask seal when it bumps something. It lasted so long in service because it works. I prefer the "monkey 2" for doing aircraft maintenance or other complex tasks because it's much easier to see out of with spectacle inserts.
>>
>>33300146
>A shit-hits-the-fan scenario where first-world nations are flinging chemical weapons at one another, as outlined as the hypothetical in >>33299339, is going to result in these agents being released into the air, precisely to break down gas masks.

But that won't happen to most countries because gas is a poor weapon IRL and it takes many aircraft sorties or rockets or shells to saturate a target. Halabja took multiple attacks against unprotected targets and still had survivors.

Most likely to ever get a serious smegging is South Korea, and that's not particularly likely.

If you are worried, you need a modern mask and the rest of the ground crew ensemble AKA chem suit. Odds of getting hit with an agent that could break down your mask AND getting hit with ENOUGH of it to break down your mask are likely about that of being killed by a meteorite....
>>
>>33300435
They ARE great for working on planes (I wore them working on F-16s), and the odds of getting drenched with enough blister agent to eat your mask were and remain microscopic.

If you get that close to a bursting chem munition you'd have a soaked GCA and likely be best off shooting yourself.

Cause for mask replacement with superior materials doesn't mean there was some fucking crisis. Get a grip...

Why do you need a filter? Buy any mask with a cartridge filter then don't use the filter. No one else cares. If you have to cosplay with a filter, buy something that takes modern filters.

Gas masks are nice for smoking weed if suitably modified, which has been going on for many decades. Gut the filter, add a bowl, and enjoy.

>It is far easier to make new chemical weapons than it is to make and produce new gas masks that are able to resist the agents.

Off the shelf SCUBA systems negate the problem entirely since it's feeding people their own air supply, giving one out to every civilian first responder would be a hassle but completely possible. Civilians would be able to make do with emergency air supply cans for divers, especially if hooked up to a smoke hood. Such a device would be small enough to carry on a belt or in a purse.

Also, more broadly speaking it is perfectly feasible to seal up the average residential home so it can be safe from an exterior gas attack. Not even the entire house would needed to be sealed, just a single room (like Israel and Switzerland mandate) with detectors in each room/outside.

>On top of that, for civilian use, you're never going to find unexpired filters unless you're paying top-dollar for them,

Which most people will do. Remember the shitstorm after 9/11? Every DIY place in my area was sold out of filters for a year. This was also when large companies started at least entertaining the idea of buying all their employees emergency smoke hoods.

Libertarians sit in the middle, the left are right are NOT the same, their actions and methods of obtaining power are the same though.

The left are largely socially Libertarian, the right are Economically Libertarian, however this is not always the case, but this is the majority of left and right wingers actually communists and Nazis/Fascists are a minority on both sides.

Physical violence is not how you protest, and it is not how you stop protests in the civilized world, he should know better then that, he went out there with the intention of fighting, if you don't want to fight then you don't bring weapons and armor, also he was the aggressor.

My money is on GP7V and I'm biased because I own one. Made a my bloody valentine cosplay in high school. I actually helped run a laser tag arena, so for a week during halloween every few games we'd play a "lights out" match where the black lights were turned off, fog machines on full blast. Packs had flash lights so people could still walk around and see. But this is where it gets fun.

>be an airsofter (again, highschool)
>6'3" at the time
>full set of black BDU's
>black balaclava
>gp7 gas mask
>big black magnum boots
>foam pickaxe that looks real
>convince the boss to pay me for being a "ghost" in the arena
>run the station with another staff member
>every few games I dress up and go into the arena
>2 levels
>two ramps go up to the 2nd level from either end of the arena
>climb up onto the hand railings
>match starts
>people pour in
>group of 4 kids all huddled together start coming up the ramp
>I'm at the top
>group of 3 forces one scared kid to go ahead and check for me
>kid walked under my legs never noticing me
>said it was safe and kept going
>group of kids start walking up the ramp again
>now's the time
>jump down off the rails
>land hard on the wood ramp
>echos through the arena
>kids are 5 feet away
>loudest screams I've ever heard
>they all run away
>climb back into place to scare the next person
>would also wander the arena slowly and would isolate players in corners

Honestly it was the best job I've ever had, it's too bad the place closed down. I gave one poor girl an asthma attack so I had to not climb on stuff anymore and make myself more visible. Pic related, I looked just like this minus the utility belt and the mining helmet.
