the best gun for a cali-fag right now is a 12 gauge or an M14 depending on what you have in terms of cash. Mosins were a good choice when they were 150 bucks 2 years ago but paying 300 for a russian one now is silly. Then again you could always build an AR and say fuck the bolis if you dont plan on taking it to a range and shooting in on land.

My first gun was a k31. They have always cost just above what a mosin costs, but are refined, accurate, and a real joy to shoot. Ammo is an online only purchase, rarely stocked by stores.
But really, what are you looking for? How much money? Rifle? Shotgun? A lever gun might be a good choice in California. They are fun, too.

Can an American tell me why Californians can't just point to the 2nd Amendment?

Doesn't the 14th amendment (from McDonald v. City of Chicago) say that constitutional rights including the 2nd Amendment override state laws, so shouldn't this be settled law already?

Nugget isn't worth it at that price, you could get a new rifle for just a little more.
Hell, you're only about $100-$150 shy of an SKS, which can do basically everything and more but better, with cheaper ammo (7.62x39mm) and better handling.

If you want something for around $300 look for a used Ruger or Savage in .223 or .308
