Which is better? Vets, stolen valor, autists, SEALs, armchair generals, engineers, theorists, etc. all welcome to discuss the state of the art and future uses.

Rifle vs helmet mounted?
Hybrid nv/thermal devices?
Cost considerations?
Weapon-integrated smart targeting?
Future vs history?

Anything goes, but stay on topic.

Instead of saying "which is better", we should ask "In which situation is one better in".

In Iraq, thermals were shitty when the sun was setting or after it set, as thermals would show items such as metal being body temp hot as opposed to our 14D.

However, in sand storms, thermals were better for viewing at larger distances, as the IR in our 14D were blocked out with the dust in the air, hence we couldn't see shit. Situation calls for different pieces of equipment, and unless you have the money to buy both, one should themselves which situation would they use said item the most in.

Both!

How about night time ops?
Were you in a tank?
>>
>>33290040
Buy NODs for nav.

Civvie here, bought 14's and now I hike and bring them everywhere. 200mi+ backpacking and climbing at night, not to mention Coolguy stuff.

If you're asking this question, just buy a set of 14's and if you need duals or thermals down the line, so be it. No Gen1/2 garbage, you can't see shit and need illuminators. Defeats the purpose unless you're hog hunting, but 14's can be had for sub $2k if you watch around.

Really? do you have any experience with them?

>>
>>33289605
I use a yukon night scope on one of my rifles, its pretty decent for what I use it for, but it needs an extra illuminator to see past 100m

Yes, they make your helmet too heavy, and all of the switches and electronics are too fragile.

sooo. it can be improved easily, right?

reptilian
>>
>>33290606

I'm sure, but at the moment its a mediocre combination of two different fragile technologies.
>>
They're both good for different things. The ultimate redpill of image intensification is helmet-mounted gen3 NV monocular over non-dominate eye and thermal sight mounted on weapon, but that's out of most peoples price range.
>>
>>33289605
Both
>>
>>33290119
How long do batteries last? What kind donthey take?
>>
What would it look like if you had one of each for each eye?
>>
What's the cheapest NV scope? I'm going to mount UV lights all around my fence line on motion detectors so the scope itself isn't so important on its own for light amplification. Fucking "racoons"
>>
>>33289605
NODs make me feel like an oper8er, and makes explosions look cool.
So I choose those.

just some info to help people decide.

Thermals will be cheaper and smaller way before NODs will be. So consider that when purchasing either.

What I've seen work well is PVS-14/ANVIS9/PVS-15 on helmet and Thermal scope on the gun.
>>
judging from how far /k/ hass fallen in the past 4-5 months your all to poor to afford the pinnacle of both. with the weaknesses for neither fragility or focusing requirements. save up 40000 and see the night as if it were the light. optics planet offers 1000 off so 48000.

Im glad people are pushing tech but as it stands that shit is way too expensive and not nearly good enough to justify dropping almost 50,000 on. That would be like buying a IBM punchcard computer in the 70s, the tech is going to explode soonish but right now it's way too primitive.

No. Nothing about this statement is correct.

Search lights or perhaps a car headlight? maybe. Turning on during the day? Sure.

No matter how much chucklefuckery is involved you're not going to hurt them with a flashlight.

From my experience, Thermals eat batteries like a single mom eats dick (a lot and fast) while NODs run on the same batteries like that sex toy you bought for your exwife that now sits unused in the bottom drawer.
>>
>>33291053
PVS-14s just take AA batteries. I've never had them run out on me in the field

sometimes it still manages to be dope as fuck. Keep in mind that we're posting on a non-physical forum that allows you to tell somebody thousands of miles away that you fucked his mum. This shit was almost beyond imagination for most people 50 years ago, and yet here we are.

Autogated tubes won't be damaged, just ones that aren't. And really searchlights or car headlights are nothing like sunlight which still doesn't kill tubes immediately.
