I have an opportunity to buy a used Remington 700 BDL in 7mm rem mag. It appears to be made in the 91 or 62. I'm guessing its 91. Guy wants 4 hundo for it. Should I go for it? Is it inherently superior to a new rifle within the same price range?

Also post pics and discuss other bolt guns.

I do like my savages.
>>
>>33287864
WTF? is this a common thing to rechamber them to shot shells?
>>
OP, I doubt that many people on /k/ know anything about bolt actions that aren't milsurp, seeing as how they are perceived as being fudd weapons.
>>
>>33287822
Dont buy anything made by Remington post Freedom Group
>>
>>33287822
The trigger on these older Remington rifles can be easily adjusted if you're not a retard. It's worth buying an older one just for the trigger in my opinion. $400 is probably okay for a bdl. A new bdl would cost a lot more and would probably be shit. 7mm mag is a good hunting cartridge, especially if you're a reloader.
>>
Picked up one of these used recently. I'm a lefty but it was a lot cheaper than going with a new Savage 220 which is what I really want, but shit for a gun that I'm only gonna use two weeks out of the year for killin durr I can live with it. Its ugly as sin tho.
>>
>>33287822
I strongly dislike the Remington 700. I would go for a Winchester Model 70 with controlled round feed any day. Tikka is also really good.
>>
>>33287889
It's an old bolt action 12 gauge, faggot. Probably a Marlin.
>>
>>33287918
For the money would you say its better to go for one of these older BDLs or a newer say Savage 111 or some shit like that?
>>
>>33287933
The older rifles are very good. Controlled round feed is not necessary unless you live in Australia and need to use the rifle upside down.

I got a Rem 700 from '03 in 30-06 and it does everything I want it to. I would definitely recommend, especially if its made before 2010.

400 is a great deal imho.

Excuse potato quality photo.
>>
>>33287935
Are you actually this retarded? The file name says its an M98
>>
>>33287940
I'd buy the BDL. The older guns are genuine wood and steel guns that will last a lifetime and then some. Nothing wrong with a Savage, it just wont be nearly as "polished" as an old production BDL.

Its a Geha Gew. 98 conversion in 12 Gauge. Picked it up yesterday for 200 bucks. They were made after the First world war from old Gew 98s because goymany couldn't have guns no more. Its a pretty cool little gun. Dont know if mines in 2 9/16ths or 2 3/4. Probably only going to shoot Aguila mini's through it anyway. Looks cool next to my 1916 Mauser Brand Mauser. Debating if I want to cut the barrel to 18 1/2, thing only holds 1+1 so it would be kind pointless lol.

Wew, cool
>>
>>33287992
mm I am partial to the wood and steel aesthetics myself.
>>
>>33287974
Apparently so. I just glanced at the photo and assumed it was an old Marlin. Thanks for pointing that out. You're still a faggot though.
>>

Don't know about mausers but ishapore rebuilt some SMLE in 410 for prison guards

Fun fucking guns, so glad I got one when I did. Really wish they kept it as a magazine gun but its still a really fun gun
>>
>>33288008
Make sure it has a good bore, isn't rusty and the stock isn't dinged up. Not much else to go wrong with them. Easy to work on, lots of aftermarket and will always hold value.
>>
>>33288062
Realistically assuming bore is good and everything is in acceptable condition/minor sign of use. Should I even try to jew this dude down? 400 seems reasonable, almost too reasonable based on prices I'm seeing on GB.
>>
>>33287838

like your taste in rifles - love the wood stocks
>>
>>33288103
It's a good deal. I scored one a few months ago for $350. Fucked around with it at the range a bit then sold it for $550. It was a good gun and probably the third 700 I've owned. I just have too many other rifles. If you don't like it for whatever reason, you can always sell it. The only drawback I can see is ammo cost. 7mm mag is probably pretty spendy these days.
>>
>>33288191
Yeah thats the thing. Its a lefty model. Which is great BC I'm a lefty and the used market for us is pretty slim. Hell the new market is slim. So yeah, I think I'll sit on it for a bit. Plus 7mm Rem Mag is def overkill as I am east coast. Glad to know its a good deal tho.

Any CZ rimfire shooters in here? I'd love to get one of these and they look wonderful, do they have anything going for them besides better fit and finish? I know accuracy is pretty good but is it significantly better than comparably priced options out there?
>>
>>33288421
I have the 455 "trainer." Very nice rifle. You can buy a real wood and steel CZ for significantly less than other brands and quality is the same or better in most cases. The only gripe I have is that mine came with a plastic magazine. Metal mags are available aftermarket, but in my opinion, the rifle should come with one.

Beginner with an interest in bolt guns here.

If I value:

*Versatility
*Reliability/Durability
*Safety
*Availability/cost of ammo outside of just the internet
*Comfortable to shoot
*Mechanical accuracy
*Aesthetics

in roughly that order of importance, what are some good choices in gun/caliber to get for a first bolt gun? Also, is there any point in buying new? The secondary market seems to be a far better deal $ for $.

>Also, is there any point in buying new? The secondary market seems to be a far better deal $ for $.
you buy new if your local used market sucks. being able to physically handle a gun is important.
heres what you do use ammobot to figure out what caliber you can actually afford. then hit up a bunch of gunshops and look at their used racks.

Keeping MilSurp out of the equation, an older Rem-700 or a Browning A-Bolt would be pretty good for you. Get it in .308 Winchester/7.62x51 NATO, .30-1906 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, or 7mm Remington Magnum. All are super common and most are panic buy proof. However if you want to include MilSurp, M1903s, M1917s, Spanish FR-8s, Indian Ishapore 2A1s and Mosins would be your best bet
>>
>>33288733
Have there been QC problems with the newer 700s? I know that Remington as a whole has gone down the toilet since becoming one of the heads of Cerberus. Is the aforementioned takeover the cutoff date for when Remington 700s ceased to be good, or was it before that?

Also, how are Winchester Model 70s? I know that the pre-64 ones are good and that the ones immediately after 64 are terrible. Are any of the later production examples decent?
>>
>>33288805
>>33288805
The newer Model 70s are made by FN or some shit, I hear they are actual decent. As far as Remington 700s go its just precautionary to buy pre-freedom group.
>>
>>33287919
I've used one on durr for years because of stupid rifle zone laws. Purely anecdotal experience with hornady sst has been a completely predictable kill with a double lung shot, the deer runs 60 to 100m leaving a scant blood trail until it reaches the site of its death where it does its best to imitate a 80s slasher film. If I had a better trigger or if I used it in warmer weather I would be confident with 200m shots.
>>
7mm Mag is about the only cartridge that I hate shooting and heard the same from other hunters.

I would pass, especially if it's a LH model.
