The German military is not as capable as it could be being that Germany is the largest economy in Europe. It has what many would describe as the third most powerful European military, behind France and Britain.

Germany has always been a land power and as such has always focused on its ground forces as opposed to its Navy, thus the German Navy is nothing to write home about.

The Air Force is decent compared to most other European powers, consisting of mainly support aircraft, fighters, and strike fighters, most of which are 4-4.5 gen. The Germans also posses and decently sized and fairly advanced helicopter fleet that is meant to maneuver with ground forces in the event of a war in eastern Europe. Never the less the German Air force is still at its core a compliment to, and not a replacement for, the United States.

Finally the Army, Germany's favored branch, currently and historically. Despite a large population the German Army is only able to produce a measly 60,000 standing troops, this is due largely to budget cuts under Ms. Merkel and the German populations general aversion to military things. Despite this short coming the Germans do boast a strong and formidable army particularly when working within the parameters of NATO which it was (as stated previously) designed to support.

As I see it the German military suffers from two primary issues. The first is that it constantly falls on its support role and deep seeded pacifism to justify spending cuts which have decreased the strength of the military significantly in the past ten years during this long peace in Eurasia. This in turn leads to the second problem, from what I've heard the German military has some serious morale issues, many Germans perceive the military to be a necessary evil and as such open displays of military patriotism are something that makes them uncomfortable even in an era when the German government wants "normalize" Germany's self-image. This plays havoc with morale.

I did an individual augmentation deployment from Japan to Afghanistan. Got put in ISAF. One time I went out the wire to carry the radio and batteries for a fire control soldier from 82nd. We were tagging along with a German Army platoon.

single story house. 6 durkas with AKs taking pot shots at us from over 300m. Germans all take cover. Then their platoon leader has us call in 155mm from our FOB to level the house. Germans had 40mm grenade launchers and MG3s. so they could have laid down serious fire to advance to the house and then clear it.

Current german army enlisted here. As was said before, politics are the main reason everything is as fucked as it is right now. In the opinion of this landser the biggest problem are the actual people joining up. Most of the new recruits we get are terribly unfit and barely motivated. The tendency to exxagerate or make up injuries/illnesses to get paid sick leave or skip field Training is pretty high, especially since its become pretty hard to kick people out or reprimand them for something like this. The reason for that are the personnel shortages. So they kinda just let everyone in and carry many useless assholes around that are sick 90% of the time anyway. Training standard is pretty good at least in my outfit but well see how long that lasts.

Another problem is equipment especially helicioters and transport planes. Most of them are pretty old and tend to require insane amounts of maintenance which often leads to jumps being cancelled. Not that there are that many that still jump since they downsized the staff at the airborne Training school dramatically so naturally less people go through jump school.
Morale is pretty low to since theres a widespread feeling the defence minister cares more about getting traps and gays into the army and kindergartens in barracks than more pressing stuff.
