Hey /k/ my dad is looking for a home defense rifle. He lives in the middle of no where in New Hampshire. He is concerned about all the lib riots and shit. He wants a rifle that works both alright at close-ish range (in case the dudes get near the house)but also at pretty solid medium range. He doesn't want to spend much over 1000 dollars. I personally know jack all about civilian manufacturers or civilian gun laws, so any help would be appreciated.

are we talking SHTF defending the 40 acre homestead shooting bandits across a field, or home defense within the rule of law?
because good luck explaining to a jury why you shot that trespasser from 200 yards away, even if he was armed
In either case, I would just have him buy an AR or AK to suit his preference. If the 1000 needs to buy ammo and accessories too, then definitely an AR.

Get something in .308 would be my recommendation. I've got a mini-30, the gun wasn't too expensive and it shoots 7.62x39 so ammo is dirt cheap even the higher end loads.

How come noone posted this yet? Sure, it holds only 10 rds, but if innacloserange you run out, you have integral bayonet. Also, into his budget, this is gonna fit twice.

OP here, Thanks guys, as for why he is concerned, I have no idea, he lives in the fucking trees. For range he kept saying like stand off distance. And just the gun is the 1000, ammo and what not he will spend more on.
