Posted this last thread regarding the M72 RPK I was going to buy in the next week or 2 for 900 bucks.
What drum mags do you guys recommend? Rear loading or top loading?
Any idea on optics mounts/packages?
Are 7.62x39 bakelites worth it? How about plums? Pmags? I used to own an SAR 1 so I know the steel mags are gtg.

Impulse Maadi buyer from last thread. I cleaned the gun up and everything looks as solid as I'd expect, at least for $400. There's a bit of rust in some places, namely on the underside of the selector, but nothing life threatening. All the major parts and and then some match - bolt, carrier, dust cover, and even the mainspring are matched to the trunnion serial.

The only critical issue remains the loose sight leaf - not only is it laterally canted right, it's loose enough that I can see the leaf moving when I rack the gun or pull the trigger. Any suggestions for a fix?

Also, if anyone can point me to a Maadi production variants page so I know what to swap the stock and grip to to help make it more period accurate, let me know. I know I'll have to deban it later but small things first.
>>
>>33267148
It's a hackjob, regular AK-74 FSB with the top cut off, and what looks like an HK sight welded to the gas block. Plus a bunch of other weird shit. Honestly doesn't look bad but a far cry from a type 81.

It's an OK gun that has skyrocketed in price due to limited numbers following an import ban decades ago.
If you're a collector and you want to add this to your collection, go for it. If you want a shooter, take that money and buy three WASR's instead.

If my '83 build would just get finished already, then I could be satisfied on AKs and focus on getting my Glock and Scorpion projects squared away like I intended to do this year.

Pretty much just do pic related until it fits, no rocket science at all. Just try to mimic the angle on a 30rd mag. One mag is almost done, one is unmodified in the picture.
545 is a little more complex, you need to grind a tad lower in the center directly in front of the bullets vs the outsides. You'll see where when you try to insert it and see where the bullet guide is pushing and blocking it from locking in.
>>33268921
The vz58 is the only one that was cut from a 30rd mag, the rest are factory 10's. 30rd mags aren't important pieces of history or something.

Review: PSAK-47 GB2
Cost: $99 + $399 + $30 Shipping + FFL Fee
Pros: Cheap, seems to shoot pretty reliable after fixing issues
Cons: You will need to fix some issues, fit and finish isn't great, no chrome lined barrel, dust cover doesn't have that convenient release button on the side.
Full Review:
Decided to pick one up due to 7.62x39 not being that accurate anyways, primarily as a fighting rifle within 100 yds. Assembly was more than an AR but not like actually building an AK since the trunnion, barrel, and receiver came assembled. I had to file a couple mm into the notch for the lower handguard and shave off maybe a mm of the lower handguard to get the lever to lock in place during assembly, was worried I might have damaged the barrel but it works fine. Everything else went together really easily. Came with tons of grease.
On the first range trip, sights were way off, and had trouble feeding after maybe 20 rounds. I think the slant brake the rifle comes with pushes the bullet down and to the right. Had to adjust the front sight all the way down and almost all the way right and it was still hitting low at 25 when I was aiming right under the bullseye with the leaf sights. I believe getting a new brake should help.
In between the first and second range trip (just now) I looked where the bolt carrier was scratching up the receiver and filed the finish off, also saw large, rough chunks of metal missing from the hammer so I filed that quite a bit to make it smooth.
Went back to the range today and fired 80 rounds with no failures whatsoever, including rapid fire and slow fire. Rifle gets hot fast, some of the lube/plastic was burning during rapid fire. Had a great range day, was able to keep all my rounds on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper at 50 yds using leaf sights. Trigger felt meh ever filing, better than before however.
Recommended Upgrades:
AKT Trigger: $45-70 depending on model
RS Regulate: $185
OR UltiMak: $90
Red Dot: $50-700
>>
>>33274358
Forgot to add, I highly recommend a better muzzle brake that doesn't throw your aim way off.
Muzzle brake: $50
I'll personally probably go with the Bushnell TR-25 red dot and the UltiMak rail because I like the larger field of view and faster target acquisition and this is meant to be a cheap reliable gun, not some pimped out AK.
>>
>>33274358
Or you could just buy a good AK
>>
>>33274400
I might in 5.45, but for 7.62 not being that accurate and all, I'm more just looking for reliability. It's about comparable to a WASR for a little cheaper.
>>
>>33274428
>I might in 5.45, but for 7.62 not being that accurate and all

Just because 5.45 has a flatter trajectory does not mean 7.62 is inaccurate

7.62 is king out to 300 yards

I'm not 100% sure, but I've seen some AK videos where they push a button on the side instead of the rear to take off the dust cover. Maybe it's some proprietary thing. I'm new to AK's too so I could be 100% wrong.

At least some Serbian AKs have them

>>33274781
They are kind of stupid tbqh the only real use for them is locking the spring forward before reinstalling the dust cover them pressing the button to lock it in place

Or you could just not have girl hands

My understanding is that it's an extra measure to keep the top cover from flying off while launching rifle grenades.

The only mention I could find of a 'C' stamp on a mag is in an akfiles thread where someone asks where his could be from, and another user says he's pretty sure it's Romanian.
Best I could do.

Thank you, I wasn't able to find anything when I looked earlier. The guy said the ones I bought were Romanian and this was the only one without the obvious Romanian markings.
>>
>>33274934
An article I found was talking about how the romanian factories used different stampings over the years before settling on the O, so lack of an O doesn't mean it's not Romanian.
Here's where I read that part.

>>
>>33274837
its a romanian or hungarian

romanians have '0' stamp but could look like a 'C'. Hungs have 'C2' stamps

>comparable to a WASR for cheaper
I'm sorry, but my WASR came with sights already dialed in and didn't require me filing anything to make shit fit

any nothing is cast or milled from billet, everything is forged
and the barrel is chrome lined (although PSA's nitriding is decent enough)
>>
>tfw I might finally sell my C39V2 to a friend of a guy from church
A long series of mistakes will finally come to an end when I can get a WASR and be done with it.
