The U.S military ALMOST adopted the G3.
Do you think it would have been better than the M4 and M16 variants why or why not?
>>33266216
The G3 would have been a lot better than the M14 but that's not saying very much.
>>33266216
What.
The G3 wasn't even in those trials, was it?
I thought it came down to the T44 and whatever the FAL variant was.

Denmark went m60
>>33266458
Thank you.
>>33266437
Ours was a medium/heavy that got a stock and normal trigger slapped on it, and then an FG-42 with a belt feed mechanism.
Yeah they sucked but the second one was only "ours" in a that we pressed it into a role it really shouldn't have been in in.
Thinking on it, have we ever made a belt fed LMG ourselves, or are all of our designs jerry rigged and borrowed?
>>33266451
Sand cuts bro.
It's an inch pattern, so it's an L1 A1 variant.
Battle rifles became obsolete in WWII.
>>33266437
>no Mg3 to shoot hadjis with. Have to carry that overweight Belgian shit.
>>33266538
You mean the 70s, Battle Rifles werent around until after WW2
>>33266216
I think that on today's battlefield the intermediate cartridge is king. Probably would have replaced the G3 with a chopped down version in a smaller cartridge for the same reasons the military likes the M4.
>easy for vehicle operations
>smaller cartridge for handling, recoil, ect
>smaller rifle for CQB
All the shit they talk about modern day asymmetric warfare stuff. Yeah it would have been cool through the 90's but if events played out the same globally I doubt we'd see mass use G3's in 7.62. You might still see them in some designated marksman role like the M14.
I don't like it but I feel that the battle rifle went out the window as a general infantry weapon when the Warsaw Pact became a thing of the past.
>>33266616
A lot of thing went out the window with the Warsaw Pact anon.
There actually being a damn near cut and dried "is and them" without people calling you a phobe of any kind.
Asymmetrical warfare (pretty much)
Anything to do with being a spy if you're not of middle eastern descent.
High thigh bikinis...those I miss. A whole fucking lot.
>>33266552
I think he's talking about stg-44.

i hate to be that guy but L1A1

You aren't though.
>>33266496 already got it.

"almost adopted" is the loser's way of saying "rejected"
>>33266437
Daily reminder we were paying Germany for the right to using a rifle designed by Germans while shooting Germans with their rifle design in ww1.
>>33268432
germans know how to make a buck off dead germans.
>M14, BM59, FN FAL, AR10, and StG57 all lost to G3A2 in Norwegian trials
>>33268432
We'd already paid off all of the initial royalties by the time the war started in Europe. We weren't paying anything during.
>>33266216
Better than m14.
Worse than M16.
>>33266437
To be fair the m60 is a great gun now. Sure it took 50 years or so but hey
I love me some ARs but I also wouldn't complain if the US had gone G3 instead of M14, then shifted to the HK33 for its intermediate cartridge rifle.
>>33266657
high thighs came back. Portland hipsterfag here, its coming back in style for the hipsters so no worries.
>>33266216
In some ways better, but hard to deny the modularity of the AR platform. It became the f150 of guns. Not best, not worst, not cheapest, not most expensive, goldilocks rifle in many ways. I highly doubt the US picking up FALs or G3s or even sticking with m14s longer would have changed that.
>>33270506
Operator error aside it was pretty decent at the time too. The mil just has a way of running shit till the doors fall off then duct taping the doors back on
>>33266496
I think the stoner 62 and 63 may have been mostly us designed
>>33266552
Our memes slipping into reality isnt that shocking
>>33266216
My grandpa had to qualify with both the G3 and the M16 when he was stationed in Germany during the cold war. He said he liked the G3 but would rather keep his M16. The only gun he really spoke highly of from his 3 tours in Vietnam and the 30 subsequent years working for the military was the M1903 Springfield, not that everything else sucked but that he they didnt interest him much.
The AR-10 was better, god damn that burst barrel tacked on by whatever hack fuck thought it was a good idea.
>>33268317
>L1a1
Which is a variant of the FAL...which was originally made by FN...made under license from Boys From Belgium...referred to as "Commonwealth FAL" or "Inch Pattern FAL"
>>33266216
Much better. You literally can't make it not feed.
